stupid..
i could have told you the iphone would blend without wasting 500 dollars.
hmm what could he do with 500 dollars...
for 17 bucks he can immunize kids for 6 diseases (UNICF)

$17x29(kids)=500

save 29 kids...or blend an iphone.

From the price of that iPhone the buyer could have financed the shelter, food, medical care, and education of a child in the developing world for 20 months. I personally wouldn't buy from a company that brags with doing that.

Puhlease. You guys make me want to puke! You buy 5 hundred dollar cell phones and the latest and greatest Apple computers for pete's sake! How much money have you blown on technology crap that you could have spent on anothers behalf "in the developing world".

Save me the righteous indignation and go out and do something with your lives. I bet these guys at Blendtec do more positive things for the country and the world than you do in a year pounding on your macbook sitting in a dorm room.

The "remains" of Tom Dickson's blended iPhone (plus a new Blendtec Total Blender, of course) are being auctioned off on eBay. The current bid is $1126, and the entire winning bid goes the Primary Children's Medical Center.

What were you people saying about wasting money and saving children's lives?

What's the black stuff that bubbled up near the end?

And my god, what an explosion of hardware just before the 'magic smoke' was released :)

If you've seen any of Supernatural, you'll know that the black smoke is the earthly form of a demon or hellspawn that has been forced from it's prison... so every iPhone comes with it's own soul-eating demon - something to think about :D

Macrumors newbie, when using this list you should learn to be a little more polite, less pretentious, and you shouldn't make unwaranted assumptions about the profession of the people you're addressing. And in case you're not aware of it: there are more meaningful ways to use a Macbook or an iPhone than putting it in a blender. I would guess most macrumors users do have better uses for these techological master pieces.

Thanks Sbrocket for pointing out that the blended iPhone was auctioned for a good purpose. Of course it would have been even better if both the blender company would have used their $500-$600 for the iPhone to give to charity PLUS the person who bought the remainders would have used his/her money for charity. But perhaps this course of action would be too rational for humanity in its present state.

Anyway, I didn't mean to upset anybody. Sorry if I did.

$500 (why blend an 8 gig? no one would know the difference) is a drop in the bucket for advertising...and look at all of the press they got for it.

That's the best $500 anyone ever spent for advertising.

Mr. Macbook, You are right, the dorm room line was a bit much.

I don’t wish to pick a fight with you, but your line of thinking on this just cracks me up! These “technological masterpieces” are nothing more or less than the parts and thought that go into making them. They are not children, animals, or trees for that matter. How you can elevate the position of an inanimate object like an iPhone, and at the same time denigrate “humanity in its present state” is baffling to me.

Your reasoning and intellect on this subject might be better served if you decried “humanity in its present state” for buying en masse a $600 phone, not one guy for blending it.

I never elevated the phone above an inanimate object! No idea why you think I did!? All I wanted to say is that being the piece of complicated high tech that it is (or call it whatever you want) I wouldn't shred it in pieces. Seems like a waste to me. I *personally* would have been more impressed if their blender would have shredded a stone or something else that's more or less as hard as an iphone but didn't take as much effort to produce.

I think I see your point. I think though that the responsibility is shared between the people who fall for the hype around the phone and the blender company who exploits this weakness for their own profit. And I'd like to add that there can be more or less good reasons for spending $600 on the phone (although probably nobody is completely free of the hype).

"technological master pieces" was your term of choice. Sounds elevated to me. I see them as nothing more than a mass produced consumer electronic gadget. But I guess this is just a matter of semantics.

Man, this is a heavy sentence. You make it sound like Blendtec is marketing cigarettes to my 7 year-old.

Profit is a good thing, but you say it with such distain. C'mon, you have to admit that these blender videos are freaking hee-lair-ee-yus and innovative. Who would have the audacity to blend a freaking iPhone or all the other stuff they do to demonstrate their product? I think it is brilliant and I bet they are selling a grundle of blenders as a result. Kudos to them for creative marketing prowess. There is no exploitation going on here whatsoever. Apple produces a phone and sells it to the consumer at a price that the "market will bear". Blender company uses YouTube to market their products in a creative way. Exploitation is a term more suited for a third-world country government bent on corruption and oppression.

Holy crap!

There are some seriously stupid comments on this thread.

Blender company spent around a $1,000 to create a commercial for their product. The budget included an iPhone, a blender, an outfit for the "host", and 30 minutes of editing time.

This commercial, made for way under the millions of dollars companies spend on tv commercials, was released on the internet.

People see video commercial, people show video to friends, awareness of companies blender product goes up. So do sales of said blender.

As to the subject matter of the video commercial, it is way cheaper to buy a phone and blend it then to go on location, with associated actors and technical costs, to film a traditional commercial. Smart use of a companies advertising dollars.

What the owner(s) of the blender company do with their profits is completely up to them.

The iPhone is just a phone people.... nothing more.

That must be on super strong blender. My blender has trouble with too much frozen fruit.

Haha... iSmoke.. I love how it keeps playing the video while it gets blended (at least for the first few seconds)

Will it Blend - iPhone

I have seen several of these promo vids for the Blendtec blender. But today my coworker pointed out to me there was an iPhone “Will it Blend”. I love how he has the phone on when he drops it in. Look how its’ still running after getting hit pretty hard a few times before being turned into dust. There is one of an iPod on there somewhere as well.
