Because it was there...

I'm a Realtor, and sadly everything in my industry has been designed for Windows and Internet Explorer. My Mac still runs Windows faster than my Dell Inspiron and with OS 10.5 and Fusion I can easily switch between active applications on my Mac and in Windows with no noticeable lag time. I'm working on converting many agents in my office, and once they see Windows running on my new MacBook (give me a couple of months), I know that the conversions will come easy.

Oh - and I also have all my finances on Microsoft Money. It's not great, but does what I need it to do with minimal effort.

The new MacBook is one of the best-designed laptops out there, and OS X is not for me. So I run Windows on it, just like I would with any other laptop.

It's called choice. Or personal preference. I am really getting sick of these damn Mac fanboys who think that using Windows for any reason whatsoever is some kind of mortal sin. If Windows is your preferred OS or you need it for whatever reason, that's great. And if you consider that Apple makes some really great hardware, then it would only make sense that Apple hardware will run Windows beautifully.

Why I want to use XP on a Mac

I just ordered the new MacBook Pro. I make my living in Solidworks and have gone through 6 PC laptops in 5 years - what a waste! I am buying the new MacBook Pro to use as a PC to run Solidworks and make a living. I am buying it for the chassis and hopefull durability. I just read a bunch of posts in other threads that say XP and Vista will crash under bookcamp. Now I am out $2k+ and another $200 for a new XP install disk and questioning the wisdom of ever having made this switch. If I had read these posts prior to the purchase I would not have placed the order. I Just called Apple support and they could not say what was going to be a more stable operating system under bootcamp - so now I don't even have my 1st mac in my hands and am already not looking forward to going through the problems posted in these forums! My email is ken.hawthorn@gmail.com if there is someone in the SF Bay Area near San Jose that wants to help me with any XP install problems that look like they are bound to pop up! Everyday I am without access to Solidworks I am out real$$$

In all my two years and two Macbook Pro version I never ever had a crash under windows XP SP2.
I realized the hardware is so much integrated that XP have no problem at all!
Go on with the best PC on the market. MacBook Pro!

Have you ever tried to Firmware Upgrade a Nokia Phone?
Have you ever tried to back up a Nokia Phone?

This it is impossible to do under OSX and I'd be happy to.. but for some reason Nokia like any other software house is reluctant to build under MAC OS the own programs.
That's sad!

Interesting point, and I wonder now that the iPhone has been out for a while if companies like Nokia/Motorola etc will scale back on their OSX offerings or step them up to provide more complete offerings to compete against Apple.

I personally wouldn't be at all surprised to see people running Windows on an Apple system symply because of the cool factor Apple hardware has. Given the cost of some of the high end non Apple laptops I'm sure some people can spend similar money for the Apple product and just use a different OS. Once Apple changed over to Intel processors and used more common hardware it was only going to be a matter of time before you had Windows on a Mac in some way shape or form.

why would bootcamp be available on mac then? its there so people can use windows. i don't see anything wrong with windows, i use it, its great, does what i need it to do without any problems.

I know there are heaps of people that say 'why do people *topic*' these are people who don't use any windows software. Just like i question people who drive crazy big cars on the road, because I don't doesn't mean others shouldn't feel the need in my area either.

ill be picking up my new macbook next week, installing bootcamp/vmware so i can use both.
And purely for the reason its a sturdy unit, and runs windows very well as compared to other systems on the market.

I just switched to Mac this summer, but I run Windows via Fusion mainly for work-related tasks. My company's VPN has problems with OS X, and some of the online tools we use require Internet Explorer. I also use it to stream Netflix, and it occasionally comes in handy for other things.

I refuse to use it in boot camp environment and have a separate rig for gaming.

I do run Windows Xp Pro in vmware fusion for work - to access the work network, vpn and access to my clients.

That seems like such a waste. Everyone is so up in arms about the Apple price premium. Your logic doesn't make sense when you consider the argument above.

