Ok people the deed is done. I am happy to report that I sold my iPhone 11 Pro Max 256gb, which I purchased in October 2019, for 900$ to a gentleman in his early 50s inside the lobby of my local police station. Lol. There were no eBay or swappa fees of course. So 400$ more than what Apple is offering. I’ll be ready to preorder my iPhone 12 pro max, probably in graphite, 128gb, on November 6. The cost of that will be 1099$ plus tax. I’ll be returning the 12 pro regular in gold, 128, sometime before the preorder day. Anyone have any questions? i Just wanted to test the waters and I put it up for sale and I said to myself I would only justify this annual refresh and get the 12 if I least got 900 or really close to it. Mission accomplished

edit: the offer was made on Facebook Marketplace
Nice transaction. I’ve sold my 8 Plus through Facebook marketplace too and have a girl coming at 11.30 this morning with £280 cash. Very happy with that seeing as the recycling sites quoted me £237 trade in and that’s before they apply the scam deductions once they have the device. I’ll never sell through eBay again as long as face to face is an option.

Updating every year costs me 160€. Updating every 4 years would cost me 500€. However, I would risk 2 years without warranty and I would have poor battery health during 3rd and 4rd years.

So I'm paying 140 additional euros every 4 years, ie 3 euros per month, in order to have the latest hardware, warranty and new battery.

Not bad, huh?
Hmmm, my iPhone 7+ is still at 100% battery health according to Apple andI have it since release.
Apple warranty? Mêh! I hope you never need it because it sucks.
But if you have the money and want to spend it; by all means. Apple loves you.

With the minor upgrades they do on most years, I don't think its worth paying the extra $500 that the OP is suggesting.

It certainly isn't dumb upgrading this year, no matter which iPhone you currently have. The iPhone 12 series are easily the best iPhones Apple has ever made, and the biggest leap between generations ever too. Literally everything has changed with iPhone 12.

Well I would have to kinda disagree. Going by some of the reviews the difference between the 11 pro and 12 pro aren't that huge. 5G is the biggest thing and some reviews say the pictures taken on the two devices look VERY, VERY similar.

I got 600.00 for trading my phone into Best Buy and used that towards the iPhone 12 Pro which pretty much means most of the new phone is paid off already.
Yea Best Buy's trade in for the 11 Pro Max is 100 more than apple. IF i were to take the plunge early next year for the 12 pro max, I would definitely trade my phone in with them.

The trades also give you reward points too. Between all the shopping and this trade I’m bumped up to their “Elite plus”. The only benefit seems to be is you get 45 days to return things.

Except you would be short sighted and misinformed in your thinking. Here is a video of the breakdown from actual real world usage

Realdeal you should have kept your 8 plus as a back up, and also as they are kind of rare now. But its your choice and at least you got a good price for your 8+.

It would have been a bit of a waste chucking it in a drawer as it’s still do good. I have a 6S I can use if ever I need one and the money I got is half the price of an iPad Air which I may get next year.

Every year, I pay the whole cost upfront for the biggest, fanciest iPhone unlocked directly from Apple. This year, I will be selling my iPhone 11 Pro Max (256 GB) on eBay and buying the same size 12 Pro Max. I should get about $900-$950 for it as it is in mint condition. Accounting for eBay fees, PayPal fees, and the taxes I'll pay on the new 256 GB Pro Max, it will essentially cost less than $500 for me to upgrade.

Older iPhones obviously lose value each time a newer model is released, so I am paying only a tiny bit more than if I upgraded every 2 years or every 3 years and did the same thing. I would start saving serious money only if I kept my current phone for at least 4 years, and as a tech enthusiast I just can't bring myself to do that -- especially considering that this is a device I use for multiple hours every day.

In other words, upgrading your iPhone every year is actually not stupid or particularly expensive assuming you pay upfront, keep it in good condition, and sell the old one on eBay. Using this method, I am paying only a fraction of what those on Apple's yearly upgrade program pay. I understand that not everyone is in the financial position to do this, but if you are and are a tech enthusiast like me, I think this is the best way to do it. :)
This tech deserves more than a years usage.

It’s unnecessary consumerism to upgrade for such incremental upgrades every year, & it actually discourages smartphone manufacturers to innovate as quickly as they could.

I used to do this every year - but it was so much more palpable when the new iPhone cost $700 and I could sell my existing one for $500-550. For a while I was averaging $200/year to ’upgrade’.

