lol Im using my iphone x since release 64gb still 30gb available. I had a iphone 5 before my iphone x. Stop wasting money on gimmicks you will never use. Look for example my work phone is a galaxy s8 during this pandemic I have to wear mask. APPLE FAILED at this cause now It can tell you have a mask on and will need you to type your passcode while my samsung I either use IRIS scanner or finger print scanner on the back. since release of IPhone X it took years until a expensive Iphone 12 to release to actually have ability to quickly unlock phone with power button scanner. What I am saying is, upgrading your phone yearly is a waste because Apple does not innovate anymore, they just copy from other phones and act like they innovate by adding gimmicks

I don’t want a new iPhone every year regardless of being lucky enough to be able to afford it. I think upgrading annually for me is a waste of money and I’d rather my kids had new things instead of me having a slightly improved mobile phone. I’m always impressed by those people who keep their phones longer and they tend to get my conversation. I don’t know anybody away from the internet who changes their phone each year as my generation are late thirties and have more significant priorities and interests.

I’ve changed my phone every year since the iPhone 8 Plus. I chose that over the iPhone X that debuted. I don’t have a wife or kids. I got lucky

That's fine your entitled to your own opinion however I don't put my hands in someone else's pocket because if someone want's to splurge and can afford it then why not? There are far worse things someone can spend money on than an new iPhone such as Alcohol, Cocaine, etc.

Personally I spend my time worrying less about what others are doing and judging them and spend more time enjoying my life which is still possible even in a pandemic.
people can spend how they want, I agree. No skin off my back at all. I just now how consumerism operates here and it’s unfortunate the financial state many are in as a result of unwarranted wants. I hope everyone who does upgrade yearly can comfortably do so. If not, I hope they realize it’s not needed.

all this from a guy who has 500k+miles on my pickup and newest computer is 6 years old and yea.... I’m a little biased towards wealth building than toys And accompanying debt

It's fantastic that you are happy with your change cycle but not everyone shares your view ...... can't you accept that everyone has different needs and everyone has a differing views ? rather than telling everyone to "Stop wasting money on gimmicks you will never use" .....

Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what the gimmicks are that I will never use ? I'm interested to know

I get a new phone every year and a brand new car every 5 lol. Both tools to run my business and a tax right off. Spoils of being self employed.
My youngest finished school on Friday so no more school fees haha.

I’ve been upgrading every year, until 6s it kind of made sense. Each “s” year had pretty big upgrades and I was a sucker for new design for the other years. It formed a bad habit. I could’ve hold on to my 6s until X came out but I didn’t. I felt like I was wasting money on 11 Pro going from X. Now 12 Pro is in my hands and I feel like I shouldn’t upgrade again until next design changes come, this model has 6GB RAM for the first time in iPhones meaning it will last a very long time, and Apple’s been keeping designs for 3 years not 2 years now and each year the upgrade is getting less significant. I hope I can keep off impulse purchasing next year.

Except you would be short sighted and misinformed in your thinking. Here is a video of the breakdown from actual real world usage

I enjoy is content and reviews. I will say it does get you hyped and want to upgrade. But yea I am still on the fence about upgrading this year for a wide variety of reasons. Mainly, the rumor mill for iPhone 12 S or iPhone 13 are features that interest me way more than what is currently on iPhone 12.

Touch ID (under the screen)
USB-C
Better modem for 5G
Upgraded cameras and Lidar

Exactly...everyone makes their choices based on their circumstances. People who have a mixed drink or two (or five) when they go out to dinner while I have an iced tea, or go to the bar for drinks with friends regularly, as many do, probably spend on alcohol in a year what I spend on my new iPhone. A pack-a-day smoker spends twice as much per year on cigarettes as I do on a new phone. Someone who stops at Starbucks even a few days a week at $5 a pop spends an iPhone's worth of money on coffee every year. None of it's wrong, all of it is an individual choice. I don't drink or smoke or go to Starbucks, but I do upgrade my phone every year...that's my choice.

Yea I am 32 going on 33 at the end of this month. I got my first iPhone in 2008 and upgraded every two years. That's why I am trying to hold off from upgrading this year, since I upgraded last year. If I were super rich I would consider upgrading every year, but I am not. Now that I am a bit older, saving money and being wise about tech purchases is my jam lol.

Yep yep yep. I don't spend money on any of those things but I enjoy spending ~$2 a day to be on the upgrade program.

Lol I understand. My position is different. I’m able to sell last years phone with minimal loss(sold my 11 pro max for 900) so Ive been getting the newest since I came back to Apple in 2017(was buying LG’s with removable batteries) and bought the iPhone 8 Plus. I can have my cake and eat it too. So Im getting the 12 pro Max and then next year I’ll get the 13 too. Why wait a whole year when you can enjoy yourself now. Lol. This is not an expensive hobby like buying a new car every year. Everyones finances, budgets, the way they look at things are different. Some can easily do year to year but don’t see the value in it. That’s fine. You do you.

You definitely have a point. I could upgrade to the 12 Pro max though but I just know that I am gonna turn around and want next years phone a bit more with the features that excite me 120 hz, touch id, upgraded cameras, better 5G support, potentially USB-C. It's very tempting this year, but I would rather save the money I would use for a new phone or use it for a vacation next summer.

Which color and capacity pro max did you sell and what was your asking price?

It was a 256gb space gray. My initial asking price was 950$. Sold it to a guy in his early 50s on Facebook marketplace

p.s. The phone was pretty much in mint condition. There was a faint scratch in the oleophobic that you could search for under studio lighting. The phone came with the original box and accessories and I gave him the Apple leather case I had on it for free. He was still using an iPhone 6s when I sold it to him. Met him inside the lobby of my local police station

If I were to sell my iPhone 11 pro max I think I would only ask like 650-700 maybe 750 at the most. I don't think I could get away around here with selling a used iPhone 11 pro max for 900. Most people would be like " I can just go buy it new if that's the case lol".

I'm still on my 6+ 128G, bought early '14 for 800€. So after 6 1/2 years, I spent little more than 120€/yr, or 10€/month. I guess it's actually the littlest I ever paid for a cellphone :D

Reading this thread is tempting me to sell my iPhone 11 Pro Max 256gb in green. I still owe half the amount but it seems I’d still make a profit. Decisions.....

I usually upgrade each year. I sold my iPhone 11 128GB in mint condition for 630€ face to face, and that was probably the maximum price I could get out of it. The new iPhone 12 64GB was 929€. So the upgrade cost ended up to 300€.

I go for the none pro only because it's a bit cheaper and the loss when selling is probably a bit less than with the pro.
