It's been verified the RAM is not user upgradable with the iMac Pro.
Hmm but it sure looks like there are still regular RAM slots from this picture. (4x32GB?)
I'm sure people will find a way.

It looks like there are standard ECC RAM slots... but no access door.

If this is like previous iMacs... the only access will be through the front of the screen.

And that means prying apart the screen, ripping off glue, being careful not to unplug any internal wires, etc.

Get your heatguns ready! :D

32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and the optional numeric keyboard
Man, that would have cost me over 4500 in euro here..

I'm pricing one out too, just for grins. Leaving the ram at 8GB since you can throw in 2x16GB later for a couple hundred, leaving you with 40 GB after installation. Upgrade to another 2x16GB later if needed and resell the 2x4GB for a bit on eBay.

I only priced out the 1TB SSD. I'm glad to hear that these are much faster in the latest models. At what point do I just bit the bullet and buy a more expensive iMac because I like working on the Mac better? Ugh. I hate myself and I hate this price:

It's so weird to me that consumer pricing is listed without VAT.
In the NL when you're consumer buying it's tax included, and business is excl tax in listings.

so when the page says $3500 for me, it's $3500 all in..

Wouldn't it be cool if we could just magnet unclip the whole backpanel to get access to it, like.. what everybody always tells me when they dont know computers and ask me how to upgrade it? 'can't you just unclip the back and replace the ssd, ram, etc'

Most Macs don't come with upgradeable RAM anymore. If you think you'll want more, just upgrade it at purchase.

So what happens if you have a RAM failure? A 'Pro' who pushes their machine hard may encounter this situation more often that the home user.

IMO the iMac Pro is targeted toward the freelance creative or small shop owner/operator who relies on it as the workhorse of their business. Instead of replacing a RAM module, or SSD etc, the entire machine is down for an unknown period of time while the machine is sent out for repair, which in itself consumes a fair amount of time.

Hence, my gripe with locked down hardware. If the iMac Pro had user serviceable/upgradeable GPU, RAM and SSD I say this is a Mac Pro killer. But it's not.

Interesting that you have companies like HP, Dell and Lenovo all entering the AIO Workstation market and all with configurations well below what the iMac Pro will offer. So I think the blanket claims that "pros don't want AIOs" is an incorrect one and I think the iMac Pro is going to be the machine setting the performance benchmark, not the PC OEMs.

I know of the HP Z1 G3 all-in-one workstation. What AIO workstations do Dell and Lenovo offer with Xeon processors?

People who want a black iMac, less money in their wallet, and don't mind being disappointed when they discover it's actually a darker grey iMac and not even as dark as on Apple's webpage.

I am still on the fence in regards buying a machine like this, which is completely locked down, but a the same time it is near perfect for my needs and what I have waited for. Hopefully Apple do have the cooling sorted out and the RAM is not extortionate in cost, given it is unaccessible.

It will be interesting to see how the first reviews go, and I certainly won't be an early adopter on the iMac pro [I normally am], but overall looks like a game changer in terms of desktops. I wonder what Microsoft are thinking?

Its the same as the Mac Pro looking satin black until you see it in real life.
Space grey can look nice and black in a dark room ;)

I wasn't, but I am now. Was going to wait for the Mac pro, but given the unexpected release of this I'll likely take the plunge. I need a new business machine so will fit the bill.

Hopefully Apple doesn't convert $5,000 to £5,000

There's $50 between the iMac 5K 27" top spec without modification and the same machine - it's going to be £4,900 or thereabouts - if not, £4995 - no reason to suggest otherwise.

Skipping out on mmp?

I understand the iMac Pro is a professional machine but isn't the 5k iMac (especially the late 2014 version for $2500) considered a professional machine as well? It was made for with the mind of video editors and photo editors if I remember correctly.

so, how upgradable will this be?
how much will Apple charge to solder in 128 GB of RAM?

Thanks. I was trying to find it on the Dell Canada site, I found it now.

I did a Live Chat with a rep and he told me the 5720 was user upgradable for RAM, which is good news. On the other hand, it uses AMD GPUs, but that's not a deal breaker. Still kind of pricey though.

I realize All-In-Ones are sexy and sleek.

But if you're considering a Windows workstation... you get waaay more value with a tower and a monitor.

I know, I know... it's a separate big box that you have to put somewhere. But it can be on the floor under your desk... or turned sideways behind the monitor.

The point is... it's a traditional tower that will allow you to put anything you want inside. Extra 3.5" drives... your choice of video cards... whatever.

These are supposed to be workstations... not art... :D

If you're considering a Xeon-powered workstation... how it looks shouldn't be at the top of the list.

Apple needs to prove they can make this thing run without it sounding like a hornet's nest taking off.
Love the idea and hope it really works, but a bulkier industrial design with lots of upgrade space would have been much more enticing to any "Creative Type or Pro if you must" - So Far, it's a consumer looking skinny case. Making it Black and Playing Rock music doesn't get it past 1st base. They did that with the Trashcan. Hmmm? An old friend had a saying I loved ... "All Tell And No Show"

Fashion and a butt kicking computer don't mix if you're being honest. In fact, the "i" and Pro don't mix either. What are they thinking? You won't sell a huge amount of these and profit like an iPhone. So why bother with nitpicking profit with the ram, SSDs, etc etc. Show us a product that gleans power and that "innovate" Schiller was so proud to claim not long ago. Prove it and stop nitpicking on bits of tiny profit like a weenie set of Lawyers in a room. Give us a reason to believe Apple has the stones to "Innovate" a flagship to give cred to it's big profit iPhone.

Agreed. I figure I can build a PC tower with similar specs to the Dell Precision 5720 AIO, plus get two 24" (regular) monitors, all for about $900. less.

Just need a Xeon CPU, with ECC RAM, and a good medium range GPU, but don't really need 8 cores. So, I'm kind of somewhere in between a full on workstation, and a regular desktop. It's probably best for me to configure my own components.

Yes - frankly, I am extremely satisfied by what I have seen thus far, and am very happy to see how responsive Apple has been to concerns regarding their dedication to power Users.

I was going to buy a Windows workstation, but the announcement of the iMac Pro has led me to not go this route. I want to know more about it, but the bottom line is that it is a machine based on Apple's trend of quality, with a crap ton of power, for a reasonable price considering what it will come with (the workstation I was considering wasn't that far off in terms of price if I added in a 5k display.)

What I am very interested in is, 1) upgradability, 2) if Apple may offer a protection plan that goes beyond the 3 years for those buying the iMac Pro and Mac Pro (considering the intended service lives of these systems are often quite long), and 3) noise.

Additionally, Apple has confirmed to us that the RAM in the iMac Pro will not be user-replaceable. This shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise given Apple’s other recent products, but nevertheless it means users are stuck with however much RAM they purchase from Apple. Currently, the 27-inch iMac features user-upgradeable RAM, while the 21.5-inch model does not.
