I suppose that is correct, but not very useful. As I said, even though the badge shows a new message when I open the mail app it isn't on the list. I need to wait awhile (seems like forever, but probably something like 15 seconds) for the new message to actually appear on the list. At that point, it will indeed be marked as read.

It's not a big deal, but is certainly a minor annoyance.

Yep I don’t know why Apple don’t just sync them properly.

This same issue has bothered me since I can't remember on iOS. I get notifications on my Mac and phone. If I open Mail on the phone and read the message, then it will be immediately marked as read on my Mac - as it should. But not the other way around, if I read the message on my Mac, then it still shows as unread on my iPhone until I actually open the Mail app. Then, even after reading it, often the "badge" on the Mail app still indicates an unread message for awhile.

And something changed with iOS 14 to make it even worse on the iPhone. Now, I get an alert on the home screen that shows a preview of a new mail message. But when I tap the Mail icon, the message isn't on the list and it takes a few seconds for it to actually load. This never happened on earlier versions of iOS, the message was already showing on the list when I opened the Mail app.

Have used my iCloud account for all my mail for over 10 years, am using iOS 14 on a iPhone 12 Pro Max and have fast 400/400 Verizon FIOS internet.
Thank you!! finally someone who can wrap their brain around my post. It’s so frustrating! And as you said, it works in one direction but not the other. And now, every time I see that damn @icloud.com email clutching on to my Apple ID (after making my gmail my primary again), I’m like “I hate you. Go away” it’s like a mosquito

The unread badge will not change on the phone, but the email will be marked as read. That’s what Apple told me.

The unread badge will only clear once the mail app is opened even if the message it’s showing as unread is actually read.
But why? they cant just say something like that without explaining the unlogical reason behind it.

Apple recently changed the rule that you cannot change your Apple ID from an @icloud email address to a third party. Previously, this wasn't allowed, but now it is.

So OP, if you want to switch your Apple ID to a non-iCloud email and get off of it because the issues you have, you can. I do not use my iCloud email enough to see if I have the issue you are describing. I still wish gmail supported PUSH in the stock iOS Mail app and I miss it from my @att email that used to have PUSH through Yahoo until that was removed too.

This isn’t true. I tried it, and you know what happened after i made my gmail my primary email? My icloud email became An alias instead. You know, in contact info you have your email and phone number, the iCloud moved to alias and you cannot delete it.

I already did this last year... this is not a solution, cause my icloud mail is still stuck my Apple ID. It’s about dis-attaching the email from the Apple id

I think you are confusing what I'm saying. Changing your Apple ID does not get rid of your iCloud email, but it makes it less tied in to your Apple ID ecosystem, which is what you asked for in the above statement

No. I want to disattach the icloud email from my Apple ID. And by it still being linked as an alias means it’s still a part of my Apple ID.

I'm having a REAL hard time understanding this. You signed up for an iCloud account and with it comes an iCloud email address of some sort. You can use the email address or not. No matter what Apple says, though, the iCloud/Apple email address is the hub of the iCloud services experience.

You can designate another, non-Apple email address as your main iCloud account email and they'll attach it to the account in various ways. However, the one thing they can't do is host the non-Apple email for you. So…the iCloud email must linger even if you don't want it.

Just turn off iCloud email everywhere. I promise that if you don't have iCloud email ON you will not receive iCloud emails unless some sort of forwarding has been set up at the iCloud email web portal.

This is exactly what I have set up. I do not receive emails to my Apple email address and when Apple sends me emails regarding my account they go to an email account hosted elsewhere.

Your Apple ID comes with an iCloud Email. No way to opt out of that. By not having IT your Apple ID, you can choose to never use it, have it on any devices, etc. Apple will email everything that is pertinent to your Apple ID to the primary email.

This is my issue. thank you. Hilarious people are dismissing me, saying they don’t experience it. this is a a common issue.

Its MacRumors, I'd expect nothing less than people running to Apple's defense with the old "you're holding it wrong" distortion field before understanding the basic issue or doing an iota of research.

It's incredibly sad you got umped on right away as if you did anything wrong here.

In fact, EVERYONE using iCloud mail is experiencing this as it's a known issue per Apple themselves.

However, moving an email to a folder, reading a message, or flagging a message does not trigger a push notification. These kinds of updates will appear when you open the Mail application on each of your devices.

For example:

  • If you read one of your iCloud email messages in the Mail application on your computer, that email will still appear in your unread mail count on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until you open Mail on that device. Once you open Mail on the iOS device, the message status will be updated.

It's not an app issue but a server-side thing; intended behavior it appears.

I think I'm confused again about what the OP wants. Originally it was a valid complaint about iCloud email.

I never considered that someone would think that it might be possible to get an Apple email address (@icloud.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com) hosted by someone other than Apple…which is what this seems to have evolved into (post #17). If that's the case I apologize for not deciphering that one!

If the question is, "Can a user get an Apple hosted email address moved to another email hosting service?" then the answer is "no".

No that’s not what OP is asking. They changed their AppleID email to their iCloud address but they are saying they can’t change it back to a different address.

I can change the primary email, but I can’t completely remove the iCloud address from my Apple ID. Once I added gmail to My Apple ID info, the iCloud address turned automatically into an alias next to my phone number.

Good lord. Life is too short for this. Give your contacts whatever email address you wish them to contact you with and whatever address must be your Apple ID that is the reality.

You can’t remove it because ALL Apple IDs are given a free iCloud email. Whether you choose to use it or not is your choice

Did Apple Support tell this on phone, or through some email?
How exactly did they communicate this.

I have a non-cloud email id as the primary email on my Apple ID. The @icloud address is an alias tied to that Apple ID. But still all Apple emails are received on my alias email @iCloud.com address and not the primary non-apple email address.

The unread count not updating is one thing. But I also find that mails deleted on one device still continue to have their notifications persist on all other devices, even after those other devices have synced with the server and mail app had been opened on those devices.

You get your purchase receipt there? I’m not talking about Apple’s newsletter and ads, just their purchase receipts. I receive those only on the email address that is my Apple ID, not my @icloud email
