Why are so many things only an issue if Apple does it?

You can always just not respond to the opinions you don't value.
When 2/3s or 3/4s of a thread about a new product are just "oh my god that chin" "I can't look at this" "nope it looks like a kids toy" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, it tends to make finding and reading actual thoughtful comments about the product a little harder.

Who cares? Is it any better or worse than pages of "oh that new color will go so well with my curtains!" over and over?

There's usually different threads discussing performance and other aspects, anyways. It's not like any of the influencers/marketers posing as "tech reviewers" gave any more useful insight than what they thought of the design. :p

It's not that different. I'd suggest though, that there are far fewer comments that just say something along the lines of "that colour will go great with my curtains".

I have zero ****s to give about what "tech reviewers" think of a product. That's why I don't read or watch whatever they do.

I do wish to discuss the actual merits of new Apple products, hence, I participate in an apple-focused discussion forum.

The ride quality in my car sucks and they made it too low
Perfect example. Do you go on to your car specific forums and endlessly complain about it? Or a random Reddit page? Do multiple people complain about it simply because of the brand? Do people accuse the company of ‘lying’ and ‘ripping them off’ and endlessly gabbing about how the top spec version of the machine should be half the price due to the fact the design of the car means other things have compromises?

No other tech company, or any other company for that matter, comes under the same scrutiny or are subject to the same deep personal hatred as Apple do. , Even in other tech companies, when advertising the shortcomings to the world (Microsoft, Samsung, Google) then they go ahead and copy almost every aspect for their next phone or whatever.

Apple are even being bashed on the world stage in front of courts and governments, singled out in the AppStore space, even though their operations (cost, walled garden etc) are standard across multiple ecosystems, in varying amounts.

It's a Mercedes, so people accuse them of all sorts of things all the time (I have more criticisms, too) :p People rag on about the German luxury brands all the time, about being overpriced, ripping people off, compromised designs -- you name it! Mostly warranted, I'll add, though many owners will dismiss them as people who are "jealous" and claim it's because they can't afford it (sound familiar?).

Apple is a "luxury" brand, and they're also very polarizing. It's a recipe for attracting scrutiny and creating buzz, and it's not like Apple hasn't done a ton to warrant it. Do you think Apple gets less scrutiny than Tesla, for instance, which has a similar recipe?

Part of why I think some feel it's more targeted at Apple is because people actually care about Apple news and we see it discussed more. Nobody really cares as much about what random PC brands are up to and most people already either dislike or don't care about other brands -- certainly not in the way they do with Apple. Apple made and marketed products in such a powerful way that people really felt connected and excited by the brand (I mean, who else could make a slideshow presentation as exciting as S.J.?). A consequence of that is people who feel very strongly about the brand, to the point of being the "diehard fans" to whom Apple can do no wrong. The natural consequence of that is people who feel the fans are over-the-top and want to point out all the shortcomings.

That's how we got here and I don't really see it happening any other way. I think Apple's been so extremely successful and it's both a requirement and a consequence to that success. :)

This statement depends very much on which part of the world you’re from I think. I picked up a merc for 1.5k a couple of years ago. In Europe whilst still prestigious and luxury, they’re certainly affordable on the secondhand market - depending on age etc obviously.
Haters will hate and whiners will whine, but in comparison the merc example is far far from the same level as the Apple bashing that occurs.

Totally different here in Canada because we only get the "luxury" models, while there's many more basic Mercedes in Europe. In any case, there's the camp to whom they can do no wrong and will go on about "muh German engineering", then there's the camp that thinks they're unreliable money pits that are hardly any nicer than the Japanese brands. Of course, diehard fans of each of the brands (VW/Audi, Mercedes, BMW)... well, at least we aren't as bad as the Subaru clubs I suppose. ;)

Perhaps, but they’re rare at the best of times over here. Plus Tesla gets scrutiny from the tech aspect too, plus they have fingers in many pies and the ceo is polarising. It’s still not on par with Apple though.
