I use my phones as a tool to make a decent chunk of money on the side through flips/price mistakes/etc. during those every second counts, so if the new iPhone is even half a second faster it increases my chances of getting my order in and it’ll pay for itself. That’s my yearly upgrade excuse lol that and I burn through my battery at least 1.5-2 times a day. So a fresh battery every year is a must

How dare you? OP strongly advises against those practices, they do not make sense, you should keep your phone for at least 5 or 6 years, there are no or very minor updates in-between ...

Oh shoot! I never considered this! You know what? I'll atone by switching back to my original PalmPilot... it's basically the same as my current iPhone. And yes, I still have it!

Thanks OP!

only the truly dedicated would continue to upgrade every year, which I think personally is a waste simply because since Tim took over innovation is rare, and instead what we have is a drip feed of incremental improvements, and features that are only available on certain models through iOS (but which could be made available to older models, but then bang goes the planned obsolescence model etc.).

I went from a 12 Pro to a 15 Pro Max, and I'm going to skip this year and see what happens next year. What I am certain of however is that I won't be interested in a fold device, I have an iPad for that stuff thanks.

I was planning on keeping my 15 pro but after dropping it and damaging it this week am considering a base 17 now it looks like it’s getting promotion.

Also like how the base models are usually lighter and slightly thinner than the pros. Having said that I might keep the 15 as it still works but that’s the reason I may upgrade. There doesn’t have to be a revolutionary new design/features as reasons for people to get a new phone.

Why will the 18 be more useful?
So AI will get better in 2026… probably late 2026 it will be fine… maybe beta in early middle 2026…

There might be a new foldable iPhone too, meaning you could do more on the iPhone !! So more useful… and for sure other good improvement…

Now they improve a bit the things on the iPhone… meaning it’s not really more useful than the 16 pro in 90% of cases…

We reached peak phone quite a few years ago. Except for the rare paradigm shift, the only improvements to phones anymore, regardless of manufacturer, will be incremental.

Which is fine with me; I'm excited for the 17 Pro Max and will enjoy the upgrades it brings over my 16 Pro Max (also: upgrade plans make annual upgrades a pretty easy decision)

I used to be a yearly upgrader but now find that price wise this is a much bigger deal than previously especially when they exceeded £1.2k in UK and networks moved to 2 years plans.

I feel the sweet spot for me at least is probably to upgrade every 2 years. You still get a decent resale / trade in price on pro / top of the range models and you feel a bigger jump in spec and performance between the phones.

So on this basis with a 16 PM I am still really happy with then I don’t plan to upgrade but……..I’ve had a bit of a ****** year and now perusing Macrumors today as largely unaware of the expectations on the new models so all bets are off!

I usually lock a trade in deal just in case 😂

A foldable iPhone isn’t necessarily more useful. It may be something you want but you’re not everyone, I have absolutely no interest in a foldable phone. The 17 Pro Max has things I want so contrary to your disapproval I’ll be upgrading my 16 Pro

Better resale value if you do it every year. This way I only pay around £500 for a new iPhone every year.
Even if resale value were zero, for £500 per year you could buy a new iPhone every two or three years. So resale value allows you to upgrade every year for that money, but it doesn’t save you money over only upgrading every two or three years.

I was very surprised, considering all the articles we got earlier, about the record number of iPhone sales this Spring.
That article was misleading. What the survey was really saying is that 70% of those who want to upgrade this fall plan to upgrade to an iPhone 17.

Surely they'll get rid of the notch this year ? That would be a nice upgrade, even if 5 years behind other manufacturers.

Do it then, but you know that many will think it’s a waste….

We have not (officially) seen this years phone, let alone next years and so on. Everybody’s reasoning to upgrade is different (in my case, if performance and efficiency Y/Y is even just a little bit better it helps me) and to me it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to judge a device as a waste when we don’t have the whole picture of what the device is yet 💀

I have a 16PM, and generally I should be in no position to need to upgrade, however it’s something that I want, something that will make me happy, and is at a reasonable cost after trade in.

It’s really that simple for me.

Leaving the Plus and going to Pro was not advantageous for me.
I went from 14+ to 16 Pro.

  • Battery life decreased and have to charge every night.
  • Camera features were disturbingly difficult w/ camera action buttons so I rarely use the camera features. Never used the front camera for selfies, etc...
  • Heavy - weight went up.

Much preferred the 14+ looking back.

That's why this time around I'll be getting the 17 Air.
  • For me I am charging the 14+ once a day anyway. At least the Pro, which is also the phone size I prefer, has the LTPO panel. That should help with my battery life.
  • I don't think you need to use the camera button so if anything I just ignore it.
  • With what I have felt while holding friends iPhone Pros and models in Apple stores I do not find the weight to be an issue at all.
As for the 17 Air the rumours point to it having worse battery life than the 17. So if battery life is the most important thing to you

The iPhone 17 looks like a pretty small upgrade to me, the iPhone air looks to me like a bad deal because of the camera and battery... So why the 17 ??? Many of us have the iPhone 14 Pro, if you don't really care about AI (and I don't understand why you would), then I don't feel it's worth to upgrade. There is no revolution here...

I have an iPhone 13. I replaced the battery once, but otherwise, it has been a good phone.
Apple has been selling us on the idea that somehow the new 17 is going to be a good fit for the AI revolution, although I don't completely understand why.
It will have a new, faster chip.
But I don't understand the relationship between the chip and AI.
When I ask questions on Chat GPT it does not care about the chip in my phone, or my Mac.
Why would it make a difference with a new iPhone?

I don't see how that's relevant. The "many" people you imagine have never contributed a dime to any of my iPhone purchases. The only question that matters is whether the individual who is getting a new phone thinks it's worthwhile, and the price tag and/or spec sheet aren't even necessarily the most important considerations for a specific individual.

I think the 17 air will be great! its like a small pro, minus camera essentially.. will have similar battery. and larger screen, what's not to like?

It’s the same story every year: no, it won’t be a big upgrade for anyone with last year’s or even the year before’s. But anny older than that and you’ll start to see real improvements with the anccum of upgrades over the last 3+ years. Also, a lot of us can get these devices at close to no additional monthly cost with a trade in on a major carrier.
