Yes, and with the Note specifically, most certainly. Expandable storage, headphone jack, s-pen with all of its small but neat tricks, several small (and useful) software additions. All things that are useful to me specifically. No reason to troll as if what I said was invalid.

My use case and what I want out of a device, isn't necessarily what everyone else wants, and I feel like I acknowledged that. I know that Android (and more specifically this Note) gives me more than what I can get from iOS.

I like both platforms, and I have a Note 8, and I'm genuinely interested in the additional features that you find useful. I expanded my storage with a 256 gb SD card which is nice. I still use my AirPods over Bluetooth, though, so the headphone jack hasn't come into play yet. The S Pen is cool, but I find myself just using it in place of my finger to limit the screen smudges. Once I customized everything, I pretty much don't change it anymore. I guess this is a bit off topic, but I'm curious as to how others use their Note in ways that they find unique and helpful so that I can incorporate these ideas into my usage.

And then you listed hardware for your Note, instead of Android related Tons of things list.
This is an Android vs iOS discussion... sport.
Oh, then you missed the part where I said this.

I’ve used Android for over 6 years.

You named things that are not Android related, but hardware that is available on your Note.

You trolled your self there sport.

Next time don’t exaggerate with TONS OF THINGS, makes you look foolish.
If the only realistic hardware that runs iOS is Apple’s, it’s a bit academic to separate the two. It’s not precisely an iOS issue, but it is an Apple issue and the two are inextricably linked.

Yes I did see it but you didn’t list any of them. So where are those additions exactly?

There is no issue with Apple or iOS. Just because you can’t run iOS on 5 or 50 different phones, doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.

Look at an Android. Too many phones, too many variables in hardware, too many flavors in Android OS for each make and model.... this lowers quality OS it self.

UI customization
Multi-Window app support
A true file system
Always on display
S-Pen related software tricks
Other very minor tweaks I don't feel like listing to appease you

Not everyone cares about some, if any of these features, and that's fine. There's no denying there are more software features with Android though.

Well, there is an issue if you want to expand memory, for one thing. My understanding — and I haven’t looked for a while, so maybe it’s different — is that many android phones can use the FM functionality and Apple wouldn’t do so.

If there were no issues, people wouldn’t have to jailbreak, for the most part.

Apple does have the advantage of fewer hardware and software targets. My point, however, wasn’t that iOS should run on different hardware, but that it skirts up to disingenuous to separate hardware and software when it comes to Apple because it’s a package deal in a way android isn’t.

The only thing I used to miss when I first got an iPhone is A true File system. I’ve learned to live with out it and no longer care for it.

The rest you listed, is personal preference that you like sport. It doesn’t make Android any better because of them.

I used to root and debloat every Samsung Galaxy phone I owned and other people’s Android phones; to slim down the Android OS , to remove 3rd party apps and services.

For the past year, I had zero reason to jailbreake my iPhone.

Flash Storage is case by case, depends if manufacturer will add an SD card slot. Most Android phones have an SD card slot , many don’t. But this has nothing to do with Android self.

Apple can add few lines of code to support SD cards.

Again, I didn't say it made Android better. And for the record, the thread title is asking for personal preference. Hence why it's titled "Why do you prefer..."

You clearly took some level of offense to my original post, which was actually in support of iOS. Weird. I'm moving on from this conversation.

I didn’t take offense but, I did call you out on “TONs of things” that you can do on your Note but not on your iPhone X.

It’s ok, I make mistakes as well. You don’t have to live, we can continue being best of enemies and fight together against Evil Corp.;)

And I can show you one from Samsung too or Google that shows the same stuff.

This is another one of the common comments I see on MR but don’t really get. I do enjoy iOS but in 6 years have never struggled to do anything that I can’t do on it. I do exactly the same tasks I did when I had an Android phone? I often find this ‘locked down’ comment is a techie bragging right that can’t be explained.
Unless you use Android, you don't get to see how much you were locked down as. Go to the Alternatives section and read the Note 9 topics, you will understand.
[doublepost=1536275292][/doublepost]
The lock down comments are pure rubbish

There’s nothing I can’t do on my iPhone that I ever did on my android devices. My usage is the same. It just works far better with other devices.

Sadly, you are so wrong. Try say the same thing in the Alternatives forum and you will be proven wrong.

Yep, I like the one where I can have my WIFI turn on, NFC turn off, and other things when I get home automatically. Oh, yeah, you can't do that on the iPhone.

The lack of lock down on Android, favorites pirates of software, music and movies.

There I said.

Android is great for people who illegally download; music, software/apps, movies, etc.

That is it!!!

