Is this a US thing? I am using an 8+ in Asia and I do not feel any more superior than my colleagues who are toting the latest Samsung phones in the very least. 😅

It certainly seems to be a US thing as far as Mac Rumours goes but I couldn’t say in general. It’s a long time since I have encountered anybody in the UK who has been openly elitist about owning an iPhone, but then that would be lost on most as iPhones are so popular across pretty much all demographics.
We have this problem here in Brazil as well. The iPhone is very expensive here (the basic regular one costs $1,600) and some people will incur into debt just to have one to show off.

To each their own. Because of the Fold2... I’m not going back to the iPhone. I enjoy using the Fold2 along with the software perks that come with OneUI.

From the multitasking aspects, customization, sound assistant feature and the screen real estate alone… keeps me attached to this device over the iPhone. Not trying to make it into a Android vs iPhone debate, everyone has their preferences. But I haven’t had any app crashes and my outside screen layout doesn’t change.
Do you have a dedicated camera? Or do you value the potable tablet and multitasking features over a better camera like that on the S21 ultra?

Unfortunately, a lot of people on this forum appear to attach self-worth to Apple purchases. There are also others here who enjoy being contrary because it gets a tech rise out of others.
Well summarized.

My step son who originally worked for Apple (sub contractor) and is now working for Samsung said he has many customers who are very biased on one platform or another.

Luckily, his knowledge of both platforms help him make sales and cross over platforms easily when he solves customers objections and issues.

No dedicated camera. And I understand the camera technology isn’t on par with the S21 Ultra, but it takes good quality photos. I take photos primarily with the Fold2 and I use Google Drive to transfer photos to iCloud Photos. But yes, I value the portable tablet aspect of the Fold2 over having a better camera.

Yep. Anyone in the U.K. can afford an iPhone. Even those who aren’t working and are on benefits.

Same thing in the US. Honestly, iPhones are just commonplace here. In my circle at least, people replace their phones when there's a problem with their old one. The ones who get the Pro Max do so because its large size is better for their aging eyes. They couldn't even tell you what year/model iPhone they have if asked. They'll just say it's the big iPhone.

Maybe it's a big deal for someone who's in high school or something but working adults? Median wage in the US is around $60,000 per year, iirc so if someone really wanted an iPhone, it's relatively affordable.

Absolutely. There’s people who have children in my daughters school who I know are unemployed and on benefits, but have iPhone 11/12Pro’s. They also wear £190 Nike Air Max trainers too and 25 year old cars and live in social housing. iPhones are easy to get on contract these days, which is why I always wonder why some online treat them as some kind of status symbol? It’s all about how someone chooses to spend their money at the end of the day..

I’m glad you’re not having that problem. My partner and I both had the Fold2 and the outside screen app drawer layout had a mind of its own. We’d spend time organizing it only to have it turn into a random mess the next day so often we both gave up.

the screen real estate is ok I guess. Facebook looks terrible on it. And most of the apps don’t actually do anything to take advantage of the inside display, and the outside display is so tall and narrow some things didn’t look right there either. But if it works for you, there’s no reason to change. I bought the fold 2, switched to iPhone, switched back to the fold 2 and still decided it wasn’t for me. It was a good device and I’ve really only said the few complaints I had about it. I also owned a Note 10 before that, but again, for me there are way too many compromises from a day to day usability aspect with android. Samsung definitely makes alluring devices but I just can’t stick with them like I can iPhone.

I will say that since owning the note 10 and fold 2, I don’t really get too deep in the Android vs iOS debates anymore. They both have their upsides and downsides, their strengths and weaknesses, it ultimately it’s totally user preference now. I probably said Android was total garbage 10 years ago but I think for the right people, it’s a very viable and good choice.

I truly do not understand the overtly classist and over the top comments on this site when the discussion is about the iPhone and Android phones. Some background about me so you can better understand why I have this question.

I have been using Apple products since around 1992. Up until 4 years ago, my wife and I had 2 MacPros, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone 5 and 6. I have owned every iPhone through 6 giving my wife my old one when I updated.

