usually the case, but last year there were videos showing early betas of 10 being as good or better than final versions of 9 in regards to speed performance
Probably because they barely did anything with 10 so had time to polish it up somewhat before the betas vs iOS 11 having to develop all the new iPad features, a custom version for the new iPhone and the standard versions for the existing/ new LCD iPhones?

Honestly the latest beta has been running decently on my 5s, the only big issue is the notes app which is basically unusable (crashes and freezes at every single step). I was told it might be due to old hardware, but it seems to me sloppy programming.

It's fine ! Sure it's a bit worse than iOS 10 (let's say 5-10% slower) but that was to be expected and hopefully it will get fixed in the next months. The 5s is a four years old phone so I have no complaints. I'll just hold on to it for one more year and I'll upgrade next year to iPhone Xs or whatever Apple has in store.

Its perfectly fine on my daughter's iPhones. Does everyone close down the apps prior to upgrade? We do, and it's worked so far?

Face it. The CPU+GPU combination is a bit weak to run iOS11 at full throttle. iPhone SE is available at bargain prices. If you can upgrade, it’s got powerful internals and runs butter smooth on iOS 11. I sold my 5S for $120 and purchased SE for $200 (32GB Used)

Because iOS 11 is the latest iOS that iPhone 5s will get...but also it is in beta stage so this may be also an explanation...
For example...my iPhone 4( non S) struggled with iOS 7 but had no problem with iOS 6...
TrueLaLey Sister So True, and agree with you iPhone 4S is still fast until iOS 6, while iOS 7 suddenly reduces it's performance. Both 4/4S are easy to drain battery on iOS 7 in anyways because of ancient hardware.

iOS 5 on 4S is 10/10
iOS 6 on 4S is 9/10
iOS 7 on 4S is 5/10
iOS 8 on 4S is 2/10
iOS 9 on 4S is 1/10

While the 5S is 2/10 on iOS 11 it's still better than 4S in some areas, due to being 64 bit. Its like 2 times better on its LAST OS supported.

I liked ios6 on the 4s. Agree 11 is better on the 5s as a comparison.

5s may get ios12, it has 1gb of ram, just like the iPhone 6.

But also 5s is like 2 times faster than 4s on iOS 9 but 5S is about 5 times slower on iOS 11 than iPhone 5 on iOS 10... 5 on iOS 10 still fast but did not get iOS 11... but 5s also lot worst than 5 on iOS 10. Most likely it wont get iOS 12 because of slow like turtle... sometimes 64 bit on 5s does not matter even if its still clocked at 1.3Ghz, just like the iPhone 5. Still no nfc, barometer, volte or etc.. not power effiecient like later models..

Well iOS 12 is like a miracle to run on 5s

11.2 still slower compared to 10 on 5s but slightly improved over 11.0.

I think you’re right. The 5s won’t get iOS 12. Sniff.
