comparing a fully mature final x.y.z version of an ios vs one thats not even out of beta yet for it's x.y version.?

excellent..

usually the case, but last year there were videos showing early betas of 10 being as good or better than final versions of 9 in regards to speed performance

Even my 7 Plus was slow as hell on the first beta. This is why it's called "beta software". Threads like this are completely useless. Wait till the official release before judging.

It'd be different, but iOS has a very long history (since the iPhone 3G on iOS4 at least ) of performing horribly and being less optimized for devices as they age. I have the feeling it's part new features, part Apple putting iOS versions on phones that shouldn't get them to brag about update support, and part wanting to push users to upgrade.

Leaving beta probably won't change that as much as it would an iP7+ or something. And I think 1GB RAM is hurting the older devices like the 5S/6/Air on these newer iOS versions.

Two words: planned obsolescence

This has been going on since the iPhone 3G. People say "new APIs" or new features or whatever garbage excuse they allow Apple to have.

The fact is my Windows 10 PC runs as well, if not better, than when I bought it with Windows 7. Windows 10 has tons of new features, a new look, and maintains the same responsiveness on older hardware. The difference is that Microsoft cares more about its software sales, a lesson learned with Vista's bloat. Microsoft keeps things lean and fast to sell you its latest and greatest.

Apple no longer sells their OS. They sell hardware. They want you to keep buying their hardware. Anyone who believes otherwise is deft, and trust me, there are plenty of you out there.

Next year the same thread will be created for the 6, then 6s, then 7....etc. Even the unreleased iPhone X will suffer this fate. But I know everyone here will lose their minds when Apple shows off the iPhone X benchmarks....only to turn it into a turd in 4 years because of "new API's". Comedy, I tell you, comedy.

True that.

But there’s another important point to note.

Older Apple hardware was indeed very slow and hardware starved. However, existing A9 and up devices that have 2GB RAM are pretty good. So if they meet that fate any time soon, it is indeed planned obsolescence. I could understand an A7 with 1GB RAM becoming slow in 2 yrs. But what Windows has taught us, an A9 + 2GB RAM should last 2-3x as long as that. Unless Apple plays dirty. And an A10 with 4GB RAM should last a very long time until Apple plays dirty. This is going by Windows hardware where a first gen Core i5 + 4GB RAM (almost 10 yr old hardware) is still suitable for most common people.

If I was to leave my devices ( 6s and air 2) on 10.3.3, they'd probably last me until the hardware failed, just like my desktop computers. I have a core2duo and a first gen I7 running good as new if not better on Windows 10. Key is proper amount of RAM.

Then you got the naysayers using scare tactics like 10.3.3 not getting any more security fixes. Not like you read about many security exploits with iOS to being with. After all, what will happen to those still using a perfectly good iPad 4, iPhone 5, etc that can't get 11.

Ya. People sprouting rubbish about security issues don’t have a clue about tech.

I saw many videos showing an IPhone 5S running iOS 11... Man , it's so slow and laggy .... IOS 10 is way better on IPhone 5s than iOS 11.
This is why Apple should stop with the betas, or at least restrict them to fewer people. It seems everybody can participate and every single version x and x.x and x.x.x release has between 4 and 7 betas.

In all fairness, you can't judge any device running iOS 11 until they've cleaned up the code fetching bugs and crashes and logs.

Beta 4 runs pretty nice on the 5s

Even the 7 was a lag fest with beta 1.

People shouldn't be using these as daily drivers....if you are you're probably not who the non-public beta was intended for (developers)

Well said

Though the public betas do serve a good purpose as long as they are used as intended. Apple collects a lot of bug reports from general beta testing public with these

The problem is people using betas as daily driver material which is their prerogative but should understand they will get issues

The iPhone 5s is the oldest device supported by iOS 11 and iOS 11 will be the last firmware on the iPhone 5s, so it will be slower. Also yes, it's a beta in the videos so expect it to be really slow and buggy.

I think you're right champ.

There was an exponential increase in CPU and GPU speed increases during the early years of Ax releases.

Any iOS device with 2GB of ram should get a decent run from here on (you would think).

I remember installing iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G and it just brought the device to a screaming halt. lol. The good old days...

It’s not the final release. It’s the initial release and you know as well as I do that these bugs will be ironed out in the days, weeks and months ahead.

In the case of my iPhone 6, it never did regain the speed it had on iOS 8 so i doubt it. I bought my 7 Plus when 10.0 was around and it was running stellar.

The reality is Apple just doesn’t optimise iOS for older devices.

In any case I won’t be able to find out whether Apple fixed it or not because I will be on an iPhone X by that time.

Every hardware release is doubling speed annually and the OS is primarily targeted at those. By the middle of the iOS 10 cycle all hardware that ran it, ran it smoothly. As quickly as the OS it was released with years earlier? Nope, absolutely not.

It’s not comparable to PC or Mac because Intel’s progress petered out to the point of minimal gains, six or more years ago.

If the final build of iOS 11 makes the 5s slow wait and see how 11.1 or 11.2 does. That being said I think it is well known that iOS 11 was not going to make a 5s faster. At best the hope would be it stays the same as iOS 10. I always assume anything after the first initial iOS upgrade on any iPhone will slow it down. Now the SE seems to be the same to me on iOS 11 even though it initially was on iOS 9. I think the 2gb's of RAM has a lot to do with that.

...well you see that it wasnt really until A8 when the phone gpu got serious horse power. The iPhone 5s gpu is ancient compared to the new ones found in A9+ devices.
I think from A9 (iPhone 6S and 6S Plus) onwards, Apple’s devices started getting serious GPU power. A8 was utter trash or slightly optimised A7. Have you forgotten A8 based iPhone 6 Plus? That device was the worst when it came to UI performance. It’s GPU was simply incapable of handling iOS transparency effects and Full HD resolution.

It would be hard for Apple to make A10/A11 obsolete when they are achieving Intel Core i3/i5 performance levels.
... But knowing Apple, they might introduce 3 transparency layers on top of one another to cripple these devices.

I think the latest beta runs well on the 5s and 6. Haven't tried any other devices but those two feel completely different than the first beta, which is to be expected.

Imo those with a 5s or 6 should have a similar experience to iOS 10, which is a well performing OS that is perfectly useable.

I am especially impressed with the 5s right now...this thing came out at the end of 2013 lol

iOS 9 is the best iOS for the iPhone 6, My sister said it. iOS 10 is reasonable speed, while iOS 11 made it worst just like iOS 10 in iPhone 5.

So in the end of the day, iOS 12 is probably the final update for iPhone 6.