It must be the thing if you're used to having Windows. Personally, I've never owned or had a personal computer that ran Windows, so I don't have any reason for it now. No old programs or games to run, so I have no need or desire to waste my hard drive space on that trash.

How does my logic not make sense? What argument do I need to consider? I thought my logic was pretty damn simple. I like the new MacBook, and I like Windows, so I run Windows on the new MacBook. Simple as that. I never complained about price premiums or anything like that.

I've read dozens of posts in MacRumors from people using CAD software on their Macs... and these would be older Macs. You probably have a great Apple Store so worst case, you could schedule time with a Genius for help setting everything up. Additionally, experienced users rave that Vista works better on a Mac than anything else. If your new machine is working properly, then it should run all that stuff as well as it does for everyone else.

I have no need for Windows/Microsoft anymore and I don't miss it. I used Office on an older Macbook Pro for a while then uninstalled it and went to iLife.

Yeah so how come people run windows on a mac? What improves it in their eyes?
I can run Windows on a Mac, but I can't run OS X on Windows. So a Mac is obviously the best solution. And since there are things the Mac doesn't do well enough just yet, I can run Windows as needed.

* I need Windows for MS Money 2003, until there's a good OS X finance program
* My 401k website is IE-only specific and I need Windows to access it
* I only have a Windows VNC client to work from home.
* Games

I'm not sure what your concern is? Windows XP runs fine in BootCamp. But it's still WinXP and will crash as often or rarely as it would on any other laptop.

As for going through a laptop annually, in my experience that's not due to Windows, but the user. I would guess need the fastest computer every year, or you're very rough on them physically, or you're indiscriminately installing dubious downloaded programs causing malware problems. None of these cases would be changed with a MacBook Pro. Windows is still Windows and can be corrupted by viruses; if you need the fastest computer every year, you'll need a new MBP next year too; and if you're rough on your hardware your MBP will suffer too.

Because they like to pay a bunch of money for a good computer and then wreck it by putting windows on it trust me I know I had an Imac and just recently switched back to windows so I could do school work at home and I am realizing why people say windows stinks.

So to sum it up if you have a mac use their OS :apple:

I use mine for school related activities (which is what I should be doing now....) and games. :)

I would never actually spend the $200 to buy it though. Way overpriced.

I more or less have to use it for Excel '07, since iWork's Numbers sucks, don't even get me started on Office '08 for Mac, and I haven;t really tested out OpenOffice yet.

I tried both XP, then Vista when I got my hands on a copy, and I must say that for virtualization, VISTA BLOWS! It hogged a lot more resources and ran like a slug when given the same resources as XP. But that is another rant for another day.

Having the option to use either/or of the OS's definitely adds value to my MB.

For those who buy a Mac then run ONLY windows, I will politely say that you are f*cking retards, and leave it at that. I don't care how fancy the MB's look, they are most definitely overpriced for what you are getting when used with Windows. You pay a premium to get the privilege to easily run OSX, and no amount of aesthetics should sway you into getting a Mac for PC-only usage. Get a Dell for Windows only, they run MUCH MUCH MUCH cooler, you can get a dedicated video card for under $1000, and other goodies. Just my two cents, but I suppose that if you have more than two cents to throw away, why not give :apple: your money; that way they can make it better for those of us who use Mac's for Macintosh-ing :D

haha I second that. I personally have NEVER paid for a Microsoft product (despite the fact that I have Office '00, '04, '07, & '08, + XP and Vista  This in no way suggests that I stole any of that :p)

[edit]
That, and it cracks me up the sheer number of versions of Windows there are. (XP Home, XP media, XP Pro, Vista Home 32, Vista Home pro 32, Vista home pro 64, vista business 32, vista business 64, vista ultimate) lol that sure is a mouthful...

If you're talking about full time, I'd say it's because the hardware is great, the computers look fantastic, and in the case of the MacBook Pro, it is the thinnest and close to the lightest laptop in its respective classes.

If you're talking about through Fusion or Parallels, because they need to run apps or want to try out Windows.
