I know why he needs the iPhone...BECAUSE ITS THE IPHONE!! If your not insanely excited about the iPhone then why are you even on this blog? More power to you mrat93, hope you figure out how to get the iPhone, I'm still trying to figure it out for myself. :)

I should echo that it may be better for mrat to get a job before seeking out the iPhone. I could see some people "needing" an iPhone (or similar) in the sense their employment requires the features it provides, or the specific model because of an exclusive feature. But "going insane" is never a sufficient reason for needing a phone.

Actually, I would love to know how old this kid is. I'm starting to long for the days when phones/beepers/pagers were banned in school...

And what kind of jobs do you expect a 14-year-old student to get?

shoveling snow for neighbors, doing things for elderly neighbors, mowing lawns in the summertime...

you know, the normal things that 14 year old students do.

normal 14 year old students do not normally need to purchase $500 phones  .

Hey thanks. I saw your site before I think. Great idea! I would do it too if I knew how to make a website or if I even had a Mac. Get any donations yet? Good luck to you!

Let me rephrase what I meant.

I want a real job. Not a job when you go to random peoples doorsteps and say "Hey stranger! Want me to mow your lawn or shovel snow out of your driveway so you can pay me less than minimum wage?".

Maybe I'm on here because I love Apple's products and own plenty of them, but refuse to switch to Cingular ever again in my life, even if the phone and plan were given to me for free.

Everyone needs to stop acting like the damn iPhone is Steve's gift to the world. It isn't. There are plenty of other excellent phones out there that I can use without being tied to what I consider to be the nation's worst carrier.

And what kind of jobs do you expect a 14-year-old student to get?

Any of the jobs I had when I was 14. They vary from newspaper delivery to neighborhood services (lawnmowing/shoveling snow/any other lawn care). If you can't get a real job, you get what you can. Demanding a real job is a sense of entitlement that you will need to divest yourself of. Even professionals who prefer not to start their own companies sometimes end up doing the equivalent of the random job. Moreover, what right do you have to demand any salary? What experience do you have?

But, I must ask a question in return. What kind of phone does "a 14-year-old student" need?

Of course mowing someone's lawn depends on the square footage. 10,000 sq ft should take maybe an hour and you can charge $20. That's definitely more than minimum wage.

(a) It's a forum, not a blog.

(b) No one needs the iPhone. Maybe vocabulary lessons aren't what they used to be.

(c) Going to these lengths to get one means he's way to excited about it and will be crushed when a better one comes out in January and he's got 1.5 years left on his contract.

If it's that difficult to get the v1.0 release of anything, you're almost always better off waiting for v2.0.

My son made $20+ an hour doing lawns when he was 14 - 16, $80 - $100 a weekend

He'd also rent an aerator machine for the weekend, do 6 - 8 lawns at $50 each, and clear $250 - $350 for the weekend, after gas and rental.

Then he'd do the same the next weekend with a rented edger.

You only need about 10 steady clients to keep you working full time on weekends. Not random at all.

Why I'm switching my whole family to Cingular:

1. My dad needs a business/personal cell phone combined (for e-mail) and his Motorola Razr just doesn't fit his needs.
2. He also wants an iPhone.
3. My mom and brother never have service with Verizon.

Also my dad told me he will pay for phone calls and messaging, as long as I pay for my own data plan and iPhone.

Okay, that is a very different situation. If you really don't get service at your house, then this is usually a legal way to end your service agreement early without penalty. Try calling Verizon and telling them that none of you get service in your home.

I still think the $500-600 cancellation fee is ludricous, but there are plenty of ways to get around that if everybody actually wants to switch to Cingular.

I don't see the iPhone being a good business phone for your dad, but whatever...

Thanks. Most people misuse the word "need". It's right up there with "hate", which is also chronically overused these days.

If your employer requires you to have a phone with features that only the iPhone has -- a far fetched scenario, indeed -- then what did they do for the decades before the iPhone was ever announced?

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say nobody in the world NEEDS an iphone yet. There, I said it. The world didn't explode. <whew>

Some people will get great utility out of it, perhaps, some will buy it just because its a really nifty toy.

sorry but i have to say that asking for money on the net is pathetic! Especially when its just so you can have the latest toy!

