It’s not all that complicated. People just want things regardless of whether it’s logical or not. Also I’m not sure why people mention people having cash lol. You’d be surprised how many people can’t afford what they’re buying and just finance it. Credit cards let you get whatever you want if you have the credit limit for it. Now whether or not they’re making a financially sensible decision is another question.
I am pretty poor but T-Mobile thinks I’m worthy. I could never afford to pay outright because I have to pay for groceries. I upgraded on their Jump benefit and paid $90 up front, the rest of the installments will replace my 14PM installments on my bill. I’ll upgrade the same way next year. As for my new MBA, my stepmom took some money out after my dad died last year and she bought me the computer because my MBP was 10 years old. I’ve just been extremely lucky. In no way would I ever be able to part with $1200 for anything let alone a phone.

On top of that, buying at launch means enjoying the phone for the longest time possible.
Agreed. You get the most "value" out of the phone/computer/game console/etc. if you buy it on launch day. If it doesn't turn up on the exact day then it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but it's still a disappointment if you're looking forward to it.

Most people responding are doing it because they really wanted the phone and it made them happy. I'm not in that camp.

I really hate ordering new phones. Everything about upgrading feels like work to me and it's not fun. No, I don't enjoy unboxing it. When I turn on my new phone, my first thought is "I hope none of my data gets lost."

Something will break because something always breaks. I normally drag my feet, but this time I ordered it almost on launch day to get it over with.

Why? I was thinking of upgrading a year ago, but procrastinated too long and by the time I was ready to do it, it was perpetually out of stock. By the time they were in good supply, it'd be only another 8 months to the 15 release so I decided to hold off and be ready when that dropped.

There's a very practical answer... If you are going to upgrade to the latest phone anyway, and you get it at launch day, you have the latest tech for 1 full year... If you get it 6 months into the product, you have the latest product for 6 months, and then you have the last generation.

The last generation product is worth less than the current generation product... Part of what you are paying the premium for is to have the latest technology before others do...

If you were going to buy it 6 months after launch anyway, you might as well buy it used on eBay 1 year after launch when others are upgrading and save a bunch of money... And as you get closer to the next launch date, there is no point in paying full price when it's going to be outdated in only a few months...

I have an iPhone X and was already pondering a new phone last year, but because I procrastinated, it was perpetually 4-6 weeks out from being back in stock. By the time they were in good supply, it'd be only another 8 months to the 15 release so I decided to hold off and be ready when that dropped.
Since you got an X they have really streamlined the transfer process. It takes like 15 minutes and you’re good to go, most apps are even still signed in on the other side.

Because we’re real  fanatics. And because we can. It would be so weird not to upgrade every year - we buy them outright and sell the previous ones… but like someone said above - our families, our kids, our friends - they all know we celebrate new iphone day!

It’s just fun. It makes the good brain chemicals do the good things for me.

In my 20s I would camp out for concerts from sometimes before 8am onwards just to be up front on the barrier. Same excitement vibe for me.

I’ll be honest, I’m 37, and from about age 4 on I was severely depressed. I found joy in very little. At 35 I started ketamine therapy (Spravato) and my depression has been in complete remission since then. Let me tell you, I find SO MUCH JOY in things now. I get so excited. I love it. And I love new shiny toys, which is what this phone is, so I dove right in and haven’t looked back. I can enjoy life now, for the first time, so I’m going to do it however I can. And I’m here to share that excitement with others who also find joy in it.

I’ve had iPhones since literally day 2 of the 2g and I get so excited about new releases. My phone is my life because it lets me capture moments with my kids who are getting older every day.
Great to hear. Ketamine is a wonderful medication for a variety of purposes, but especially depression. I know it’s a little off topic but we can actually observe new neural connections within 1-2 mins post ketamine injections. Pretty cool stuff and congrats again on making progress, and the new iPhone 🙌👍

Oh yeah. The migration process is definitely much smoother in recent years, but I have enough weird stuff that something still goes wrong usually. Until I’m absolutely 100% confident I can trust my phone not to let me down when I need it, I'll be a bit apprehensive.

It's only after a few weeks of ironing out any kinks that I start enjoying my new device... and then I don't want anything else for as long as possible.

Almost every year, there are hundreds of threads (big And small ones) discussing launch day iPhone purchase, from availability, to sharing experience, tracking, to walk-in purchase or local store pickup.

During the iPhone early years, I can get it on why people pile up for the latest and greatest because of major leap every year. But nowadays especially in last 3 years, iPhone has been in incremental update with few if any “wow” factors.

This gets me wondering: why so many people still try to get their iPhone on launch day with any means necessary? Is the launch day iPhone super special compared to non-launch day one? I am both curious and puzzled. 🤔
Now you have me curious. What were the major leaps that enticed you to upgrade every year with the early iPhones?

