Will they be both the same price, and it will be merely a matter of choosing which one fits best, or will you have to pay a bit more for the 42mm?
As much as I love them, this is Apple you're talking about. Of course they won't be the same price.
As much as I agree with you, there would be plenty of whingers who would complain that the 42mm is the same price as the 38mm when they only want the 38mm and would believe are they are being ripped off if they buy one.
And no doubt they will complain when the 42mm is $50 more than the 38mm.
Nope, I think the prices will be like:
Watch Sport
38mm: $349
42mm: $449
Watch
38mm: $549
42mm: $649
Watch Edition
38mm: $1599
42mm: $1799
Maybe the Edition watches will be more expensive. I don't think anyone has a clue about the pricing for those. Only time will tell.
But what about the differnt bands/straps? Would the prices increase for say the steel braclet but decrease if you have the sport band instead? Also what about if you want to by extra bands/straps separately? There are a lot of different combinations it will be interesting to see how Apple price them.
The watches and straps will probably be sold separately. I can't imagine Apple making 120 different SKU's/boxes to match all combinations.
Maybe Apple will bundle their favorite strap with each watch to get you started? Sport will have a sport strap in one color, Watch will have a link strap in same color as the watch, and the Edition will have a strap matching with the gold color.
However, I think they will sell them separately. It makes more sense to me. And, of course, the Sport straps will be cheapest, and link straps among the most expensive. Will probably range from $39 to $119.

I think the price difference will be marginal, $30 perhaps. Like if you want wifi only or LTE iPad.
I have to agree with a few others who have said that the prices will be the same. I really think that it will be all about simplicity. You have to pay $349 for an Apple Watch Sport. What size your wrist is shouldn't influence the price.
That can't be the same price, the body of the watch is bigger, so it cost more than the little one.
And for the sport Apple Watch the price will be 349 et 399.
Well, if you buy a t-shirt in small, the XL one would probably still cost the same (even though it uses more fabric).
My guess:
Sport: $349/$399 Comes with your choice of the colored plastic bands. Comes packaged much like the iPhone 5c.
Watch: Don't know how much, but same $50 difference. Comes with black or white plastic or leather band depending on the price point they are going for. One or the other though.
Edition: I think the Edition will have a base price for each size (probably closer to $100 difference between sizes), and then you will add the band(s) of your choice. I don't think the Edition will sell with a band, and I would not be surprised if it isn't available at the stores. I do not think these will be packaged like all other Apple products, i.e. prepackaged cardboard box.
