I'm fine with all these color options, really. Whatever floats anyones boat..
But dear lord, just offer a grey/black version with black bezels for the average Joe.

"Oh, but you probably will get your space grey version with black bezels because they most certainly make a "Pro" model"

No, screw that. Why would you have to pay premium price for something that is considered standard?
I bet percentage wise, 80% of the people would still want a silver/grey or black version instead of these fancy colours, 95% would chose black bezels.. You know, these things aren't usually so colourful for a reason, it distracts from the actual content....

Putting that aside, why put that standard color option behind a pay wall? I consider it an ugly move.

The problem Apple has right now is that they essentially have no high end option. By that I mean, you probably don't want anything Intel since the platform is going down the obsolete drain as we speak. You probably don't want a M1 if you have high end graphics or memory needs. So really there is nothing high end. During this year we will get something, but we are in an awkward moment.

Personally I just wanted an option for a little better processor. I keep my iMacs for 7 to 10 years and I am not sure M1 will be good enough. On my current 2010 21.5 I upgraded to the best processor and I have been very happy.

It just doesn't make sense for me to spend the money on M1 iMac when I can just get a Mini if I want.
maybe, you can always downgrade the monitor. I'm curious how much a miniLED non Apple monitor with comparable specs cost. Personally, the M1 with a 7700 geek bench 5 score is pretty awesome. sure you could wait, and if you don't need one, you should, technology always improves and prices seem to decline

That doesn't make sense to me. Just because Apple is shifting away from Intel doesn't mean the products are obsolete in any fashion, they will be supported for years and even if they eventually no longer get updates they might be locked into MACOS Alcatraz or something, but it will still run and still be great. The fact that Xcode makes development on multi-platforms so easy basically says that there will still be products and updates to products for years to come.

we are not mad, just disappointed that  is getting away with producing such limited products.

and making products for the certain masses instead of their loyal customers.

There are nice, smart kind folks who post frequently here who deserve a 1TG 16GBram iMac with the M1 chip to compliment their MI MacBook pro or air instead of lame fake bust business owners who cares about colors than performance, these pastel iMac should have been released later this year.

I too am a bit disappointed there isn't more differentiation in M1 processors. Putting the exact same processor into a variety of devices seems, well, lazy. As of yesterday, we now have:

iPad (Pro)
iPad without a screen (Mac Mini)
iPad with attached keyboard (MacBook Air)
iPad with attached keyboard and nicer display (MacBook Pro)
iPad with big screen (iMac 24")

Kind of like a car manufacturer plopping the same engine into a compact, sedan, crossover, pickup, etc.
The smaller vehicles will feel powerful, the larger ones, not so much.

you expect a car manufacturer to have a new engine for every car?

These are entry macs. Let apple's plan unfold a bit further, they have not yet addressed pro or prosumer-level macs.

not much sense in this comment to me. A Mac runs MacOS, and iPad runs iPadOS. It would be more appropriate to say the iPad were a portable Mac than to say a Mac is an iPad. also, last I checked intel processors get put in lots of different computers (lazy!). I'd say it is more like, you have a super tablet that no one else can even dream about, an iPad Air that is phenomenal and more like a low-end MacBook Pro (which happens to be way faster than most intel laptops), and an iMac with one of the best screens in the biz.

So you would buy a PS5 if Sony announced they will no longer be supporting it as of some undetermined date in a few years? Or would you buy an XBox? I guess someone would buy a PS5, I wouldn't.

It’s like any Apple product really, people have just spent their hard earned money and then Apple go and release a new version in this case a newer iMac 😂😂😂😂😂 👀👀👀

A lot of people here are highly disappointed or angry because they created a false expectation in their mind of what was going to happen. When that false expectation failed, they blamed Apple instead of taking blame for their own creation. It happens with every release.
That's been happening longer than MacRumors has been a place to discuss Macs.

What you mean to say is that apple will continue to support the intel Macs to well into the end of their useful life. so if you have a need for an Intel Mac that can't be done with the M1 (MacPro, 16" Macbook Pro, or need ogpu support or more than 2 monitors), than yes. Apple has not announced end of support as you allege in you retort, that is many years off and products don't last forever. So you would have a good 5-7 years and then they would keep running, a lot of people keep using Macs at 10-years old (can't do that on a Dell).

And no, I would never buy an Xbox or PS5, my life is too important to waste on gaming

No doubt. It is amplified on here. Lots of adults with Apple pacifiers in their mouths.
that sounded like a more broad and general comment, but thanks for the derogatory negative statement. Like your mama used to say "if you can't say anything nice, best not to say it at all". cheers

I didn't say everyone on here. I said lots. And I stand by my statement. There are a lot of people acting like spoiled kids on here. If my statement doesn't apply to you, then there is no need to be offended. If you are looking to be offended, you will never be let down.

You can forget trying to shame me for speaking the truth.

Ok, still wouldn't buy one 🤷‍♂️ but you can be the Intel advocate if you like. Apple isn't. Are you on pins and needles for the 11th Gen Intel iMacs, because why not right? Oh wait...

I'm not sure 'mad' is correct, more like 'disappointment' but regardless of identifying the sentiment - I think the negative feelings stem from, if you are in the camp that doesn't like the new design, it's here to stay for approximately 9 years judging by the last design timeline.

When it was the iMac G3 and iBook/iPurse, people wanted something different, no matter how good things could be at the time. Then again, I remember going to CompUSA and the iBook keys were missing here and there.🤣

I'm not mad.

I just think that while the design is great, some details ruin it.
- The lack of Apple logo
- The white bezels
- The lack of SD card reader

But I understand this is an entry level imac. I wouldn't buy it anyway. And I'm sure Apple will improve the next 27" or whatever inches, with nicer design details, more ports, and a decent colour.

Cosmetic issues aside, I think part of the disappointment is there's not much differentiation, and the hope was that we might start to see that here. There are entry-level iMacs, but the iMac is also Apple's "enthusiast" line, containing the most powerful systems you can get before shelling out major money for the Mac Pro. Maybe this is Apple's entry-level iMac replacement, but it has the same core system options and even the same limited number of ports as on the other systems. Whether it's a Mac mini, a MacBook (with some slight variations there), or now the iMac, you're basically getting the exact same thing, just in a different form factor. There's a certain beauty in that, but those of us who find the current offerings limiting are hoping for more.

Maybe there's some anxiety over waiting to see just how much more Apple can offer over the M1. Maybe there's some anxiety over when those offerings will be released. Sitting behind a late 2015 iMac 27", I suppose I can put a foot in both of those. We'll get them eventually, but with Apple more firmly in control of how much we will or won't get, the upper limit remains to be seen. I think a lot of us were hoping that the iMac shifting over would help elucidate what that limit might be.

Lots of negativity about the iMac chin! It never bothered me. I bet they could have have made the display thinner than even an iPad if they could only find a place to tuck the power transformer and logic board. Maybe they could have increase the stand size to hold those parts? Maybe make it semi spherical? Wait a minute....:)

The M1 is more than adequate for any of the 5. It's faster than the processors in the devices they replaced.

M1 iMac is way cheaper than the equivalent Mac Mini + 4K Ultrafine + magic keyboard + magic mouse.

Works out to nearly $400 cheaper in Canada.
