That's a whole lotta story... trying too hard?

Yes i think so. That last thing an Apple employee that lost any type of unreleased device would do is talk to a tech media site over the phone....

Really? Who remembers this, "stuck on its back: 8800601pex1 and N90_DVT_GE4X_0493"

No more Gizmodo

The plot thickens. Gizmodo really are a bunch of s---heels. Up until today, I went to that site every day. Now I guess I'll get all my info from Engadget.

...and since I'd rather you didn't give Giz any more hits, here's the complete text so you don't have to go there:

This the second MAJOR strike against Gizmodo for me. Really unforgivable to destroy someone's career. FYI: the first strike was at CES in 2008 when they turned off all of the displays including the ones during the Motorola keynote as a prank.

Wow Gizmodo really took a turn and polished it there that was a great read. Enticing.
Anyways I hope this kid dosen't lose his job, he's probably buzzed and stood up to put his jacket on placing the phone on the stool.

This definitely isn't really such a bad thing for apple, just more hype, such a fiasco too.

Haha! Did they really? Wow, good one

You know it doesn't really sound like this guy is going to or did lose his job. He lost the iPhone in a bar on March 18, 2010. Apple knows it was him. Has Apple been deciding for a month if they should fire him? Read the Gizmodo article, it didn't sound like he was fired. And maybe just maybe Gizmodo posted his name because they knew he wasn't going to be fired.

Gray Powell: Hello?
John Herrman: Is this Gray?
G: Yeah.
J: Hi, this is John Herrman from Gizmodo.com.
G: Hey!
J: You work at Apple, right?
G: Um, I mean I can't really talk too much right now.
J: I understand. We have a device, and we think that maybe you misplaced it at a bar, and we would like to give it back.
G: Yeah, I forwarded your email [asking him if it was his iPhone], someone should be contacting you.
J: OK.
G: Can I send this phone number along?
J: [Contact information]
He sounded tired and broken. But at least he's alive and apparently may still be working at Apple—as he should be. After all, it's just a ****ing iPhone and mistakes can happen to everyone—Gray Powell, Phil Schiller, you, me, and even Steve Jobs

So tell me this guys. If they went to all of that fuss over the keeping the ipad under lock and key then why would they just allow the ip4G to be leaked. And feel free to ignore this point because i know alot of people on here ignore logic

Production iPhones are always field tested by hundreds of people, and who better to help than the very engineer who designs the baseband testing?

As for the jerk who kept the phone, he should be charged with theft and sale of stolen goods. Gizmodo even says that the thief knew who the owner was when he looked at the phone while it was still working:

Gizmodo said:
Apart from that, just six pages of applications. One of them was Facebook. And there, on the Facebook screen, was the Apple engineer, Gray Powell.

Poll: which story is more epic "lost in a bar" or "picture in an elevator"

So for those of you who have been around for both, which story do you think is more epic and will carry on?

what is this pic showing off? obviously an apple product and clearly it's the elevator pic but what is the product? lol

Is it a big hoax from Gizmodo?

I'm sorry but it almost seems like the whole thing is a hoax. Can we post a screen shot of the device on? Yes I know it won't boot up, but it has the itunes connect screen right? Would it be possible to put the phone in DFU and load 3.1.3 or a dev 4.0? I know I'm probably way off being a NOOB, sorry it just seems a bit fishy, the buttons seem odd.

The elevator thing was just some box of a current product...

"Loosing" the next gen iPhone Proto is definitely classic.

A leak like this when you can get Android Phones for FREE and the new Windows Mobile Phones about to be released is pure coincidence...

Seems legit to me; the video convinced me.

Habitus :apple:

I am sorry for the first post looking it over again and again and again, it does seem real. almost like a "It's too good to be true" kind of thing.

And yes I'll be waiting for my prize, ty, sometimes it's the simple things that makes one happy.

To get a beta, you need to be able to connect the phone to iTunes and find the UDID , and then submit it to Apple as a developer's phone. I'm sure if Apple saw this UDID attempt to be registered, they would deny the registration. Or if it's automated, it wouldn't go through, as it's not a recognized UDID for a retail model.

If it is an iPhone prototype, there would not be a beta available through iTunes. Only Betas for released and compatible devices would be available, those being iPhone 1,2 and iPhone 2,1. This new phone is 3,1.

Thank you Andrew for your thorough explanation, but wouldn't you still be able to power it on and get the connect to Itunes screen? or no?

I did read the article, I just figured as something as great as this that they might post a pic of it to compare resolution difference next to a 3g/3gs. I apologize if I missed it, and by no means meant to angry any of you.

Don't worry - just seems like lots of people on here now run around showing off their imaginary sarcasm & power wand.
