Will they be both the same price, and it will be merely a matter of choosing which one fits best, or will you have to pay a bit more for the 42mm?

As much as I love them, this is Apple you're talking about. Of course they won't be the same price.

As much as I agree with you, there would be plenty of whingers who would complain that the 42mm is the same price as the 38mm when they only want the 38mm and would believe are they are being ripped off if they buy one.

And no doubt they will complain when the 42mm is $50 more than the 38mm.

I'm guessing it will probably be around $50 for the Sport, $100 for the SS and $500 for the Edition.

We may also get a longer battery life in the 42mm. Although Apple will likely rate them the same.

They definitely will not cost the same.

Look at all other watches in general, the smaller sized watches always cost less than the bigger sized watches, even if it's just a 4 mm difference.

They can of course just average the price out between the two sizes.

The insides would cost no more. the raw material difference is probably a dollar if that.

Think about it, you are assuming more metal and bigger = more expensive.

Well remember, it's often been the case that a more compact device is the dearer one as it's harder to make, so it can be the other way round.

The only one that would have a real cost difference would be the amount of Gold in the Edition model.

Again, if Apple charge what it's worth, then there would need to be a price adjustment for the gold.

If they charge the crazy price of $5000 some are speculation, for about $1500 worth of watch, then of course, they could easily absorb another $200 worth of gold in the larger case and offer the same price point for that also.

Do they want to been seen to be penalizing certain groups with different prices due to their body size I wonder?

Nope, I think the prices will be like:

Watch Sport
38mm: $349
42mm: $449

Watch
38mm: $549
42mm: $649

Watch Edition
38mm: $1599
42mm: $1799

Maybe the Edition watches will be more expensive. I don't think anyone has a clue about the pricing for those. Only time will tell.

But what about the differnt bands/straps? Would the prices increase for say the steel braclet but decrease if you have the sport band instead? Also what about if you want to by extra bands/straps separately? There are a lot of different combinations it will be interesting to see how Apple price them.

The watches and straps will probably be sold separately. I can't imagine Apple making 120 different SKU's/boxes to match all combinations.

Maybe Apple will bundle their favorite strap with each watch to get you started? Sport will have a sport strap in one color, Watch will have a link strap in same color as the watch, and the Edition will have a strap matching with the gold color.

However, I think they will sell them separately. It makes more sense to me. And, of course, the Sport straps will be cheapest, and link straps among the most expensive. Will probably range from $39 to $119.

That's actually a very good idea, I intend to buy the steel verson of the watch and I want to buy a couple extra straps, the sports band for exercising/gym and a couple more to swap and change colours such as the mid night blue. I'm also hoping it won't go over £1000 - £1500 here in the UK (which is around $1500 - $2000).

I think it's pretty clear which combinations Apple will sell by the detailed listing in their gallery. Then, I assume you may choose to buy as many or few extra straps. For 100% certain though, they will not be the one & only smartwatch manufacturer in the world that sells a watch with NO strap at all.

My own personal suspicion is that it will be less than a $100 difference between 38mm and 42mm variants of the Sport. Closer to $50. $100 would be a 33% up charge.

$75-$100 difference for the Stainless and $200+ for the gold.

I have to agree with a few others who have said that the prices will be the same. I really think that it will be all about simplicity. You have to pay $349 for an Apple Watch Sport. What size your wrist is shouldn't influence the price.

I think the price difference will be marginal, $30 perhaps. Like if you want wifi only or LTE iPad.

$100 for the slight size variance is ridiculous really if that's the case. It's not like the bigger one has double the memory or a supersized battery in it.

I would hope that to be the case. For the iPhone 6 and plus the specs are slightly different (camera) and people would pay extra for a certain utility with the larger screen. I would think the size of a watch would be largely based on wrist size, gender, and personal preference.

I could see the price differing for the gold model, however.

That can't be the same price, the body of the watch is bigger, so it cost more than the little one.
And for the sport Apple Watch the price will be 349€ et 399€.

My guess:
Sport: $349/$399 Comes with your choice of the colored plastic bands. Comes packaged much like the iPhone 5c.

Watch: Don't know how much, but same $50 difference. Comes with black or white plastic or leather band depending on the price point they are going for. One or the other though.

Edition: I think the Edition will have a base price for each size (probably closer to $100 difference between sizes), and then you will add the band(s) of your choice. I don't think the Edition will sell with a band, and I would not be surprised if it isn't available at the stores. I do not think these will be packaged like all other Apple products, i.e. prepackaged cardboard box.

Well, if you buy a t-shirt in small, the XL one would probably still cost the same (even though it uses more fabric).

I agree with you, on the packaging at least, according to Apple the Edition will have a combined charger/jewellery box.

Yeah but we talk about some little more expensive think.
And the screen is bigger too, so do not dream about 38mm and 42mm to be at the same prices ;)
