For advanced android users, Nexus is only phone to own because its based on pure Android stock, you can root etc...
But i think Nexus range product are overrated, only personal opinions though
I give some reasons explaining why there are better alternatives to Nexus

- You does not need to root to fully use Android.

- Rooting targets advanced users, moreover rooting seems to be way more complex than jailbreak
Rooting requires some computer and mobile knowledge!

- Nexus 5 is great value money but has average specs (we dont care specs but photo/camera hardware is crap)

- Nexus does not have micro SD slot like iPhone

- When you see for the first time Nexus pure Android interface, its unbelievable lifeless, Sony, HTC, Xiaomi, LG, even Samsung, they all bring on table something new in the interface

- It misses a lack of features and functionality, Sony has Stamina mode, Samsung many, many cool features, HTC, Blink field...
Pure Android interface hasn't any of them, its blank of anything, not really ready to use.
Android novices might be disturbed especially if they come from iOS.

- Nexus doesn't have premium design unlike Sony, HTC, Xiaomi...
Even Samsung with Galaxy Alpha.
If premium design was your concern, go on your way, Nexus is not for you.

- While its own Android concurrence implemented very impressive battery life on their phones, Nexus always has poor battery life, average, barely better than an iPhone.
If you want more battery life that would last over 1 day of use, you might take a look toward Galaxy Note 2/3/4, Xperia Z2/Z3, LG G2/G3, HTC M8, they all have extremely good battery life.

- You have only tight budget and cant afford expensive smartphones?
For Nexus 5 price you could get Sony Xperia Z2/ LG G3/ Xiaomi Mi4/ 1+1
All these smartphones are within Nexus price range.
They are more specced, more premium design, more features (waterproof for Sony, 2K display for LG etc...)

- Nexus price never drops unlike all other Android phones which price decreases constantly during their lifetime product

Edit: i forgot ''s'' to phone in title thread, sorry moderator, if you could correct it

The iPhone doesn't have SD card support either. Huh? Nexus 5 was a top tier phone, except maybe the camera and battery life. With Android, it really doesn't matter how things look out of the box. You can change pretty much anything with it, including the icons, the launchers, the theming, etc. Then with Tasker and various apps, you can clone many features of other OEMs (well except for waterproofing of course).

Everyone sees beauty differently (and that's the beauty of us humans, isn't it??); I think the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 are darn good looking phones. The nexus 6 isn't bad either.

The big advantage of the Nexus line is that you will get updates first. Some of the other phones may not even see a newer version of Android ever.

Good points. While I prefer stock Android just because its the cleanest, I have to say I'm not liking some things in Lollipop like the extreme use of blinding white, removing features etc.

And the Nexus 6 release has been botched beyond belief and the phone is certainly not without faults.

Sure you are, just a different launcher. Touchwiz + nova = touchwiz. Stock lollipop + nova = stock lollipop. Stock android just means there's no OEM skin over android. The setting panel will be stock even with nova launcher and there won't be any of the useless touchwiz features.

- You does not need to root to fully use Android.
Can't even tell what point you are trying to make here?

- Rooting targets advanced users, moreover rooting seems to be way more complex than jailbreak
Rooting requires some computer and mobile knowledge!
Rooting targets 'advanced users', yet jail breaking does not? You must still be using an iPhone 3GS and logging into that old website jailbreakme.com to think this.
Additionally, you don't know the difference between rooting and adding a ROM. On top of this, there are programs like Wugfresh that will root an Android phone super easy.

- Nexus 5 is great value money but has average specs (we dont care specs but photo/camera hardware is crap)
Maybe you want to compare an iPhone 5S to brand new flagship Android phones as well? Iphone 5S had mediocre specs when it was released and even more so now. AND it isn't even good value for money.

- Nexus does not have micro SD slot like iPhone
Wow, when did the iPhone get a micro sd slot? Wish my iPhone 6 had one. /s

- When you see for the first time Nexus pure Android interface, its unbelievable lifeless, Sony, HTC, Xiaomi, LG, even Samsung, they all bring on table something new in the interface
There is little difference between the UI. They all have app icons and widgets. All can look lifeless or completely animated. The user can customize the look of any of these. Your point is worthless.

- It misses a lack of features and functionality, Sony has Stamina mode, Samsung many, many cool features, HTC, Blink field...
Pure Android interface hasn't any of them, its blank of anything, not really ready to use.

I need a palm face emoticon inserted here.
In fact, not even gonna bother wasting any more of my time.

Its not pure imo if it has an add on like that

I think the general consensus on what is stock Android is related to the underlying framework with no built in OEM skin. A launcher only affects how something looks and how icons interact. A skin goes deeper, changing the settings and other things under the hood. You can't get rid of a skin (unless you use a different rom), but you CAN get rid of a launcher easily.

I wouldn't equate a launcher to an oem skin. IMO

I prefer stock because I get to build the experience with chosen apps without the oem frameworks

This^. It's like having the foundation set for you and you get to build the house on top exactly as you see fit.

OP is right. I love the SD card slot on iPhones...............

I think he meant that the Nexus doesn't have an SD card, same as the iPhone not having an SD card, just didn't articulate it clearly.

Might be, but since he's talking about how the nexus is overrated, I think he's pointing negatives, like not having SD while the iPhone "does".

Gonna go full nerd here for a minute.

I've always felt that the term "skin" doesn't accurately represent Android ROMs. When I see the word skin, it makes me think "top layer" -- and although each manufacturer's ROM is aesthetically different, the differences in functionality go much deeper than that. I prefer to think of it as [insert developer/OEM's name here]'s Android (e.g. Google's Android, Samsung's Android, Cyanogenmod, etc), not unlike the many Linux distributions. Thus, to go along with the post above, applying Nova launcher to Google's ROM doesn't change the fact that you are using Google's ROM.

Not saying any of you are wrong for using the term; I just think it can lead to confusion as above.

 I dont understand this comment. The Google launcher imo isnt very good so who cares if you have to download Nova. I dont know why some have an issue with downloading an app that makes the phone better. Everything else is pure Android. But if i dont care for something in pure Android, i change it to something i do like.

That line is awkwardly worded, but I think he meant to say "Nexus does not have micro SD slot, like the iPhone". Or perhaps it could have been worded as "Like the iPhone, the Nexus does not have a micro-SD slot."

What a world of difference a comma makes. :p

Folks…...........

You should all read a thread opening post a couple of times and you would realise he was saying re: microsd - that the Nexus was 'like' an iPhone in that regard.

Just strange use of grammar - he meant/should have used - not 'unlike' the iPhone.

However its easier to just read something couple of times than go to town and be a grammar Nazi ;) or jump to conclusions about the post and get it wrong :p (the majority)....
