All this and people trying to get out of contracts, find loopholes in contracts etc over a phone that has a) yet to be announced and B) may not even be worth upgrading. Just relax folks and see what the new phone offers first

...if I am loyal and purchase every new revision I feel I should be rewarded...

I buy all of my groceries from Walmart, and I don't feel like I am entitled to a discount because of this. I cannot stand this view of people these days that they are all owed something. When you purchased your new iPhone 3GS, you signed a TWO-YEAR contract to keep that phone and that account. The contract states that if you break that contract, you must pay a penalty.

It couldn't get any simpler than that.

I, too, bought an iPhone 3GS on launch day. Will I want the new one when it comes out? Yes. If AT&T does offer a discount for me to sign a new contract and get it, will I? Probably (if Wifey lets me). Do I feel AT&T SHOULD do this to me because I am such a good customer? No way.

I will likely keep my 3GS until my contract is up, or until an iPhone is released on Verizon, since their service is a million times better where I live. And if that happens before my two years are up, I'll pay the early termination fee. Why? Because I don't feel like I am owed ANYTHING. I knew the terms when I signed up. So did you. Stop whining.

I would imagine they follow very much the same process they did during the 3GS with regard to 3G customers.

As a 3G customer myself, I won't feel one bit of sympathy if they do hold users to their two year contracts; after all, you signed a contract.

I pretty much agree with your statement. I did sign a two year contract and I should be held to it BUT if I am renewing for another 2 years I feel I should get the subsidized price.

Well, the issue, of course, is that the subsidy, in theory, is repaid to AT&T by your two years of monthly payments.

You'll be eligible 18 months after signing for full subsidy. Family plans and FAN accounts of $200+ will be eligible in 12 months. There will be a reduced price otherwise between unlocked and fully subsidized.

It will be based on the user's upgrade eligibility. For instance I'm upgrade eligible 8 months after an upgrade. The joys of paying more per month and having a corporate FAN # attached to my account...

I have a FAN account. How can I tell my upgrade time length? Just bc I have one does that guarantee that it will shorten at least a little?

Exactly which is why I feel I should be able to renew for another whole two years and get it...?

If anyone here wants to be eligible to get the subsidized price this June who bought last June, just make sure that your services total $100 each month. That will make you eligible to upgrade every year. Of course you gotta have the services total $100 each to month to be eligible every year.

Haha I remember when 2g owners slammed 3g owners for wanting to upgrade when the 3gs came out

Now the shoes on the other foot

Not fun is it?

Why? You still need to pay off your current subsidized price. If you want out, then pay the ETF fee or pay the non contract price for the iphone

Exactly which is why I feel I should be able to renew for another whole two years and get it...?

Once again, what about the current subsidy that you are paying off?

But if you get an a upgrade price when the 4G is out you still haven't payed your 3GS subsidy, the new 2 year contract only guarantees them the new 4G subsidy. And what happens when the 5G comes out and you want to upgrade again?

Short answer, no. Long answer, it depends on the deal your company signed with AT&T to begin with. Most FAN accounts are upgrade eligible in a shorter time span than regular post-paid customers.

Your best bet is to look online at your account and see.

Yes, that's another way, one thing to remember though - your bill has to meet and/or exceed $100 prior to the addition of taxes. So if your bill is $98 prior to taxes you will not be eligible.

Also on that note, they go by the previous three months to determine this factor. So for those of you that want to be eligible and you're a few bucks shy, add another package three months prior to the "month" you want to upgrade and you'll be good.

Exactly which is why I feel I should be able to renew for another whole two years and get it...?

Not really. It is pretty simple. For instance when the 3G came out, it was reported that they paid Apple $325 in subsidies for the 8GB iPhone so that a customer could pay $199 or whatever it was. So AT&T is immediately $325 in the hole after letting a customer buy at a reduced cost. The idea is that they recoup their money over the span of the ENTIRE 2 years of the contract. If you only last one year on that contract before getting a new phone, they would only recoup 1/2 of the money they subsidized.

So you see, in no way does it make sense for them to let you buy another iPhone at the subsidized price when you are only 1 year into your current contract. Like them or not, AT&T is a company and their goal is to turn a profit. Losing money on phones doesn't facilitate that goal.

Well, this 3GS user is eligible for a $399/$499 3GS early upgrade now, and will be eligible for a full subsidy after 17 months. I imagine that the same will apply for the 4G.

Last year I just upgraded my mom and then I got her phone then we switched the phone #s so in effect I had an iphone with my phone # and then she got her old boring razor back so I just used her upgrade

Here is what mine says

Is that the full subsidized price?

Yes, I believe it is. Mine says "As a valued AT&T customer, this line qualifies for discounted equipment pricing when you sign a new 2-year commitment." When I click to upgrade, the 16GB iPhone is $199.

hey everyone so last year i wanted to up grade from my 3g to the 3gs and i had to pay so then i hatched a plan. the plan was to upgrade my mom to the 3gs and downgrade myself, then have them switch the #s. so att gladly did that fore me. so now its 2010 and say a new iphone comes out, i would have to use my dads upgrade but i checked att's site and some how i am upgradeable "You are not eligible to upgrade at a discounted price due to your length of service. However, you may still purchase a phone/device at the full price. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price on 05/20/2010" this year from the day i upgraded last year. so any thoughts im i somehow being misled buy what i hope is actually true?

I am not really worried about upgrading, the next iphone wont add much to the 3gs hardware wise. I am more interested in the software improvements.

They need to sell the phone at full retail price and only at that like the first iPhone. That way no one complains. If you want it. Pay the full price. You gotta pay to play.

They do sell them at full price.
What didnt make sense with the 2G iphones was that even though you were paying full price ($599) for the phone you were still locked in to a contract with AT&T for 2 years.

Someone please help me understand. I feel like these statements are contradicting. FTR: My iPhone got stolen a week ago so I don't have one now but I do have a fan account. What does this mean?: You are not eligible to upgrade at a discounted price due to your length of service. However, you may still purchase a phone/device at the full price. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price on 11/20/2010

It shows an 8GB 3G is $299.
