Are you hoping the new MBP keeps the Touch Bar?

I really hope it does, but I highly doubt it.

I returned my M1 MBP for refund, due to several issues. But I really grew to like the Touch Bar.

How about you? Are you hoping the new MBP keeps the Touch Bar?

If so, what did you most like about it? For me, it was text prediction. It was really fluid for my workflow.

I personally don't care too much either way. I have some minor uses for the touch bar and I almost never use function keys. I like adjusting volume and video scrubbing with it. That's about it.

I'm on the fence, but when forced off the fence, I lean to "yes" because I do still believe it has potential.

On the other hand it's had plenty of time to live up to that potential and it looks kinda silly when applications don't do anything with it and we're left with a row of virtual function keys.

Whatever its fate, I like that it existed. Taking chances is how you get innovation even if those chances fall flat.

Really? I don't really quite understand that. You're writing something, and instead of just continuing to write, you remove your eyes from the display, crane your neck down to look at the Touch Bar, move your hand/fingers up from the keys you're typing with to pick a text prediction? Feels like that'd be significantly slower, more cumbersome and not very ergonomic, honestly. But ey, if it works for you, happy for you :)

I would honestly be incredibly sad if the next model has an obligatory Touch Bar though. I really want the next 16" but I really do not want a Touch Bar. I use function keys quite a bit and I do not like looking away from the display. Having to actually look down to change volume or brightness would also really irritate me. Can't just quickly do it with the click of a tactile button.
My preferred solution is an optional BTO Touch Bar so you and I can both get what we want :p - Hell even a BTO function key model would be fine, even if it costs extra, though it'd likely be the Touch Bar that would add to the cost, not the function keys.

Dont get a hope for that. A leaked schematic already shows that there is no Touch Bar.

Now that there is a physical escape key, I don't hate it. Still, I find it's usefulness limited. I can touch type at a decent pace, so I don't really use the predictive text. I'm also old school and have become accustomed to using keyboard shortcuts.

I'd say the biggest hurdle is that it isn't always present. I often use my MBP docked and with an external keyboard, which doesn't have the touch bar. Keyboard shortcuts work no matter which keyboard I'm using.

As long as they add back in real function keys, I couldn’t care less whether there’s a touchbar. But the touchbar in place of function keys is excruciating for those of us who are keyboard-driven.
That's an excellent point. The touch bar would be good as long as the function keys were real. (I really do need the function keys.)

Both my 2016 and 2019 MBP's have the touch bar. I don't really have a like or dislike for it.

I’m assuming from all available evidence that the Touch Bar is dead, so this probably is a moot discussion. The main evidence for that in my view is the fact that we never saw the TB on Apple’s subsequently-released keyboards. It makes no sense to develop muscle memory for the TB when using the laptop and then abandoning that whenever the laptop is attached to something (or when we are using another Mac), so it’s pretty obvious that Apple lost its enthusiasm for the TB some time ago.

In this as in most posts regarding the TB, it strikes me how far it is from reaching its potential with most people. I’m using the Golden Chaos modifications, and it’s *really* nice. Just getting to press one button and see my Dock in the TB has freed up a fair amount of screen space, and that’s the tip of the iceberg as to what this modification allows. I suspect the TB would be even better if Apple had moved quickly to provide for this sort of thing and robust customization. Finally, many people never realized that you could do things like adjusting the volume merely by holding your finger down and sliding — you didn’t need multiple clicks to do that (contrary to what was first reported by some outlets). That’s on Apple, too, since they didn’t make the effort to teach users how to use the thing.

In short, and irrespective of whether the TB might have been popular under different circumstances, it at this point amounts to a wasted opportunity by Apple.

Touchbar looks great but it didn't make the device easier/better to use for the majority. Interesting idea, failed application - time to let it go.
Lenovo tried it several years ago and quickly ditched it for similar reasons... Apple improved on Lenovos idea but in the end it was still pretty much useless... I am glad to see it gone and hope it never comes back! :p

I want an interface I don’t have to look at (muscle memory). Bring back buttons. Make them mini display buttons like Razer attempted with their SwitchBlade UI if you need them to be dynamic, but buttons nonetheless.

I hope it doesn't come back. It seems a lot of the design features from the 2016+ MBP have ended up being duds like the butterfly keyboards, lack of ports, killing off magsafe, etc...

If the rumors and leaks are true, the next version should be bringing some of that stuff back, and the junk keyboard is already replaced.

There's a rumor of a new device with a screen. If it's not the new HomePod, then it's probably the successor to the Touch Bar. I like the Touch Bar but I hardly use :/. so if it goes away, I won't be sad, but I do like the idea of an interface that changes based on the application.

The rumours says it disappearing. I have used the 2018 15" MBP since launch and usually forget I have it. Did you find any good use for it? Specific application that had a well implemented feature?

Totally agree! I always have to look down at it to change volume and screen brightness. I was never unsure on earlier MBPs or MBs, tactile buttons gives better room for muscle memory.

And are anyone else experiencing that the Touch Bar is unpleasantly hot when the machine is under load?

I do use the Touch Bar.. especially to skip all the annoying YouTube commercials.
👆 that's a pretty neat feature, one of the few good ones the Touch Bar gave us.
