I wish they could've increased the battery life.

This is one item that continually frustrates me with Apple. I know the effective battery life has varied greatly from iPad to iPad (with I think the OG iPad Air coming in around 13 hours), but that has slowly declined over the years. Granted my iPad Pro 10.5" is nearly 3 years old, but the battery life is pretty sub-par. In 10 years Apple hasn't raised the iPad's "All Day" battery life from it's standard 10 hours. And while I never get Apple's stated life, I get excited when they increase it even by an hour because I should see SOME kind of improvement.

I was really disappointed in 2018 when Apple made the redesigned iPad Pro's even thinner. I would think if there was ever a case for a slightly thicker and heavier iPad, make it the Pros and let the iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini focus on that sweetspot of size and battery life. Apple could couple a slightly thicker design with energy savings form the more efficient A13X (or ramp up the performance that much more) and have 12+ hours. Even the 2013 MacBook Air had better battery life. Instead they seem to be happy with the 10 hours and use all optimizations to increase the thickness and weight of the device.

The iPhone 11 Pro is the first mobile Apple device where I'm truly happy with the battery life.

------

I didn't upgrade to the iPad Pro 2020 primarily because of the A12Z. I know it's plenty fast now and will be fine for years to come, but I don't see Apple waiting another 18 months to update the iPad (making 3 years they used effectively the same chip). I think this update just tells me that there will be another update within the next year and I'm fine waiting especially since the A13 was such an important update for the iPhone, I'm excited to see the iPad implication of the A14X.

Bought the 2020, used it for a day and realised it was bloody overkill as a consumption device. Couldn’t justify the money, especially at this point in time. I realised I would be just as happy with the 2018 model.

Returned it for the 2018 Pro (which was on sale) and some extra cash in my pocket. Feels fantastic!

I will be happy to upgrade in a few years when we see a meaningful update, but for now this 2018 model is a huge step up compared to my old iPad Air 2.

My 2018 11” IPP is still more than enough for my needs, so I had no need to update to the 2020 model at all.

Other: No logic x yet (come on WWDC).
Also, any mobile device I buy going forward I want 5G compatibility. The chip, bending concerns and timing were other big ones.

Folds like a lawn chair. Deal breaker for me. I know a lot of people have unbent devices and are really happy with them, but for my peace of mind I need a bit more margin of error. It needs to be at least as strong as the Air 2 I have now.

To be honest, I never had to put all my strength into folding a lawn chair, must less make a YouTube video about it. :D

Pure hyperbole. When people talk like this, you may as well delete having read their post in your head

After returning three bent 2018 iPad Pro 11" and getting an iPad Air 3 instead I see no reason to consider the new one because:

  • It appears to be just as bendy
  • As far as I can gather it has the same screen coating that makes every disgusting smudge very visible
  • It has the same sharp edges making it unpleasant to pick up and hold
  • It has a camera bump so that it cannot lie flat on a desk

Why didn’t you purchase the new 2020 iPad Pro?
A few reasons for me. But I have to say one silly thing is that frugly 2-camera oven thing. I don’t mind it on the iPhone Pro as they color matched that and made it a bit more elegant.
BUT
The other big reasons are no MiniLED, no 7000 aluminum, no new 5nm A14X (with 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU,) it doesn’t have better brightness or further HDR/Dolby Vision support, no Dolby atmos sound, and WiFi 6 is good only if one has the internet devices for that (but that won’t be the norm for a little while.)
The ONLY thing I would maybe upgrade for is RAM... BUT that’s only because I like more RAM period. But it absolutely wasn’t/isn’t needed for what I and most users do.
The thing I would rather do if I HAD to get more RAM is figure out where to buy a new unopened (unbent) 1TB 2018 Pro.
this LiDAR thing for the iPad IMO is pointless (even watching the demos and reading the reason Apple did it, it still is stupid to me.) What Apple Should have done was have ONE camera with the LiDAR sensor (not an extra ultra-wide) is there an actual reason for two cameras? I imagine the LiDAR could work with one.
*This is a dumb reason to many, I’m sure, but I LOVE the more simplistic 1-camera design of the 3rd iPad Pro, the extra camera and stove-top design does indeed make the 2020 look pretty lame to me.

Kallum.

Choice 1: iPad Pro 2020
Choice 2: iPad Pro 2018 + Magic Keyboard

As crazy as the Magic Keyboard price is, its far less crazy than buying a new iPad that is almost identical to the previous cheaper model. So I’m going with the 2018 + MK.

I agree. However in these uncertain times keeping the cash to live on seems much more important at the moment.

I have an 11" 2018 iPad pro here...Ordered the 2020 12.9" iPad pro as a i desired a larger screen mainly due to eye sight issues yet also wanted the larger screen for online learning purposes.

Than the accnounment of a possible newer release comes out in the fall a day after i ordered, and i start reading the threads here about that. So in the box it sits still as I debate whether or not i want to keep it or wait.

Chances are I will keep it, the talk about a new chip and mini-LED is intriguing, but i also think those things largely be something i would not notice a great deal

I was hoping this would be the update to push me off my 9.7", but.. don't really want to feel like I'm buying a 1.5 year old ipad with better camera, and the 9.7" still works perfectly fine for what I need.

You hit the nail on the head with this list...IMO! For me, the IPP is a media consumption device as much as anything and these features added would be a big update to an already great product. I’m hanging onto my 10.5 IPP for another cycle to see if these features come to the 2021 IPP.

Not much of a performance bump over the 2018, even the 2017..

When I saw that I could order a refurbished 2018 iPad Pro 12.9" 256GB from Apple, I returned my 2020 11" 128GB. I realized that I didn't need the upgraded camera system with LiDAR, and the actual improvements in speed and power were minimal. I also have little need for the U1 chip and WIFI 6.

They don't look like they have changed enough from the 2018 iPad Pro to make me buy one. I plan on saving some money and just upgrade the keyboard to new magic keyboard.

Perhaps this Pro release was designed/intended for non Pro owners? Apple has to know their audience, most customers who own the 2018 Pro, even some 2017 Pro owners don’t really see enough improvements to upgrade.
But for all the 6th gen and older models, this is a great upgrade in terms of hardware.
Maybe the rumor of the 5G and A14 Pro are slated for the existing Pro users.......maybe later this year or beginning of next........wishful thinking.

I'm very vaguely in the market for a new iPad. I'm currently using the iPad Air 64GB I bought in 2013 and I'm aware that at some point I'll need to replace it as it's getting full. Whilst I'm glad that with this release there's an option of a Smart Folio in a colour that would work for me namely Cactus - a colour I think is neither boring (like Black) nor prone to looking dirty (like Pink Sand and White), I don't feel like I'd be maximising my budget if I bought now. It seems like this is a 17 month old iPad.

I was so excited about this release but then when I saw the minimal performance bump, I decided against it. It's the same reason I didn't get the 2018. Once there's a large bump, I will purchase it.
