I've had nothing but good experiences buying apple refurbs.

I do have to add that the Belgian Apple store only offers iPads, iPods and accessories. No Macs or iPhones.

But the Airport and iPads I got through refurb were cheaper and came with the same warranty.

If the refurb store has the model you want (you might have to wait a bit), I think it's a great deal.

Seriously, it is better for the environment and you get a high quality machine just like a brand new with extended warranty and cheaper.
If Apple offered refurbished iPhones I would get one too. Instead, I bought one on eBay in excellent condition with a three days use from the original owner.
The planet can't provide resources for infinite electronic devices and machines.
Plus why make the companies even richer than they already are by selling overpriced products just because they are brand new.

Why do you think people aren't buying refurbished? Machine availability changes all time in the refurb store, meaning people are in fact buying them. Some people prefer new machines and other want customized upgraded machines that aren't available there. I didn't purchase from the refurb store because I bought my MBP at launch so there weren't any available. All of this is assuming you live in a country that has a refurb store. Not everyone is so lucky to have such access, but we all do live in our own bubbles i suppose.

Because if no one bought new there would be no refurbished machines for you lot to buy.

I would have no problem at all if apple started selling only refurbished :)

On a serious note, We are creating big landfills of electronic waste and I am not talking about Apple which at least seems that is trying to be as green as possible, but generally speaking, I find the western consumerist habits rather problematic and really harmful to the environment.

Consumers demand new shiny electronics to be produced for eternity while not considering that we live on a planet with finite resources.

And the companies of course play along and seek infinite growth, again on a planet with finite resources....

You know where refurb machines come from yes?

They're new model machines that someone has had repairs on or otherwise returned. No new machines sold = no new ones to break = no new ones to be repaired...

In the last 3 years i have bought over 80 Macbook Airs refurbished (I'm the IT manager at work). Not a fault with any of them. I have unboxed and imaged them all, they all looked brand new apart from the box.

Any place but here or there....
I may consider iPads and maybe a Mac Mini refurbished, but any Apple computer over $1k, I'll buy new. I've had an equal share of good and bad iMac purchases new and refurbished. I'd rather risk with new. I bought an older close out model to replace my trusty and crusty 2010. I'm happy with it, 3 years younger than last machine. I'll see where I sit post uni.

This made me laugh. How can you sell only refurbished?

Haha Yeah, I know it was just a wishful thinking.
Maybe in a different kind of society, every electronic that is produced and brakes down or gets a design update would be recycled completely, and made with updatable components from the get go then given back to its owner without the need to produce all new machines and waste resources.

I find the western consumerist habits rather problematic and really harmful to the environment.
You know, everybody complains about "Western" consumer habits, but we get shopping tourists here from a lot of "Eastern" countries and their consumerism puts us to shame.

It's another version of "The Other". '"The Other" are better than us', '"The Other" are worse than us'. It's all nonsense, there is no "Other", we're the "Other".

People like "Stuff", and they really like "Shiny Stuff", or Apple would have gone away a long time ago. Once you put coins, or paper, or digital credit in people's pockets, and tell them they can have "Stuff", well, the possibilities are endless.

I'm sure a lot of people who claim they want to "Save the Planet", were lining up to buy Teslas recently, and justifying it with some Anti-Consumerism or Anti-Energy rant, but really, it's just the newest, shiniest "Stuff".

Humans like "Stuff", don't congratulate them because they live someplace that isn't geographically conducive to getting it. Every human on the planet, who can acquire a plane ticket, is less than a day away from a Costco, where their true nature will be revealed.

Just because I'm being critical of the western consumerism that doesn't mean that I consider non western countries "better". Our survival on this planet does not depend of what "we like" rather what's sustainable and ecological and our civilization is not sustainable for sure.

Tesla is the greatest thing that happened after the Internet. Sure it isn't 100% ecological and some of its materials are toxic and pollutant like the tyres but at least it is the step in the right direction. I'd rather have a world filled with Tesla cars rather than gas vehicles.

I buy refurbished products based on costs, both my SP2 and Lumia 1520 were refurbished.
To me a larger is that products are not easily upgradable and on issues like ram it almost makes items throw away.

Human survival is not sustainable on this planet, it's just a matter of time.

Seems Apple refurbished price is very close to bestbuys new price. $930 vs $999.
True, but it looks like there's only a couple 2015 models still available and then only if there's store stock near you. Just now I saw only a 1.1/256 gold for $999 and a 1.2/512 silver for $1299; neither in stock within 250 miles and no ability to have it shipped. There is a Geek Squad Certified openbox 1.2/512 silver for $1183 that can be shipped.

Personally, I'd take Apple refurbished over BestBuy leftovers even at the same price.

Why?
1- I never seen any refurb iPhone. Granted, I am not usually connected on Apple's site frantically refreshing waiting for one to appear, but it may also have to do with the fact most people still buy their from their cell phone provider in North America, unlike the rest of the world

2- Refurbished Macs don't offer a choice of keyboards layout in Canada. It is only US-layout, and I can't easily access diacritics because there's one key less than ISO-layout. And I make much more typos because of the shape of the Enter key. As I type a lot, this alone is a deal-breaker.

For me it really depends on my needs at the time of purchase. For example i broke my old nexus 5 around december and needed a new one asap. It didn't make sense for me to buy a new phone at full price when they have already been on the market for a couple of months so i went with a refurb.
My laptop on the other hand is a different story. I have had it for the best part of 6 yrs now and it is literally falling apart. I could just go get a refurb 2015 model but with the new macbook pro redesign coming in a couple months, I am just patient enough to wait for the new model but too impatient for there to be a refurb of the 2016 version.