You can install an illegaly downloaded app on iOS, but it will have to be reinstalled after 7 days using a software in windows or MacOS.

You can install and download what ever, on to Android device with out using PC or Apple computer. And you don’t have reinstall it For a year.

Apple, locked down on the piracy in iOS, nothing more!

And no 3rd party apps or services on iOS, collecting data and selling it to mothership.
It is true apple does do some data collection, but they don't do it to track you across the internet. They have to collect some data for various reasons. And it is true you can opt-in for the purpose of receiving notices of recommended services for Apple related products. And they do collect information via differential analysis, which I really don't care about as that is opt-in as well.

Then there is the issue of rogue apps being nefarious. It seems that this type of thing is not as prevalent on IOS as android, but "bad" apps have in the past made it into the app store.

It is easier to get a gun( I have gun license), then opt out from Google data collection.

The maze I have to navigate through, to opt out from all or most Google data collection, is enough reason to take Prozac. Step after step, deep hideout level 5 through level 20 settings, past 100 level DonkeyKong. Pee in a cup, “are you sure” dozen screens.

I just want a single “No” option. Or pay me 90% for my data sales.

This is why I have fully converted to Apple products . I turn my Apple device On and I use it as intended. No fuss no mess and no lawsuit.

You dont think that Apple spies too?

If Google wants to spy on me and see which porn sites I go to, more power to them. I don't care.

If Apple spies on what porn I watch, more power to them. Because I am a kinky mofo.

Milfs over 60 are my favorite.

Women over 50 and 60, have beautiful bodies, if they take care of them selfs.

I’m proud and open about my sex life.
But I’m not a child pedophile.

I switch back and forth all the time. The reality is both operating systems have pros and cons.

Android on mobile devices (not tablets) runs pretty well and third party apps generally work just fine. There are things I prefer over iOS like the customization of the home screen, different themes, etc. Even split screen.

Home page customization is one area where I think iOS can really benefit. I honestly think next year's iOS refresh will address this. Forcing all the apps to show on my home screen stinks and the snap to grid agitates me. Having a background image on the home page is almost useless. I also feel like the settings for individual apps should reside within the app, not the Settings app.

But iMessage does work really well and when you have a family on iPhones, it's easier to just have the family set up there in one spot.

Thanks for the TMI. Lol

Of course they do. Becomes abundantly clear once you read the user agreement. They even tell you that unless you’re okay with them collecting and sharing your data, some features of the device will not be available (and by some you know they mean almost all of them).

Someone posted a link to the user agreement a few threads back. Can’t possibly be more blatantly stated.

On the iPhone there’s no need to turn off WiFi in the first place. Surely that’s better than you having to turn your WiFi off for whatever reason and then programme it to automatically come back on again?

I’m a typical user rather than an enthusiast so regardless of what platform I use I tend to do the same things. Having watched videos and read up on the Note 9 I’ve seen its potential, but it’s a specialist device and a phablet so it’s hardly comparable to smaller and more popular devices anyway.

Well, realistically, it is not practical. Firstly, many 3rd party apps make use of Google services so your info gets to Google anyway when you use those apps. And it is unlikely that anyone dont use Google search, youtube or maybe Google map. So the only way is to pack away your iphone and revert to paper and ink :p

I think those of us on Android or Samsung Galaxy/ can see the flexibility it provides compared to iOS/Iphone. But of course if to a regular Joe Blogg who doesnt use the phone to its fullest then there is not much different.

But to those who wanted to do more, Android is still more flexible and capable. Just a quick rundown (I have this list from long ago, just imagine - just updated with info of Note9) - and it seems iphone still can't do many of these capabilities. Of course some of these, you can have in Iphone with complicated workarounds. But fact is Android can do much more easier. And if you WANTED :) you can make it more capable and explore other use cases that are not available with Iphone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardware

- S-PEN: stylus with 4000 level of pressure sensivity. Screen and stylus designed as a package to give complete pen/draw experience (unlike Ipen which is just a tag on). S-Pen is BT capable so can be use as basic remote camera/presentation clicker or usage can be customized for individual apps. Pen charges in seconds.

- Headphone jack

- Dual SIM card support. No need to carry 2 phones around.

- Built-in memory upto 512gb and MicroSD card support - up to 1 TB (future proof)

- Built-in heart rate/SP02/stress sensor

- USB Type C with usb-host /4K HDMI out/ DEX support

- LED Notification Light: Get reminder of missed events discretely.

- Fingerprint sensor for instant unlock.

