Not to mention the "standalone" controller is sold by Intel. That licensing in the article linked is for thunderbolt peripherals, which of course anyone can make and then Intel approves that they meet the thunderbolt specification.
ASUS tried releasing a PCI-E Thunderbolt add in card that would work with AMD boards but Intel never certified the card and thus no drivers were released. The AMD compatible card was DOA. Gen 2 of the card was certified but only supported Intel CPUs.

I think this goes to show how little Intel wants to help AMD. It's clear Intel is positioning Thunderbolt as a technology to sell ONLY their CPUs, which again, is the reason why we won't see AMD iMacs this year.

Yeah, Intel isn't exactly known for being hospitable to their competition. I wonder if Apple has any leverage since they helped develop the technology.

I miss the days when AMD cpus were as good or better than intels and highly overclockable. It seems to me that cpu's have stagnated not far from what they are now for the last 10 years with only modest performance upgrades. I understand the narrow market in comparison to when desktops were hot. Now they're not. I wouldn't mind it that much if portables and all in ones had a little more ooomph and were not so connection stingy.

no imac for march....according to rumor (however, lot of times rumor are right)/

which rumour is this? It hasn't been mentioned as being released but can't recall anywhere saying it wasn't being released.

What about the Kabylake MacBook too. No mention of this anywhere but I bet it happens soon.

It was the iPad Pro and red iPhone 7 and se 128gb.

For kaby lake, my understanding is that it's probably gonna be released in october with 16 gb memory since it can't support 32 gb. It was from 9to5mac

Yep, but that didn't say it wasn't coming out.

I am also referring to the MacBook which they always update March / April - there are also no rumours about this.

I just went thru 9 to 5 with a search and couldn't find any current articles about the iMac. So hoping it's just that current iPad rumor, and no mention either way of iMacs.

If Tim Cook left the last October keynote 30 mins early..we can do the math.

You meant non pro version?

ASUS vs Apple. AMD back in the days of AM3+ vs the AMD now. The situation is quite different, TBH. Intel could still resist to grant certification to Apple for its AMD machines, but the other side has more bargaining power than the one in previous cases, especially for Apple which is the largest user and the sole pusher of Thunderbolt in its early days. TBH I don't think Apple wouldn't have terms to protect themselves when it deals with Intel to continue to use Thunderbolt.

Well we might not even see a March event, period, as they may wait until April and hold it at the Steve Jobs Auditorium at Apple Park.

If Apple comes out in March to show new iPads, a red iPhone 7, and a lousy 128GB iPhone SE, the MacRumors forums may implode.

That said, there were no Macs shown at the weak March 2016 event, but they still released the 12" MacBook spec bump a few weeks later so a new iMac could still come soon. Just doubtful we'll get a nice redesign if it isn't at the event.

I think the new iMacs are going to be a spec bump, which would mean a silent update rather than seeing them appear at an event. So around March - April time they might release a short press announcement, which they usually go if there is only a spec bump to Mac's. The same will happen with the 12" MacBook, it did last year, just a spec bump and a new colour added.

They really need to also add USB-C. For example, you cannot even connect the LG 5K ultrafine screen to an iMac as an extra screen (I believe).

I'm about to purchase a late 2015 27 inch iMac with a 256gb SSD at B&H. I've got the payment info added and have am super close to clicking purchase. I really want to wait, but there are so few rumors out there that I'm not sure it'd be worth waiting for.

Probably bad news for those of us hoping for a March event.

Sounds like iPads are getting pushed back a few months - I could see this March event not happening anymore. I don't think an iMac refresh was gonna be a huge announcement, maybe they'll just do it quietly. But more likely I think they'd hold off for an event with more press.

On one hand I hope the refresh is significant enough to get a spot at an event. On the other, I can't wait too much longer.

Yea but that probably wouldn't warrant a keynote place either, unless they are planning something big and worth talking about they will probably just do a press release. Although it has been 5 years this year since the last design change (2012 slimline design). Or if they also plan on putting Touch ID and the Touch bar into the iMac's keyboard, that might be worth demoing on stage.

i'd go ahead and bite the bullet - the late 2015 27" imac's still have great specs that wouldn't be too much improved with a new release at this point anyway (unless they did a huge redesign which certainly won't be in march anyway) - i was in the same boat and just picked up the base model late 2015 27" yesterday and don't believe i'll be regretting it at all. not only does it not seem imacs will be ignored in this march update but also unsure there will be much of an event at all (slight phone and ipad updates? good grief).