We reached 'peak phone' years ago. This is industry wide. It'll take a major paradigm shift before we see any revolutionary shifts like we saw in the early days of the smart phones. Until then, changes will be incremental and evolutionary, rather than revolutionary.

That said, these are devices that many of us depend on daily and use heavily, non-stop. For me, even the incremental changes are something I'd like to get in my palm from day one. Clearly, I'm not alone. Just as clearly, this will only be of value to some people, and that's ok.

For those that aren't as excited about the latest and greatest as the rest of us, I dig it. But, for me and millions of others, it's like Christmas in September :)

iPhone day is just a special day for me..I know it’s silly. And very fan boyish, but it is a mac forum.. 1. It’s a streak that I’ve had every year. Day 1 from day 1! I’ve had the pleasure to camp out in Jersey, Orlando, NYC, Memphis, Dallas, Vegas… I honestly just miss the days of camping out, getting mad at mall security. The free chick fil a from Apple. Even the, I’m in line but I have no idea what ima get cuz we have no idea what color and storage may be available.. Ive personally grown up with the iPhone from the age of 15… From the first white back, to the first white front, to the rose Gold, the jet black, the iPhone X, the xs Max, touch id, Siri.. the list goes on and on. Yes, it’s not like that anymore. It’s just a special day. And that’s all I can say. I know the iPhone 15 pro isn’t that great of an upgrade over the 14 pro.. but neither was several others.
That's impressive, actually. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Not special at all. But just because the fun wore out for you doesn’t mean it wore out for everybody else. At least no long lines and people stepping on each other and camping out for weeks. With online orders and pickup/delivery it’s much better! Is it necessary??? Of course not! I can name you millions of things that aren’t necessary. People can enjoy whatever brings them happiness. I just think Apple saying they are “sold out” and have the artificial delays on shipping and magically making them available is hilarious and that is unnecessary. Btw, I’ve always been able to buy a brand new iPhone on launch day in store with no preorder. I’m happy regardless if I have a new phone or not, but it’s free for me each year so that’s why I preorder.

I have never done the pre-order I just go on the first day of that the new phones are available in the cell company store and see what surprise is awaiting me.

I have got the following phones
3GS
5
7 this was a failed phone having issues for the entire year
8
11 Pro
12 Pro
14 Pro

This year I am going to do the same and because I want the latest new iPhone plus I am going to move up the 15 Pro Max. I do know that I am not going with the Titanium as I checked in the cell store today and it is on back order so I am going to go for either the black or the blue and then hop over to amazon after I get the new phone and order a case and screen protector. Since I am retired I want the latest tech and I can afford it why not, as I can't take the money with me and I want to be sure to spend the grandkids inheritance. :apple:😂

Meh I always upgrade when Apple boosts its a major upgrade to design and display.

I do not upgrade every year as i hate S models. I never believed in buying the same phone as the one i own, no matter how powerfully the specs are.

I find more excitement when Apple changes the design of the phone or makes the screen larger.

My iphone journey: 3G, 4, 5, 6, X, 12 pro max, 16 ultra!!! My upgrade cycle now is pretty much every 3 years since the 6.

I however feel ios is falling apart & the iphone announcements are becoming more boring as the years progress.

Yes it has been my miracle drug for sure. I still get it every other week and I expect it’ll be a lifelong thing for me which I’m fine with because it gives me a life to live. I do feel like it has rewired my brain almost completely after a lifetime of trauma and untreated mental illness. All that has still left me with a broken brain, but for once I can experience happiness and a will to live.

Yes, it is. No other day of the year has the same anticipation and hype, where those of us who're choosing to upgrade can get excited together, compare colour choices and discuss cases, etc.

On top of that, buying at launch means enjoying the phone for the longest time possible.
The last point really only valid for IUP program, which isn’t available everywhere else afaik.
First point seems fair.
When you trade in every year the price is cut in half. just saying
With currency fluctuations and whatnot, it is not always that cut and dry outside of US imo.

Because we want to.

It's not hard to grasp. We want the item, so we order it. It's like a million pother products were people line up exactly like this.

My goodness LOL

Btw, I don't see anyone particularly hysterical. So many other forums cain't make this claim.

In the before times, I got a new phone every year. Now, its every 3 years. Its much more exciting as its more of a jump. I'm going from a 12 non-pro to a 15 pro. That's going to be a good jump. Before that I went from an iPhone 7 -> 11 -> 12. Each of those was a change in design so they were different enough. I'm excited for the 3x Optical zoom. I haven't had Optical zoom since the 6s Plus. Or maybe it was my wife's 7 Plus. I don't remember....
