I always got the impression Winnie the Pooh is something that the entire family can enjoy, from kids to adults and of course there are many other good books which they could've used, but of truthfully, Winnie the Pooh is basically one of those many other good books which they could've used, so why not Winnie the Pooh

For the most part, Winnie the Pooh is widely known as a Disney character through merchandising, theme parks, television and movies.

I’m sure being a plug for Disney didn’t hurt.

Because Winnie the pooh is a walt Disney productions property. Did you also notice that toy story 3 was also shown? In case you may not know Steve Jobs is the biggest share holder at Disney. His wealth is Greater in Disney than apple. Even if it wasn't Winnie the pooh it would be another walt Disney or pixar product.

John Gruber:

Winnie the Pooh is included as a free sample, and the choice is genius — it’s a beloved story, a good read, and best of all (from Apple’s perspective) it can’t be read properly on the Kindle because the color illustrations are a big part of the experience. No book on the Kindle will ever look this good. The Kindle has its own advantages — its books are generally cheaper, its selection bigger, and e-ink works better in bright sunlight — but Winnie the Pooh epitomizes the iPad’s advantages.

You think so? I feel as if having the internet more portable has allowed me to consolidate my time on the internet effectively. I cannot wait to save enough to get an iPad for school. I picture myself buying an iPad, getting my textbooks on it, (already enrolled and checked. All avaliable when coursmart or MgH comes out) I can't wait to see images on that screen, and search entire textbooks extremely quickly.-also apps like "elements" and mail are very exciting.

I invision an app that allows me to scribe with my finger, and that will play back my notes to me so I can see how I wrote them in class. Hopefully the mic is good enough to even be able to record the lecture w/ the synced "written" notes. mmmmm mmmm mmm.

Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to save enough in time for my summer classes and by fall I'll just want to wait until v2 although itll kill me, but meh, I'm a college kid, what do I expect. I gotta pay for school and a place to live first.
I'm only half joking, but there are certainly far more distractions available now then when I was in school. Just need discipline. In my practice I often consult multi-volume textbooks where each volume is 1,000+ pages. I really look forward to these books being available electronically. The Ipad is the first device I've seen where this would be feasible. That said, the internet has already changed medical practice. I haven't needed to go to a medical library in years.

Because Winnie the pooh is a walt Disney productions property....
Disney owns the television, film and merchandising rights of the characters - the books, I believe are completely separate and Disney had nothing to do with last year's sequel. But as you say, it's a nice plug for Disney...

I thought the same thing, then I started to go through it. And it brought back so many memories. I think it's to get you to feel the magic of the device. Although demographically I'm not sure if everyone is going to relate to winnie. But I loved it. Instantly took me back to being 10.

Because winnie the pooh has tigger in it and the wonderfully thing about tiggers are tiggers are wonderfull things, there tops are made of rubber, there bottoms are made out of springs, they're bouncy, pouncy, flouncey, trouncey, fun fun fun fun fun... Just like an ipad.

Pooh is politically neutral and non-controversial.

How many people cringe when they see the Ted Kennedy book on the demo?

OMG, when I saw that I wanted to puke! What the hell was Apple thinking putting the life story of that drunken whore master front and center for the iBooks launch? Better to put up the repair manual for a Maytag washer.

Sure, I'm an Apple loving right-winger too and will continue to be one. But Jobs seems to have toned down the politics the past few years. Showcasing the Kennedy book was a bit of a poke in the eye, at least to me. No way would he have showcased one of Rush's books.

I think showcasing Kennedy's book was more a matter of timing - and showing off how rich the e-book experience is on the iPad as it is with a printed book.

I saw no agenda in the choice of the book for the iPad introduction. And I would also have never seen an agenda if George H. W. Bush had recently passed away before the iPad's introduction with a similarly rich content book being featured.

And you are right, Jobs would never have showcased one of Rush's books. But it is a reach to compare Kennedy to Rush IMO.

So sad that most any discussion about most any topic seems to come down to the divides of any "reason" - right/left, gay/straight, black/white, Hybrids/SUVs, boxers/briefs - what have you.....

Leave it to some to find offense in Winnie the Pooh. I suggest that folks also read The Tao of Pooh to get a better idea of what maybe what Milne was really trying to teach us about ourselves.

Sometimes being Winnie the Pooh is not so bad when you look at Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Rabbit, Owl, and all the rest....

Because it's a story that everyone has heard of but nobody gives a rats butt about anymore, so there was zero chance of loss of revenue.

I am surprised it wasn't a Pixar related book. Like Toy Story. Pooh is a classic at this point, most people know what the original book looks like on paper, so they would say wow when they see it on the iPad.

I'm sure there are quite a lot of Americans that could come up with reasons that Winnie's a left wing nazi or a right wing nutjob.
