Slight difference between “personal choices” and western culture destroying the planet. Live and let I suppose, enjoy the hollow dopamine rush apple’s marketing psychologists have planned for you 🫡
Project much? I should be the last guy for this comment. As some one who upgrades iPhone every 6-7 years or Mac ever 6-8 years. Thanks for your concern about hollowness, with out any clue. I make different choices doesn’t mean I judge others. I am happy for people who enjoy life.

I don’t upgrade annually but I don’t begrudge people this. If Apple released an iPhone every year that excited me, I’d probably do the same. Unfortunately they killed the mini and arguably haven’t had interesting colors since the XR, and before that the 5c, so upgrades aren’t very tempting to me.

Almost every year, there are hundreds of threads (big And small ones) discussing launch day iPhone purchase, from availability, to sharing experience, tracking, to walk-in purchase or local store pickup.

During the iPhone early years, I can get it on why people pile up for the latest and greatest because of major leap every year. But nowadays especially in last 3 years, iPhone has been in incremental update with few if any “wow” factors.

This gets me wondering: why so many people still try to get their iPhone on launch day with any means necessary? Is the launch day iPhone super special compared to non-launch day one? I am both curious and puzzled. 🤔
This the perfect example of FOMO.

It certainly does make for an entertaining read every year. I'm surprised it didn't get made sooner. Either way, I've got my popcorn ready.
Like all the other discussions on this forum, it also makes for a great market research tool for Apple.

Like what the ratios are between the complainers who want more but will pay for less, the complainers who want more and won't pay for less, the non-fussy who will always just pay for the dopamine hit and whatever newbies Apple leaves them with when it wears off, and the sycophants who will defend discrepancies between value and price in order to fulfil their natural desire to remain part of "the club".

Knowing what the overall noise will be is what lets Apple know what they can get away with.

…and almost every year there are lots of threads, just like this one, questioning the decision of ordering a new phone (early).

People are all different - some like brand new ‘things’, some like questioning why.

And the world keeps turning 🌎

I suppose you’re writing this on an Intel 386 desktop with 4MB RAM from 1990 with a 9kbps modem. Good for you on sticking to your principles.

shows how devoid our culture is of true meaning and value

Sickening to think of the genuine joy and happiness decedent hyper consumerism brings to these people
And yet here you are, showing us how humans can be “meaningful” and “valuable” by… angrily posting on an apple enthusiasts forum.
Truly spending your precious time on this planet well I see.

Just remember, by making that comment, you literally contributed to climate change.
A small amount but if you’re going to judge others…

I don't think we should shoot the OP down for asking - it's a very valid question and carries weight, especially since these handsets have reached a peak where the upgrades seem quite minor year upon year.

I, for one, am no longer a 'launch day warrior'. Yes, I am fortunate enough to have disposable income, and yes I've decided to upgrade this year from my 13PM to the 15PM, but only because I hand iPhones down the family chain and they needed an upgrade more then I did (although I'm the main tech person in the house!). Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. Even so, I pre-ordered and my shipping date is a week after the launch day, and I'm not bothered at all. It'll arrive when it arrives! I'm certainly not going to bother ordering elsewhere, or hunting down stock in stores so that I get it on launch day!

I appreciate some find this exciting though, as did I many years ago! Maybe if I had more of a gap between upgrades I would be more excited - gives me more of that 'upgrade feeling'!

Because if you don't you probably have to wait 2 months before you can easily get it.

This is actually pretty close to the truth for me. My 12 mini's battery gives me about 2/3 of a day before I have to charge (the health is down to 83%), and I'd like a new phone sooner rather than later. Didn't need to be on the first day of availability, but I didn't want to wait until November either.

And if people want to have fun with it, I think it's great. :)

Human nature. In a nutshell.

The iPhone has always been an incremental update every year, except for maybe the first two years when it went from 2g to 3g and the price dropped. I’m sure most people who have bought since 2007 still basically use their phones for the same thing they have always used their phones for.

Most people responding are doing it because they really wanted the phone and it made them happy. I'm not in that camp.

I really hate ordering new phones. Everything about upgrading feels like work to me and it's not fun. No, I don't enjoy unboxing it. When I turn on my new phone, my first thought is "I hope none of my data gets lost."

Something will break because something always breaks. I normally drag my feet, but this time I ordered it almost on launch day to get it over with.

Why? I was thinking of upgrading a year ago, but procrastinated too long and by the time I was ready to do it, it was perpetually out of stock. By the time they were in good supply, it'd be only another 8 months to the 15 release so I decided to hold off and be ready when that dropped.
It doesn’t really make much since to not upgrade because of the trade in value you get for the old phone. You could also sell it and get even more money. However the 15 pro max may be my last iPhone for a while. With the usb-c port, 8gbs of Ram, 5x camera. Anything else they add will probably just be speed improvements.

Because need is not the real reason people buy stuff.

I don't update my phones every year. My current phone is 3 years old, works great and will be passed down to my kid. He is actually the one who needs a new phone, as his iphone 6 is acting out. I am personally getting my new phone as soon as possible, because we actually really need a phone for the kid. I just did not want to buy 14 when 15 was almost out.

I have never done the pre-order I just go on the first day of that the new phones are available in the cell company store and see what surprise is awaiting me.

I have got the following phones
3GS
5
7 this was a failed phone having issues for the entire year
8
11 Pro
12 Pro
14 Pro

This year I am going to do the same and because I want the latest new iPhone plus I am going to move up the 15 Pro Max. I do know that I am not going with the Titanium as I checked in the cell store today and it is on back order so I am going to go for either the black or the blue and then hop over to amazon after I get the new phone and order a case and screen protector. Since I am retired I want the latest tech and I can afford it why not, as I can't take the money with me and I want to be sure to spend the grandkids inheritance. :apple:😂
My 7 ran hot out of the box. I gave it a week thinking as Taylor Swift would say “it needs to calm down”. Took it into the Apple Store. As soon as I handed it to the guy he went in back and brought out a new one. I was impressed they had an emergency stock in the store for replacements. The new one ran great though.