If you can't afford an iPhone because of having kids and you want one so badly then use contraception! Your problem you deal with it.....stop being what is nothing more than a begger!

I also can't understand why you are only asking for $0.75 99 times. That is nowhere near the required cost of the iPhone. This says to me you almost have all the money......therefore.....if you require so little why dont you sell that phone you show in the video and get your money!?

That stops you begging......and stops you wasting a perfectly useable phone!

If they "never have service" with Verizon, don't plan on it being any better with Cingular. I live right near Westfield and have both (one for work & personal) - Verizon gets much better reception in our area... If they have problems w/ Verizon, mommy and brother may not be happy.

1. Never lost anything important to me.
2. Never broke anything important to me.
3. The stupidest thing I've done is hit a kid with a shovel in 6th grade:D .
4. I want a job. Not a lawn mowing or babysitting job. I want a real job working at a store or something like that.
5. I know I have a Dell. I'm getting an iMac as soon as updates occur, an entirely new iMac is released or until Leopard comes out.

I'm not convinced that everyone else on this contract also wants to get out. Why don't you just wait? You have enough money for an iMac but not an iPhone? Get a Mac Mini and the iPhone.

I just plain do not want to wait. My dad agreed to buy me an iMac because he bought my brother a MacBook.

U cud gett a grantt 2 lurn Engrish.

In all seriousness, I'm 13, and I've bought a $1500 computer and about $1000 of photography equipment with my own money. I've designed a website or two and installed elderly people's computers and networks, but most of that money has come from doing odd jobs around the neighborhood then doing smart things with the money I make (I have 2 high yield interest bank accounts and stock Bank of America and a few other companies. This has worked just fine.

People who have enough money for a computer and internet service then go online and beg for more gadgets piss me off more than you can imagine. Our atmosphere is terrible, there are people dying of AIDS, millions of children in Africa are starving, and 17 thousand people are murdered each year in your own country. Yet you want people to give you money so that you can have a stylish device that makes you seem cool, so that you can feel good about yourself.

The greed and addiction to capitalism of some of my countrymen truly makes me feel disgraced to be an American citizen. Note that I'm not a communist or anything. I buy things, but only if I can pay for them myself. I'm all for helping others, but only others who actually need help.

And you don't need an iPhone. And I won't hear otherwise.

Oh big friggen deal, I added an "s" by accident so I must be retarded. Listen, I know that thing is a terrible idea. I'm just doing it because I've seen others do it. Last year some guy got an iMac in like 8 days doing this. Also, with the donating to other causes stuff you were talking about, if people want to donate to an AIDS foundation, they'll do that. If they want to donate to me, they'll do that. And you are right, I don't need it as if I were to die if I didn't. I just really want it.

Ok so I am a little older, 17. But I have a job, a blackberry (which I pay the data plan on per month $39.99), and a car (which I pay gas and insurance for). I break things, but I am sure that you break stuff too. As for stupid stuff, if students didn't do stupid stuff, then we would never learn, and everyone knows we need to learn all of those life lessons. I have lots of friends, and I dont need a phone for it. And I have a MacBookPro which I paid for along with iPods, and iTunes music.....

Now I know this was not meant for me in particular, but it is quite a blunt statement to be making; when I have to say not every student is like that.

U cud gett a grantt 2 lurn Engrish.

Well I some what agree with you, I have acomplished the same things in buying equipment except I delved into the video, and editing section of it.

I do have to say it is immature for you to criticize his NEED for an iPhone, if he wants an iPhone it is what he wants. To say he needs it is an over statement, then again words like need, love, and hate are all grossly overused. Also to say that you sometimes feel ashamed to be an American is a disgrace, if you feel ashamed then don't live here. And if you think people should donate for world causes, then you should donate too...I do.

That all being said, to criticize him for wanting an iPhone while the world is starving and little girls are getting pregnant, and HIV is spread by multi-use needles just don't forget your a kid, and its our job to want stuff growing up is good, but damn if he wants an iPhone then by all means let him fundraise for his obsession!
