Best thing i can recommend is to put the install CDs in and re-install OS X, and only install the things that you need ie printer drivers for printers that you have, may use at someone's house or may get in the future, languages that you speak, etc. It's a really easy process, and shouldn't take you too long :)

The standard install of OS X is around 15GB, and re-installing it can save several GBs. I brought my install down to about 7-8GB by re-installing only the things that I need.

That's funny. I don't really know the model numbers my friend's have...nor is it very likely to know the model of a future printer. But, oh well.

Not 100% sure as it's been a while since I've done this, but I think you can select the brand of printer rather than drivers for a specific model. Admittedly, you still may not know which brand of printer you might buy, but, if you know there's some brands you definitely wouldn't consider then you could not install them.

I have a hard time believing that. I've had two C2D MacBooks (three different logic boards), and they all whine. Other users have reported having owned more MacBooks which all have the noise.

My 17" doesn't have one, if I put my ear against it, I can hear a fan and the drive but no whine, which part of the machine does your whine come from?

I'm not sure I believe that everyone who thinks their C2D MacBook is fine can't hear the whine... seems a little far-fetched to believe that.

I also think that if ALL MacBooks were affected then none of them would have got past QC.

Isn't that what happened with the MacBook Pro? (Apple did admit them as faulty after about six months though)

It seems that Apple have fixed this issue with the MBPs. It's beyond me why they don't care about the MB.

could you not just install the printer drivers as and when you need them?
(ie. at a later date when you just bought a new printer)

But they weren't all faulty either were they?

I don't see how you can say this is true. Why would they not care about a very popular Laptop they're selling? They don't want people to have problems with their products.

I say that because I ordered my MacBook in November, now it's January and Apple still haven't gotten me a working MacBook. I've seen other people claim having owned four different MacBooks who all whined. So no, I don't think Apple care about it.

people who post here mostly have problems... the majority of mac users enjoy their machines and have no reason to complain

WTF? They should be the ones embarrassed, You didn't manufacture the notebooks, nor do you sell them and claim them as fully functional, it's only right for them to replace any/all defective parts, I'd keep going back until I got a decent machine.

I'm surprise they replaced the first MacBook for one dead pixel. I found this site indicating they don't have to, but by all means you can try. They might exchange it for you if they did before.

http://www.behardware.com/articles/519-2/lcd-screens-dead-pixels.html

The first page you see in this link details what should be expected for LCD Screen classes and the next page (3) tells you about Apple.

i wish people would stop complaining about ONE dead pixel

I do graphics design work. If it's got a dead pixel then it is "not fit for purpose".

Sale of Goods Act (UK)

Subject: Sale of Goods Act, Faulty Goods.

Relevant or Related Legislation: Sale of Goods Act 1979. Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994. The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002.

• Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).

• Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description.

• Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.

• It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract. (but in thise case Apple is often the seller and the manufacturer)

• If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)

• For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

• If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit

• In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

• After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

So in the UK at least, nobody should have to settle for any dead pixels. :D

You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. You have people TELLING YOU that their MacBook's don't produce whining sounds. It's absolutely preposterous to believe that every owner of a silent MacBook simply cannot hear.

Then again I suppose blind people wouldn't notice a dead pixel...

I'm quite pissed about Apple not fixing my MacBook in two months time, yes. And I have yet to see a person who has noticed the whine claim they've gotten a whine free MacBook. So, no, I don't believe the people claiming their MacBook is silent. What are the odds of three logic boards producing the same whining sound if the majority of the logic boards don't? And what are the odds of other people receiving four, or more, whining MacBooks? Like I said, if I ever get a silent MacBook, I'll believe it.

Buying a MacBook in November, and in January still being without a fully functional one, should I find that acceptable?

But who cares really? Most people here praise the MacBook, I doubt my experience will be noticed. Unfortunately.

I should also add that the technician who changed my logic board heard the whine, and told me after the switch "I think this is as low as it's going to get". It was still clearly audible and incredibly irritating. Why would he tell me that, if MacBooks aren't supposed to whine?

actually...for the whine part...i can hear it now....both mine and my girlfriend's one has the little whine sound ....i guess pretty much every macbook has it whether you hear it or not, whether you report it in forums or not.......but anyway...if you use it in a normal environment..its alright....unless you only use your macbook in a dead silent place...
