Why I buy macs; I like their laptop range. I like the technology, I like the casing, I like the quality. In my line of work I have to write up lots of design documents, manuals and other materials. OSX feels nice to write in.
Why I'm not going to buy a mac as my main machine again; I need more power than what they offer and upgradability. I don't like their "bang for buck".
I bought my wife a G5 iMac for Christmas 2004. It almost entirely eliminated my "support" issues and I liked what I saw. An iBook for travel followed the next summer, and I switched my desktop system to an iMac with the Intel transition since I needed to be able to run some specialized Windows apps (and still do).
My day job is still Windows and Linux based and unlikely to change. So I guess I'm not a Mac or a PC but some mongrel.

people always ask me that question. and tbh i dont really know the answer. i guess i just love using them. ive grown up on them so why not!?
My parents used to beat me with PC peripherals.

I'm not a mac and I don't attribute any of my characteristics to mac (or vice versa). I use macs because I discovered that I could abuse them as a computer novice (which I was when I started using them) and they wouldn't crash etc on me like my windows machine(s) did. My family is all gradually shifting to macs (I've been using them at home now for 6 years, but in all I've been using them regularly for 11) now. I think the intel transition has done a lot to make macs less intimidating to 'switchers.'
Because now I have too much invested in my Mac (software, iPhone etc.) although I'd like to go back to being a PC. To be honest, I think I'll probably be a PC again by the end of 2010.
PC's aren't necessarily better, but Macs certainly aren't worth the extra £1,000.
If they sort out Snow Leopard, introduce Bluray on their notebooks (which are currently being sold with HD screens?!) and introduce a genuinely new iPhone (with an updated form factor) then I may consider staying Mac.

I'm a mac user because I had the misfortune of picking a Dell Inspiron 2650 instead of a G3 iBook at the beginning of high school. The hardware was poorly designed, undercooled, and ineffecient. XP pre SP2 was awful. I finally wiped the drive and put on SuSE 9 or so. Then a scout leader sold me one of his company's soon-to-be-replaced Sawtooth G4s, I loaded Panther on, and the madness began

I use both, at work, a PC and home a Mac (though I use win7 at home for work as well )
I've been using a Mac since the Mac SE/30 days and I've always liked the interface and how it allowed me to do what I wanted to do. I've always owned a PC as well. What the mac lacked in its classic OS was the ability to get down in the nuts and bolts of the OS and so the PC satisfied that itch. When it comes to the graphical interface, the Mac has always one that battle hands down.

Bottom line: I got tired of windows. My Dell desktop was terrible beyond words, and windows always seemed to be causing problems of some sort or another. I moved to an iMac as my personal computer in 2004 and it was a genius decision.

Now, I don't put a price on frustration and misery. OSX does what I want, when I want it to, without the hassles I was used to. So I spend twice as much initially to keep the computer twice as long...doesn't seem like I am losing anything, as my Dell lasted about 2 years before going to crap, and my iMac is four years old and still cranking away without a single issue of any kind.
My iPod touch does nearly everything I ask it to, and the things I want it to do, it does very well.
Would I like a 10" tablet mac do streamline some stuff? Sure. I'll wait for it.

My parents bought the original Macintosh back when I was a little kid, and just kind of stuck with them through the years. We had PCs too, but especially back then, as a kid the superior resolution of the Mac really kind of lured me in. Later the PCs caught up, but by then I was simply more comfortable on the Mac and stuck with it.

Used some Macs in elementary school. PowerMac AIO's, Mac LC's, iMac G3's, Apple II/IIc's, etc. Got me interested in them.
LC575 + simcity2000 + lemmings + spectre + os7.1 = full HDD and years of entertainment!

Holy crap! Exactly how long were you in elementary school?
Too long.
We used iMac G3's in all the school's computer labs; the classrooms got the hand-me-down Macs. (Which I actually liked more then the iMac's at the time since it was System 7 vs. OS 8. ) There was actually a very large variety of them throughout the school. The music lab had an Apple IIe and a IIc running some old music teaching software. It was very cool.
She hates Apple keyboards so much, she's trying to break them all.
It wasn't really meant as a joke.
It's one thing to hear some great stories, but asking for great stories about Mac purchases is taking the whole "I use a Mac" thing a bit too far.
