That can’t be true. I believe what you mean to say is you have no cameras that can produce RAW files. All cameras shoot in “raw” in the sense that the sensor receives all sorts of information - far more than is rendered into the final file output. A camera that saves only Jpeg files is making a decision as to how to process that information and render the final image. In particular, cheap cameras (the kind that can only save jpeg), typically make all sorts of artificial decisions, picking a color palette, smoothing out chroma noise, deciding on a white balance point, etc.
Cheap camera? Cheap camera???? My Powershot cost me $500!!!!

got my last DSLR via a well regarded second hand web site. Low shutter count, sweet deal at the time. Mint as well.

If you paid $500 for a camera that can not produce RAW files, you may have not made a good purchasing decision.

That said, $500 is “cheap” as far as cameras go. Mainstream DSLRs can cost several thousand dollars (some much more).
Way too much for a camera.

You are the one who came up with the $500 limit.

We are free to spend as much of our own money on a camera or anything else that we want.

If I had only $500 for a camera, I'd have made a very different decision than Mr. Powershot.....for instance the $429 Canon Rebel dSLR kit in the camera review I posted above seems like a veritable bargain.

My cheapest lens cost $800 and my most expensive lens costs $1400. Everyone's needs are different. Not everyone needs a camera to shoot RAW, not everyone needs interchangeable lens, I totally get that. But some people do want or need that for their hobby, their art or their professions or they just want to for whatever reasons may be. Personally, I can manage most the shots and videos that I take on an iPhone if I had to get rid of all my gear but I take photos and videos with different gear because I enjoy it and it's a good learning experience being in control of the photos I take.

So, for you to say what's way too much for a camera and post another thread on what camera gear people are buying is a bit... absurd.

if you want to get a good point and shoot, lots of good deals on Sony RX100 V or the other Sony RX100 models in the used market, and those cameras can shoot RAW and take great 4K video on top of that.

LOL... I had a long response on my reasons for editing... but erased it all. I've said my reasons in the I hate photoshop thread... so I have nothing new to add. I don't FB... but I'll just admit that I'm a Photoshop abuser and a liar... and if it gives me a few $$$ here and there... I'll keep working on my editing skills and be the best damn liar I can be. :p

Suit yourself. It’s a shrinking market and big improvements in image quality are usually to be observed at the high end. Enthusiast and pro gear never comes cheap. At least not when new.
Right. Its a shrinking market because everyone uses phones these days. Tell me about it.

Just explaining where the prices come from. The point and shoot market is basically gone and anything better won’t be cheap.

Phones can be and are great cameras and can these days produce raw images. Go figure. They typically cost more than your $500.00 limit though. Even your iPhone 12 / 128G cost more. But really, your cost concerns and whether your camera can deliver raw images aren't really central to the theme of this thread, which is why do we edit images, and there are a lot of great answers here. It's not clear whether you've read or care about any of these answers though. Do any of them makes sense? Do any of them strike a chord? I've seen very few images that couldn't do with a few tweaks, and even you have said you alter the SOOC JPEGs by cropping or other light edits. So you do it too. Why do you do it?

This guy is an enigma. He constantly poo poos on phones for not being true cameras while at the same time saying he can’t afford a real camera while at the same time saying Mr Powershot is a real camera while at the same time saying he doesn’t know how to use it while at the same time saying he’s trying to learn with the manual while at the same time saying he doesn’t have time for this or money for that. My head is spinning.

Also I hate the photoshop liars.

Yes I know that. Do I like it? Not really.
1. Thinks cameras over $500 are too expensive
2. Doesn't want to learn to edit photos (or shoot in manual mode)
3. Resents smartphones in the camera segment
4. Thinks Mr. Powershot can do it all

Have I covered all the high points? I'm really wondering why you participate in this forum. You have shown very little interest in actual photography.
