same here

My Genius Bar appointment resulted in what I am simply tired of hearing from Apple Store employees:

"It's within spec."

When did I agree with their specification of crappiness?

I got the same from the genuis bar: it's within spec. I left feeling underwhelmed. I did the software restore via itunes and it doesn't appear to have helped at all. I hope this is addressed soon.

side note: transfer any pics you've taken with the phone or notes as these are wiped out.

The sound quality is very good, and people can here me fine. However, the volume is probably the lowest I have ever had on a phone. It's not hindering me from using the phone in any way, but it needs to be bumped up a few notches.

Glad 2 see this issue being raised. Mine is LOW!!!.. even on speaker, the only solution i have now is too use the ear piece...

it is one thing to say within spec for dead pixels because you can actually prove that. However without a decibel reader, you simply cannot prove that your volume is within spec. Go back and ask him to prove that it is within spec.

Quite obviously, there is a variation in the quality of hearing between individuals but there does seem to be such variance in the reports posted here about call, speaker, and ring volume that it suggests a difference between iPhones themselves.

Perhaps I'm wrong and it is just human perception and quality of hearing in the individual?

ok well, me and my all my co-workers feel the sound sucks. (I am the only one with an iPhone).

make sure you take all of the plastic off! my friend was having this problem and a few hours later realized they had not fully removed the plastic!

Well I did the restore today and the volume has drastically improved.
It also seemed to help with the safari and iPod crashing as it has not done it again since than.

God I love this phone :D

Please people, stop posting this. It's been suggested like six times in this thread already. Same goes for the whole restore procedure. Some of us have tried it and got nothing, others apparently did get some better volume. Either way, the solution has already been proposed and determined not to be a solution for everyone.

Volume really stinks!

My MAJOR disappointment with my phone (other than the SLOW Edge network) is the ring volume and speaker phone volume. I can probably live without the speaker phone, but I'm missing most of my calls cuz I can't hear the phone ring when it's in my pocket. I never thought Apple could be worse than my Razr, but this volume really is.

I took it in to the store and was told it was within spec. I hope they fix this really soon cuz it's one of the reasons I'm telling my friends to wait before getting one.

i also had really low volume, went to the store to have a genius look at it, didnt know about the "remove the plastic from the screen" part, volume is amazingly great ever since....

It's amazing how many people are actually admitting to being dumb enough to go to the Genius Bar before looking at where the sound is coming from and realizing they left plastic over it.

I have zero problem with the call volume. Sounds just fine to me. My only complaint is that I can't use my Shure headphones with the headphone jack. Now I'm going to have to buy a clunky adapter.

I'm perfectly happy with the call volume whether I'm on speaker or not. I bet the problems some people are having will be fixed by a firmware update.

Did the restore as well and it didn't help. I can hardly hear anyone and I miss all but 5% of my incoming text messages. As much as i love this phone, this is kind of a big deal if you can't even use it as a phone. I think I'll be going to the Apple store and comparing mine with other phones tomorrow. Although it sounds like this is a pretty common problem.

Volume is way too quiet.

Sound quality is excellent though. Nice, round sound.

Apple needs to kick up the max volume by 3 notches...just give us the option.

No problems here

I've called using the Speakerphone, iPhone, and BT headset.

In every case, the volume on my end was just fine, with the volume set in the middle setting.

The people I called all told me I sounded just fine.

It could be a matter of variations between different lots of phones.

this thread is null for me. i'm not having these huge problems... maybe you guys just have bad units.
