Black 5 vs. Space Gray 5s

I'm not a huge fan of the space grey, but its not terrible. The slate was very nice and very stealthy looking but personally I would have preferred something with less of a blue tone to it. I supposed Apple addressed that with "Space Grey" but it would have been nicer if the grey they used was closer to black.

I don’t think this is true..

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t really care. I just don’t get the point of pining for a slightly different shade of black...
Indeed... After double checking Mactracker and Google it seems it was either just 'black" or "slate". Perhaps "slateblack".

I wonder if the "Space black" came up as a colloquial name or something of that nature?...

one of the pamphelets i saw several google pages in said space black so its possible it was photoshopped or maybe used in a international translation? i thought i saw it when i got my 5 somewhere being canadian i wonder if maybe the french part of the documents etc.

i guess we will never know

That could certainly be...
indeed we may never know

further searching has shown me apple 100% for sure used the color "Space Black" in the the black stainless steel apple watch and it is darker than space grey aluminum so we are at worse only half crazy

The SG is pretty dark however when compared to the JetBlack it def doesn't look as dark.

Let's face it...the "silver" iPhone X is basically white. It puzzles me as to why Apple would only release a "silver" and space gray version of the iPhone X, when they could have easily done black as well with the glass back since it has been done before.

Especially considering there were rumors that a gold iPhone X was supposed to be released alongside the other 2 colors, but it was scrapped because of production issues. Really? They were working on a gold but no black?

Anyone else find this odd?

Why not green, purple, red white and blue and transparent colors?

We need to send Apple some suggestion for new 'greyish' colour names.

-Blacky Grey
-Darky Grey
-Dark Grey (not to be confused with Darky Grey)
-Midnight Grey
-Mature Grey
-Blackhole Grey

This would be nice, multi-colored leds which change to a different hue when a button or on screen icon is pressed.

I know why...

So the next iPhone X will have more colors. Will sell easier.

The upgrade of the current iPhone X and second gen X wont be huge. The only appereance they can sell is more colors.

I can bet all my money that the second gen X will include the following:

-Better specs then the current X
-More colors!
-Smaller notch
-Includes fast charger

They release a second gen X with only hardware upgrades. That wont sell very well.

We always fall for appereance.

Same tactic has been used for the iPhone 7. Its almost the same as iPhone 6 but the colors made people buy it! Appereance upgrades sell faster then hardware.

Apple is never been about vibrant, fluorescent colors throughout their lineup. If you look traditionally at all their product line history, they are usually more neutral with their color Choices with silver, gray, gold, etc.

The black iPhone 5 was officially named "space black" by Apple
I don't recall that at all.

I remember it being labeled as Black/Slate, because technically the metal on the back is actually a dark gray, whereas the sides and the glass windows on the back are actually black.

I own a Black/Slate iPhone 5 and have since launch day in 2012.

iMacs iPod mini & nano's may disagree with you

That said I doubt those color schemes will come back soon
my guess we'll get another decade at least of solid metal Machines, then maybe once the entire industry is copying them and that's the new "biege box" they may go back to color to differentiate

Since much of the industry is already copying them we're on our way

That’s true, they did have those vibrant colors offered, but if you look at the iPhone, current MacBook line an iMac, they don’t come in vibrant colors. They’re usually more neutral based or toned down, sometimes I think it’s for the professional environment if you will. Otherwise the only other real standout color would be the Product Red.

Except the iMacs.

Not odd! I find completely black iPhones are very depressing because there is no color. Besides what difference does it make what color it is if it’s in a case? I realize that some of you if not many of you do not like cases, but if you did not purchase AppleCare with your iPhone X, you’ll be shelling out $550 to replace it if and when it breaks., Because you chose not to put it in a case... i’m definitely not carrying my new iPhone X without a case because of the money I spent on this thing, I sure as heck am not going to risk breaking it...

LOL, how did I turn this into a case conversation when we’re talking about color of the iPhone? I guess I did because of the way I carry mine in a case, can’t really tell what color the back is so I guess that’s where that came from...

The x is so slippery without a case, I can’t see how any of you go without one.

IME black iPhones seem to get hotter, especially in Delhi where the avg temperature in summers is 40-45+ degrees C.

I've said it before but I'd happily pay a premium for the same DLC I have on my black Apple Watches.

Immune to scratches and looks fantastic.

looking up colors online is misleading. go look at it at a store. Its grey yes but its basically black its not light in color. I think it looks nice but I liked the white back with black front more this year

Very true. The diamond like carbon coating is excellent on the stainless black Apple Watch. The only thing that comes somewhat close to it is the is the physical vapor deposition coating on the bands on the space gray iPhone X, but doesn’t nearly have the protection at DLC does.
