well its not always...

Las Vegas (the Show) doesnt cover the logo's and there are a few other shows...

Another show where the lead character uses an uncovered Mac laptop is Showtime's "Dexter." He often seems to have his PB/MBP with him during his extra-curricular activities...

Not sure Apple really wants to be associated with vigilante serial-killers, but at least the guy is somewhat creative. :p

It is both because apple is not paying for the placement and the other side of covering their legal butts. If they had the apple logo on it and did something apple did not approve of then they risk getting hit with a law suit. They legally have to have permission to use a trade mark. Mostly is all has to do with covering there legal rears.

Also you have to remember there are a lot more apple haters out there than apple lovers. By displaying the apple logo they risk ticking off more people than they would by cover it up. The apple haters group is a lot large so the odds of losing some one by showing the apple logo are a lot higher than ticking off one of the apple lovers who walk away from the show because the logo is covered up.
.

I was watching Without a Trace last night and the guy was in a library, and asked to use a computer. He was definitely on an iMac, as no other computer looks like that. :p Then, he asked the librarian how to print something, and the library said "control + p". Not only did they cover up the logo with what looked like circular duct tape, but why say control p instead of command p if he is on a mac. :)

I do wonder at what point does product placement go too far. There is a commercial for (I believe Nissan) that uses an iMac. Between the almost full screen of the "iMac" on the back and half screen Apple logo on the front, it feels more like an Apple ad than a car ad. Similarly, I remember the Nuprin shot better than almost any other from Wayne's World...

I have noticed apple computers in a lot of commercials lately. One I can remember is for Netflix where the guy walks into the room and tells all the "movies" they're being shipped out. He's using a white iBook G4. You can see the writing on it pretty clearly. I've also seen a lot of iMacs in car commercials and all kinds of others lately.

Found it funny when Veronica Mars has to hide the logo and even have an ugly wi-fi card sticking out of the side of her mac laptop at the beach in a recent ep.

Pretty sure that was meant to be a Sprint/Verizon EVDO card. The producers also concoct some really lame Aqua-esque UIs for the show too, while other times it looks spot on. Go figure.

when in doubt cover that logo with a post-it

I find it ironic that our ISP has a commercial with some lady using a Powerbook where they did a poor job of covering up the logo (there's an off shade grey box where the logo should be) yet if you call them you have to lie and say you use Windows because they won't touch Macs with a 10 foot pole

I think I saw an ISP ad like that too. The family was also watching a Sony XBR TV, but it had a black rectangle over the Sony logo.

I also notice print ads that show ugly pc's running Safari.

An odd note. Drew Carry is a big Mac fan, but when an entire office full of iMac G4s appeared on his show the screens were all lowered to hide the Apple logos on the front and Post-it notes where placed over the logos on the back. Talk about piontless.

Most prominent appearance? Remember that Powerbook ad from the first Mission Impossible movie, or was that a movie trailer that featured a Powerbook.

Perhaps because they don't want to promote product placement. I noticed that too in several commercials.

There was such an example right now on the Will & Grace show, but I've seen this done on many shows.

ive seen it on the will and grace show too, but they covered it with a bunch of post-its. so weird!

Theres an ad on TV in England at the moment for 'Picture' a loans company  It REALLY pisses me off (along with most ads). There is a football in it that has no real need to be in the ad but yet they still have a 'Mitre' branded football then black out the logo with tape. WTF? The ball is flat too.

Just use another football!

Damn I hate TV ads.

Anyhoo... back on topic I see Apple stuff blacked out in ads all the time. I look at it this way: If Apple dont think they are worth paying to promote their own brand then the product/service they are selling isnt worth using. :D

Yeah, I've been seeing that a lot lately. But it doesn't bother me as much as seeing an obvious Windows PC with a Mac OS X screen. Of course the Apple logo is missing from the menu bar though.

It's all good I think.

If I would be a director I wouldn't want the viewers attention on a freaking computer.

And a bright Apple logo is definitely an attention seeker.

It seems like almost every commercial or show where they use a computer, that computer is a mac. No surprise there, considering how damn ugly every pc notebook I've seen is. Sony Vaio is the best looking, but still nowhere near the mac.

On the new Nissan commercial with the Red truck (whatever its called) I couldn't keep my eyes off the iMac.

We have a commercial just like that here. They're using a MB running Windows, and the apple logo is covered up. They supposedly don't support macs, but I'm using their service right now on my mac.

I understand the thing about covering the logo, but creating really bad offshoots of a GUI is what kind of irks me. Why go through all that trouble to create a different GUI when the one that's already on there doesn't really qualify for product placement? And yeah, don't you just love those ads where they're advertising a PC-only product, but the computer they're using it with is clearly a Mac? :p

Mac attack

Want to see macs on tv? Watch Nova. Scientists love makes and are not affraid to show it. They are usually out numbered by random Unix boxes though. Lots of Sun Solaris systems at Nasa.
