Indeed... After double checking Mactracker and Google it seems it was either just 'black" or "slate". Perhaps "slateblack".

I wonder if the "Space black" came up as a colloquial name or something of that nature?...
I used the Wayback Machine website to check from an October 2012 snapshot of the official Apple.com website and I can confirm it was called « Black & Slate ».

Not odd! I find completely black iPhones are very depressing because there is no color. Besides what difference does it make what color it is if it’s in a case? I realize that some of you if not many of you do not like cases, but if you did not purchase AppleCare with your iPhone X, you’ll be shelling out $550 to replace it if and when it breaks., Because you chose not to put it in a case... i’m definitely not carrying my new iPhone X without a case because of the money I spent on this thing, I sure as heck am not going to risk breaking it...

LOL, how did I turn this into a case conversation when we’re talking about color of the iPhone? I guess I did because of the way I carry mine in a case, can’t really tell what color the back is so I guess that’s where that came from...

The x is so slippery without a case, I can’t see how any of you go without one.

There are transparent (could be made) cases which would let the colors show.

Never understood the rose gold color but apparently it is a big in china from what I gather here in the forums.
I love the rose gold color and was so sad when the X wasn't in it. But like it has been said I had no choice with it being all glass to get a case, which trust me is pink

Apple is never been about vibrant, fluorescent colors throughout their lineup. If you look traditionally at all their product line history, they are usually more neutral with their color Choices with silver, gray, gold, etc.
Except 5C had bright colors, I still have my lime green one

Apple has never had much luck with the Black color as the anodizing process failed to keep the color on without chipping. We’ve seen this in a previous model
Maybe they’ll get it right in 2018

Yeah, but that was with the aluminum body style/design. I don't recall production of black ever being an issue on the iPhone 4/4S models, which were glass, just like the X.
