Or you could plug in your iPhone, hit Restore using a Pwnage tool created .ipsw and unlock your iPhone for usage.

really when your not near a computer like say in the middle of the city touring??? No offense I am not going to go to Italy just to pay over 700 dollars for a phone. 2 if my phone breaks or anything I can't do anything about it. I totally agree can do that. But Im not made out of money. :(

Nothing sucks balls more than being in a foreign country with only your iPhone and it says "Connect to iTunes" with no options to just use the damn phone when you need it. That happened to my friend this summer when I was in the Dominican Republic, she was using a Orange SIM (Great GSM service there too I might add) and her iPhone crapped out and had that message luckily she had a blackberry to pop the SIM into but its just a pain.

Thank you!

Neither am I made of money, that is why before I travel I check that everything I intend on taking on the trip works. If I am taking my knowingly locked iPhone, I will look for a way to unlock it before leaving home.

It's not rocket science.

No i know Ive been to Europe with the 2g iPhone and 3g iPhone unlocked through hacking. The 2g was fine but then the 3g was a bit tricky the radio kept giving out and I had to eventually restore and reunlock.

Another problem is that where I went, there was no internet in my house, I had to go to a cafe. so what do you do if your phone needs to to download the unlock to actually unlock it? Or if it craps out on you when your not near a computer or wifi?

So hence other phones can be unlocked win sadly :/ It sucks, its a great smartphone(iPhone) but when it comes to traveling its frustrating.

However, there is one small detail. Your Internetless situation is not the same for many (or the majority) people.

Now, in your case, yes it sucks, but it doesn't have to mean the iPhone is frustrating.

It is true, well ya if you live here and never perfect. But for me its frustrating or for business people who travel its could be frustrating if they want to have prepaid. Unless your company pays for the roaming charges. Then go ahead :D

This is true, and it is also true that those companies who use iPhones are vulnerable.

many security experts disagree with you. Though many agree with you, to be fair.

Let me put it this way - have you yet heard of a security breach due to using iPhones instead of bb? Yeah, me neither.

The worlds finanical business right now is conducted on Blackberry. If you are in a major financial city in the US, check outside at suits in the morning, at lunch, and on the way home, they are on BBs, and their is a damn good reason for it.

I am one of those "suits" in one of those cities, and you are right, but the reason is not good - it's mostly inertia. BB has been the corporate standard for so long it will take a while to change. But change it will because bb is horribly primitive compared to other options, and an entrenched position can only protect you for so long.

You don't get it. Some uncontrollable cache error occurs, or your iPhone has some random error which is pretty common IMO and you can't just do a hard reset you have to plug it into a computer. I would gladly pay roaming charges to download an unlock in a foreign country but thats not the issue here. I can't trust the iPhone to function like every other GSM phone during travels, Ill take a blackberry with me to a foreign country with a bitter taste in my mouth but happy it won't **** the bed when I need it most. You can check to "make sure everything is working" before your trip but when your iPhone craps out and you can't even so much as go on google maps to find the nearest apple store (lets see in the Dominican Republic that's not gonna happen). Apple insists on making all there devices so damn dependent on itunes and with the iPhone it seams every error that could be easily fixed on any other smart phone you need to plug it into iTunes.

I don't like roaming charges, which is why my iPhone is unlocked since day 1, that way I avoid any charges when I travel.

Some business guys are smart enough to save by unlocking or buying a pricier legally unlocked iPhone (hard hit first nothing later)

Flawed argument. Just tell all those Pwnage/Blackra1n unlocked iPhone users that their device isn't dependent. I go to my home country every now and then and need a good communication. I trust my iPhone for that. Never has it given me problems.

again thank you, see with the old iphones it was still actually possible, but with the new bootrom on the new 3gs's your screwed. :/ its literally a brick until you get home. You can't even listen to music to calm yourself down :/

you are just lucky then, ive had problems. But what if you just need to restart the iPhone or battery dies(this is for the 3gs). Its just not reliable for emergencies, if the phone shut off even for a stupid application failure :/

Sudden failures? That sounds more like hardware, not software.

so you've never had a jailbroken app restart your phone before, or even the ipod crashed on me and made the phone reboot. This was on my 3g and 2g phone. Well if it hasnt happen to you yet, it will eventually happen if not then lucky you.

I'm going to play the typical consumer here; I don't care what it is I just need it to work or Ill be spitting nails. That's the mindset of allot of people whether you and I like it. Sure I can unlock an iPhone, clear the cache every 5 hours, figure out how to get foreign SIM's working but not everyone is half as computer savvy as that or as patient. Believe me I have allot of patience until I see the genus like 5 times in 6 month's....

What do you mean by "clear the cache"? I've never done that...

I see. But I've never had to do that and my iPhone works great. I would imagine that the Blackberry would need it more than the iPhone since it runs apps in the background.

well it doesnt matter the phone is still reliable and doenst need to be restored or anything like that. And its unlocked officially without the threat to the phone. But true battery pulls are common on blackberries haha

From my experience, a lot of people who uses blackberries are the people who hates touch screen.

If you're a Storm owner, it's the other way around. You'll hate touch screens AFTER you use a Blackberry.

If you pay exorbitant roaming fees, sure. You can toss any SIM you want into any gsm berry, or many cdma berries and have it work. Without voiding your warranty.

Not to mention, unlike international text, international BBM is included in your data plan.

Good point. Though I'd argue many Blackberry users are corporate and they don't have to worry about the roaming charges since the company foots the bill.

Exactly. The way the iPhone is so dependent on iTunes even with the 3.0 update irks me and would never hold up for business use. The iPhone is too much of a play phone. Blackberry is srsbsn.

The "iPhone is a toy" comment tossed around by many is bull. The Blackberry also relies on a PC application to update firmware and such. Other than firmware updates, the only reason you NEED iTunes is to activate the phone and run backups. You can do everything else (buy music and apps for example) on the phone itself if you want. Just because the iPhone and iTunes does lots of fun stuff as well doesn't make it "a toy". It is also a serious business-capable phone used by people all over the world for that purpose. But yes, there are many who can only meet their business needs with a Blackberry. That's fine. But that doesn't make the iPhone a toy.