About 4 years ago I personally got fed up with the iPhone for many reasons. It is still a great phone, but I had other needs. I decided to give Android a try and purchased a used Samsung S7edge. I liked it, so, after about a year, I bought a new Note 8 which I am using to this day. My wife uses an iPhone 7 (we’ll be updating her soon).

Whenever a discussion about phones comes up, many of the responses are, stupid/cheap/poor/gullible/ any other pejorative, is used to describe anyone who uses an Android phone. I don’t get it. It’s a PHONE. Do people really get there self worth based on the phone they use. And then, to make it into a class issue, “you must be poor” thing really baffles me. I understand this is an Apple site, but the attitude is embarrassing to me as an Apple product user. I have been on this site for over 20 years and have watched the users get more and more like this. Does it really affect you what phone someone else uses?

The Note 8 I have has been fantastic. No slow down, and it works as well now as it did nearly 4 years ago when I bought it. I get monthly security updates (although it’s more like every other month).
The reverse is also true of people on the forum calling Apple users sheep/stupid/nerds/rich (even when they arent) etc… Android companies took out ads making fun of iPhone users. No one said a word about the bullying impact of it. Shouldnt be surprised when people throw it back to people using other products.

if youre an adult you ignore it and move on. if youre a child you let other people get to you.

You can choose to not devote so much energy to these elite attitudes within fanboi circles.

🤷🏾‍♂️

It‘s somewhat concerning actually. Our oldest and his wife are both Process Engineers in The Silicon Industry. They tell me not to expect this shortage to end any time soon. Their issues are the getting everything re-qualified along with bringing new tools online. Lead Times are literally Stroke Inducing right now.

It‘s worse than reports in the media indicate. At least in the Auto Industry that primarily use chips in the 14-12nm range. It really stresses us out to see him so stressed out right now. He used to love the industry. Won’t be a Senior Process Engineer in Silicon much longer…………

On top of this, 2021 would be the normal cycle of 4 years for my wife to sell her 2017 RAV4 and buy a new one. She would make a killing selling it right now. Yet, no inventory anywhere near us let alone our normal dealership who I’m confident would not try to take advantage of her as a 30 year customer.

Challenging times indeed, In many, many areas. :(

Oh wow, that is really terrible, I hope your son sticks it out, definitely a lot of tough times ahead due to all the madness of 2020, thanks a lot for the insight though, it explains a lot.

Down here in South Africa dealerships are focusing heavily on their certified pre-owned cars, and the biggest 2nd hand car dealer in the country (called: WeBuyCars) has seen incredible growth over the past year and a half, while new car sales have plummeted and one of our bigger car magazine publishers have said inquiries for new cars have dropped significantly.

I am in a similar position as your wife, I currently own a 2016 Renault Clio 4 and the new model (Clio 5) has launched in a few markets however down here in SA no dealers seem to have been allocated stock as Renault are still assessing the market’s appetite for new cars, seems they are endlessly delaying, so I am simply waiting, thankfully I had extended my cars service plan and warranty until 2023, so don’t mind keeping it another 2 years or so.

The biggest mind trick companies played on us was to convince us that our consumption somewhat defined us.

This and the giant schism existing between any two opposites of any spectrum nowadays.

But here in Switzerland, where phones do only represent something like 4 days wage on average (quote?), the phone as status symbol has been lost to entropy.

But when I do encounter androidUsers, I do assume some kind of savyness albeit financial or technological not to simply follow what has become "mainstream" trend for users in my country iOS.

Part of it is that more young people have access to forums and the internet at large. They can be ignorant, judgemental and rude. Of course there are people who have never lived a hard day in their lives who equate life to the financial value of the products they own. And there’s the griefers; people who just say **** to upset people because they think that’s fun.

The discourse is stupid and frustrating. iPhone, Android… I don’t care what you use. It’s great getting opinions and perspectives that are different from mine. The discussions are much more entertaining when the toxic discourse is left out of it.

There are no doubt some people who are materialistic and feel defined by what they own. However, imo, I have not seen this as a generalized issue as the original post makes it out to be. Some posters on forums discuss in a way that a face-to-face conversation would never transpire in real life.

I'm truly surprised you haven't seen this on many threads. Yes, it goes both ways, and yes it is there in many threads.
