I'd unbox it, plug it in, fire it up, do an update, and enjoy it.

You can always goof with reinstalling OS X, etc., later. Soak in the new Macbook experience when you get it.

You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. You have people TELLING YOU that their MacBook's don't produce whining sounds. It's absolutely preposterous to believe that every owner of a silent MacBook simply cannot hear.

Then again I suppose blind people wouldn't notice a dead pixel...

Dude i've had my blackbook for about 2.5months now and there is NO WHINING.

Okay, have you tried putting your ear to the left side of the computer and listening? Wait until the CPU is idle, and listen. Then you can open PhotoBooth or something, and listen if there is any difference. Do all this while the computer is plugged in. Is there any difference? You have a CD CPU by the way, not a C2D? I suppose it should affect CD also though.

I can hear it under normal circumstances, if you hear the sound when your ear is up against the computer, you have the whining sound. But if you have inferior hearing, I suppose you wouldn't be bothered by it when operating from a normal distance. That's what I'm saying. All these people claiming they don't have the whine don't hear very well, or never work in a quiet environment.

I thought you had a CD since you said you have owned your MacBook for two and a half months, and the C2D models were released two months ago.

Well then maybe it hasn't even been 2months, i don't know. I won it off of the radio (i didn't have to pay for it)

No i have never heard the whine. I hear a squeaking when i open and close the lid or walk with it, but i ain't complaining about it. Is this a warranty issue or what?

Did you put your ear to the computer and listen (then start PhotoBooth) like I asked you to?

Okay. Please report back when you get home.

Remember, listen to the top left side of the keyboard.

SO i did it, and no there is no whining. Unless i am just oblivious to it. I have perfect hearing (so my doctor tells me).

Victoria, B.C.
Just bought a Macbook for my birthday today. This would have been an excellent thread to read if it wasn't hijacked by "other". Oh well, at least my new computer runs silently!

I have a hard time believing that. I've had two C2D MacBooks (three different logic boards), and they all whine. Other users have reported having owned more MacBooks which all have the noise.
I've got a 2ghz Core 2 Duo and there's no whine at all.
would you format the hard drive first, like for windoze, then boot the os x disc?
You would, but it's pretty unnecessary. If you're really anal about disk space you can clear up a few gigs, but I personally wouldn't.
ya cause people who never have problem with their c2d macbook will never report it here on how happy they are...so I don't worry too much about it....I'm not able to afford the 2gig ram yet...but I guess 1gig is enough for now...
I'm one of these people. Also, I've got 1gb and I've found it more than capable.
But this problem most likely exists due to a faulty logic board design, so it should affect all MacBooks, right?

But due to my experience with the MacBook, I am very sceptical towards people who claim they have a silent MacBook. I believe they can't hear the whine, and I will do that until I actually hear a silent MacBook myself.
I've got impeccable hearing, and I can guarantee you there's no whine on my machine. My older laptop (AMD Athlon 64) did, however, have processor whine, so it's not a foreign sound to me.

i hear the fan is that the whine that every body is talking about ?
No, CPU whine is a high-pitched whining sound created by the processor.
people who post here mostly have problems... the majority of mac users enjoy their machines and have no reason to complain
Again, I'm one of these people. As is my boyfriend, and another friend who owns a MacBook Pro, and another friend with a 1.83ghz C2D MacBook.

I might get another replacement. If so, we'll see how that turns out. I'm getting tired of never getting a working MacBook. :(