- Dual Aperture camera - For better low light capability

- 2 microphones for stereo audio recording

Connectivity

- SIDESYNC : operate phone from any PC/mac (i.e. not proprietary) within wifi network. Phone screen appears as a virtual window in PC/mac. You can use PC mouse/speaker/mic to make calls or continue an editing session or run any apps in the phone from the PC. Similar to Iphone hand-off/continuity but more flexible (without needing to login to same account for all devices).

- DEX docking station- transform phone into a full desktop experience. Let you do basic desktop workflows without needing another desktop PC.

- WIFI Display (or miracast) built-in. Mirror phone screen to any wifi-capable TV without any additional setup or intermediate hardware (like apple tv). Or reverse mirror any TV screen to phone.

- WIFI sharing - use phone to act as wifi repeater/router for other devices

- Transfer any files between ANY devices via Wifi-Direct / BT. No additional setup/hardware requirement.

- Plug in portable disk/thumbdrive directly to phone using usb cable. Quickly transfer out your files/photos/videos (without going through slow and expensive cloud storage). Or just play a video off your portable drive. Or use mouse to interact with phone.

- Play music to 2 different sound devices via BT 5.0 (e.g. share music to 2 BT headsets). Also set individual app to specific sound source e.g. waze to always output sound to phone speakers and music players to BT. Using sound assistant you can set up different sound profiles depending on situations. Use Adapt Sound to fine tune sound to match you.

- Samsung Pay - can be used at more outlets (since it supports both NFC and magnetic strip)

- File System: something fundamental that we have been using (that's missing from Iphone). You can load any files into internal storage and ANY installed apps can use those files directly (no need for workaround using expensive and slow cloud storages)

- VR headset support - a whole new experience for you to explore

- With Samsung Connect + SmartThings Hub - provide an integrated systems to connect/manage your TV/fridge/appliances or home audio/visual and home accessories like lights/sensors. SmartThings supports most home automation protocols and there many more 3rd party devices support compared to Homekit.

OS / Software

AOD - always on display. simple and yet very useful. Plus you can theme it as well.

Multi-Window - run apps in separate top/bottom windows or popup windows simultaneously. e.g continue to view you tube while you are doing a whatsapp chat.

Secure Folder - it is like a second login environment. It has a separate copy of system settings. You can install second copy of your app here and it runs in its own seperate data space. e.g. you can concurrently run 2 copies of whatsapp (one for work number and the personal number) and get notify at the same time. Or setup another Exchange account to sync work email which is only viewable in secure folder.

Game launcher - a separate environment to launch games. You can set sound, notify on/off, no accidental touches, boost performance etc

Advanced Camera software - Built-in AI to detect different scenes. Pro mode. Simultaneous front/back camera photo/video taking

Set default app - you can set your own app to be default app to open different kind of files/data. Or change the soft keyboard.

Shortcut - create shortcuts to anything: one touch direct dial/sms, directly open battery usage in Settings, open specific screen of an app directly etc. Place shortcuts anywhere - in homescreen, notification, side panel etc.

Home/Launcher - fully customizable with themes, widgets, icon packs and live wallpapers - no more boring grid of icons. You can also use other launchers as well. Personalize your UI anyway you like.

Smart Lock - auto unlock when phone is connected to certain pre-specified locations (incl BT/Wifi/geo locations)

Side panels - customizable with many useful add-on panels as well. Includes functionality to clip your screen or create GIF from screen.

Play/App Store: Many app stores to choose from. You can also side-load apps giving you more flexibilities and cost benefits.

Other Niceties - (1) record phone calls. (2) smart stay to keep screen on while you are looking at it. (3) answer call by pressing volume key (4) end call with power key (5) reduce UI size for one handed use (6) take continuous screen shot (7) flip phone over to mute call (8) quickly launch camera by double press power button 9) gesture-based navigation with One-Hand-Operation+

Automation

There are unlimited possibilities with Android multi-tasking capability. You can setup tasks which the phone can do automatically for you. This opens up quite a lot of use cases NOT possible with Iphone. Some examples you can have running in your phone.

- auto set ring/network profile depending on situations (at home/work/outdoors)
- redirect important calls to another phone when you are engaged (without using operator services).
- start call recording when calls from certain persons.
- auto change wallpaper based on events or periodically.
- mute/unmute ring based on calendar meetings.
- timed ring profile.
- tap on NFC sticker - initiated certain tasks.
- auto send canned SMS to birthday
- pull files from certain ftp/http locations to phone periodically or when certain parameters changed
- selective sync from cloud storage to local folders
- auto start/close apps when certain app is started.
- start music app when headphone is plug in
- start certain app(s) on phone remotely or using a SMS.
- set screen to landscape when certain apps are launched.
- auto read out received text/whatsapp under certain preset conditions like driving/phone turned over/etc
- and MANY MANY MORE.
