so hypothetically, Apple *should* be able to support USB 3 transfer speeds if they created an appropriate cable (which they don't, since all of their USB-C cables are for charging only so they are gimped at 2.0 speeds). and today i learned that all of the Lightning to USB-C cables on Amazon are not MFi certified.

Will 10.5” support USB 3 speeds now at least?

You would think so but as mentioned earlier, perhaps they aren't due to problems in their implementation. Hard to think of any other reason why they wouldn't.
So today I finally used the following:
1. iPad Pro 10.5” 256 GB capacity model.
2. PC’s USB-C port (ASMedia Controller with latest driver) + Samsung 960 PRO NVMe drive.
3. Original USB-C to Lightning cable (Purchased directly from Apple)
4. Around 230 GBs of data (40 GB mp3 music + 190 GB mp4 formatted TV shows)
5. Added all to iTunes library and let it sync
Time taken: 2 hrs 45 minutes (165 minutes)
Average transfer speed (230 x 1024) / (165 x60) = 23.789 MBps
My verdict: Shameful and Pathetic of Apple to not include USB 3 transfer speeds for $800 dollar PRO device they want to replace laptops. If the internal hardware supports USB-3, then what the hell are the waiting for to release a USB-C to lightning cable that supports USB-3 speeds?
Google Pixel gives a cool 180-200 MBps transfer speeds. But Apple’s priorities are those turdy Animojis it seems.

Yeah, that is pretty shameful.
So the 12.9" will transfer at the higher USB3 speeds w/o any problems? Have there been any tests/reviews on this?

No the 12.9" would be the same - why do you think it would be any different?
So just a thought as maybe there IS a way to obtain USB 3.0 transfer speeds. I don't have the hardware so I won't know, but maybe someone can chime in.
What I was thinking is that you could use the USB 3.0 camera connection kit that Apple recently released and use that to create a USB to USB connection to your computer for file transfer.

Disappointing all around. I guess it's good that I'm still on my ipad2.
iOS needs more. And while the hardware is good so some ways, in other ways...it's not.
This one is in the 'NOT' category.
Pretty sure that the information is correct though. iOS to Mac USB connection is limited to 480Mbps.
It is not out yet so can't test but good point.
So far based on what I see in iFunBox, iPad Pro 2nd Gen (10.5 and 12.9) are using only USB 2.0 speeds (approx 30 MB/s)
This was a major frustration with those devices. Everyone knows that iTunes syncing is very low on Apple's radar these days, but we live in hope.
I agree! I was dismayed when I saw these numbers with my iPad Pro 2nd Gen; I was expecting better.
This will be another factor in deciding if I should make the jump

We don't know at this point. Hopefully when the review embargo is lifted one of the reviewers will tell us.
