Will my crazy plan to get an iPhone work?

Wait until the iPhone comes out. There are a lot of rumors on price drops, so you may not have to sell everything to get one

Well what good is a phone if you can't use it? (Besides breaking it!)
Also, if it matters to anybody I'm also selling my 5g iPod for $250 with extras to raise money for this.

Don't end the contract early and pay a $175 termination fee. That's ridiculous. The iPhone comes out in June, so you're only going to have to wait....9 months. Well, that's a long time. But seriously if you _need_ the iPhone before then, I'm sure it would be cheaper to open up an account with Cingular just for the iPhone and keep your existing family plan with Verizon. Verizon should let you adjust the plan to make it cheaper/less minutes since you wouldn't be using your phone with them anymore.

I'd like to know why you need the iPhone this bad. To impress your friends? Of course everyone wants the iPhone but do they really need it? Nope. Many other phones can do the same task.
Verizon is increasing text messaging from $0.10 to $0.15 in March, so you should be able to get out of the contract without the early termination fee if you complain about this.
And switching to Cingular, you all should still be able to keep your phone numbers.

I'm not completely sure you NEED the iPhone, as a methamphetamine addict doesnt NEED his daily fix.
I voted for maybe because you are assuming that each phone will be able to be sold for the amount that it would cost to eliminate the service, but you can obviously fail to meet this and not break even. Another thing you might want to consider, but isn't necessarily a problem, is the fact that the plan might not be EXACTLY the same... minutes / monthly charge, etc.

Yes, I know I need a Mac too. I'm waiting for a new iMac or Leopard to come out. After that i"m getting the biggest screen iMac.

you kind of NEED a mac to take full advantage of the iPhone with all the contact cards and such.
My suggestion would be to wait until march because the first versions of the iPhone may not really work to well.
Personally i don't have a cell, so i'm not having a problem like this, so when the iPhone comes out,

Being that I go to an Apple Store once or twice a week, and I'll use the iPhone every time, and I won't have it for 9 months. I'll just go insane.
i'd suggest waiting if only to see improvements. it's rarely the best idea to ditch something that works for the first-ever of a product. the iPhone will likely have some kinks. it might not be worth the hassle to cancel your plan and port everything over to Cingular until all the bugs (hardware, software, and service-related) are worked out.

Your plan won't work. What phones are you selling that will get $175 each on eBay? Those better be extremely nice phones. Don't forget that other people will be upgrading and selling their old phones too.
Is the iPhone really worth $525 cancellation fee, the $500 MSRP, and the higher data rate plan, which is likely twice as much as a regular plan? I'm assuming the sale from your old phones roughly offsets the price of buying your mom and brother new phones. If you wait nine months, you save the $525 cancellation and the price of the phone itself drops.
Sorry, this just sounds like teenage delusion to me.
But now that I reconsider, why are you switching your family to Cingular also? Why not just switch your plan? You're paying for it yourself, right?
Why I'm switching my whole family to Cingular:
1. My dad needs a business/personal cell phone combined (for e-mail) and his Motorola Razr just doesn't fit his needs.
2. He also wants an iPhone.
3. My mom and brother never have service with Verizon.
Also my dad told me he will pay for phone calls and messaging, as long as I pay for my own data plan and iPhone.
My only chance is an unlocked version for T-Mobile. Will that be available in Europe so I can ship one back to the US?
I'm as bigger fan of Apple as the next person. I've used Apple products all my life but I'm just not that enthusiastic about the iPhone. The iPod for me is essential and I've owned one from the beginning it is the ideal device of it's type. I love my macs and the OS they use but iPhone is a nice design lacking in features at a very high price.
Maybe when the second generation comes out I will think about getting one. The multi touch thing is a great idea but I just don't see it being used that much in every day use, especially without 3G data in europe. The on screen keyboard has already been questioned by a few Apple stalwarts that have had chance to use it. To be honest I'm far more interested in the recently announced Samsung (?) with touchscreen and slide out keyboard.
From a business point of view I don't really see a single feature that makes this an essential business tool and the lack of software support for Office will be a big turn off for some. Visual voicemail is interesting but not worth the high price. The storage size also means it isn't a true iPod replacement, although knowing Apple they will intentionally cripple the 6th Generation to keep the iPhone at the head of the feature pack!
I'm sure it will be a big hit simply because people will want it for the cool factor but interface aside the actual product is not that amazing. Do yourself and your family a favour and wait for your contracts to expire. Can you not get a personal contract for yourself?

I should echo that it may be better for mrat to get a job before seeking out the iPhone. I could see some people "needing" an iPhone (or similar) in the sense their employment requires the features it provides, or the specific model because of an exclusive feature. But "going insane" is never a sufficient reason for needing a phone.
Actually, I would love to know how old this kid is. I'm starting to long for the days when phones/beepers/pagers were banned in school...