I’m in Canada, and between the iPhone prices starting to rise from their usual $600-700 (Plus, X, Max, etc) and combined with currency fluctuation, the price of a new high end iPhone easily doubled in a matter of years. My X when new was $1400ish. 2 years later my 11 Pro Max was $1700ish.

I feel like its gotten to the point where I should treat it like any other computer (an iPad, or my iMac) and get say 3 years use out of it before upgrading.

But heck, I’m a sucker for refreshed designs, and I could easily hand down my previous iPhone to my wife and sell hers to recoup some $$, lol.

I think upgrading every year would be very costly and get rather expensive. I just recently got a new laptop this year after my desktop of about 5 years was getting to slow. My iphone 8 that I got used off of a friend suites me just fine. my main reason for the change is Pokemon Go.

I don't think anything is wrong for those capable upgrading their phones yearly. It's even the best way if you have access to programs like the iPhone Upgrade Program.

However, that kind of program is not widely available. And considering financing/leasing options are not as accessible in some markets, plus the lack of value in secondary markets, keeping their phones as long as possible also makes sense for many who want to get the most out of their investment.

I have purchased an iPhone 12 Pro. Went home, transferred all my stuff over. Then made an appointment with the 'iPhone specialist' at the store and traded in my iPhone 11 Pro 256GB for 560EUR store credit.
Will use the credit for my misses 12 Pro Max when it's out.
First time I did that, since I wasn't aware that you can trade in the phone at any given time.

My tech does get more than a years usage ...... I sell it after one year to someone else who carries on using it. Usually it’s someone who is on a budget and can’t afford the latest model but is grateful that I’m selling mine.
Ooooooo I liked this comeback! Well played

Very true, & yeah that does prolong the use of the device (even if I was more referring to more than a years worth for the original buyer, but I get your point) 😏 Though, in saying that, you’re still telling Apple that you’ll be buying their new phone every year, no matter how little it’s improved on last years model. & by contributing to their astronomical sales every year, Timmy will continue to charge whatever he wants for the iPhone, knowing people will buy buy buy.

I do understand your point but having a varied change cycle that suits different people don’t you think this enables some people to have an iPhone that otherwise couldn’t afford it or couldn’t justify the expense, but they are very happy to take my one year old perfect condition iPhone when otherwise they may drift to another ecosystem. In the past I have sold my devices to a recycle company, some of these are refurbished and shipped to countries/markets where people would otherwise never have the chance to own an iPhone. Of course some are broken down for spares or other uses but much of that benefits others

I’m happy to contribute to Apples revenue, without revenue there is no R&D and no great products.

so by me changing my device regularly there are many other beneficial spin offs, not all of which benefits Apple in the way that you perceive

Im also happy to own the latest iPhone because I use it for many hours a day for work and pleasure and is probably the best value for money tech I own whether or not I change it each year.

People say that with every iPhone release jeebus lol
Because in many ways it’s true. New design, flat edges, thinner, different glass material on the front, first 5G, first lidar sensor on iPhone, first night night mode front cam, first Dolby vision, first 1.6 cam sensor, new colors of course, first time 6gb of ram, new A14, new GPU, higher water resistance etc etc. your joke failed 😕

You have no right to tell someone they are stupid. What do you spend your paycheck on?
Disagree

there are many people that are stupid when it comes to finances unfortunately. Yes, they can spend how they want but it’s fair game to call out stupid behavior

just like it’s stupid behavior that results in something like 50% or Americans cant cover a 500 dollar emergency. Or how it’s stupid behavior people have car payments on par with their rent because the car is worth their annual salary.

I wouldn’t be surprised that if you made a ven diagram, people that do the abve would have a strong overlap with needing the latest phones.

Yet the experience is hardly different than what I have on my 8 plus I bought used 2 years ago at half they price someone paid for it new.

iPhones have matured to the point that these “upgrades” aren’t revolutionary in the experience.

however, I do get the joy in having a new phone and if it’s worth it to you, that’s all tht mtters.

That's fine your entitled to your own opinion however I don't put my hands in someone else's pocket because if someone want's to splurge and can afford it then why not? There are far worse things someone can spend money on than an new iPhone such as Alcohol, Cocaine, etc.

Personally I spend my time worrying less about what others are doing and judging them and spend more time enjoying my life which is still possible even in a pandemic.
