Here is what you do. Find an area that verizon does not cover. Say you are moving there. Just call up verizon, and tell them you are moving. Verizon will then say they don't have service there. Verizon will have no choice but to cancel your contract. They can't charge you for moving ;)

Obviously you don't need it, but want it. You will not die a horrible death at the hands of the phone police if you don't get one.
Many people confuse needs and wants and if you invest all your energy in believing that you "need" things, you're on a path to unhappiness in the rest of your life (not to mention the environmental problems that will be caused by always "needing" more).

Admit that you want it rather than need it. Once you do that look at the benefits it will bring, and ask yourself are the benefits worth the near $2,000 (phone for you, your dad, breaking the contract and new phones for your brother and mother). Your dad is already being generous giving you an iMac. If you still want it and think the benefits are worth it, that's fine, but don't pretend that you need it.

As to advice
If you can wait for the 2nd gen, so much the better - you will get a better phone and I don't know what 3g is like in your area, but that would be worth waiting for if it's going to be available to you. The iPhone is a great product as specified, but it will become much better in the future. My guess is the 2nd gen will be out in early 2008 when the iPhone is released in Europe so it can take advantage of the 3g networks here.

If you can break out of the contract without having to pay, that changes the sums pretty drastically. The moving idea suggested above sounds like a good way to try.

Do consider getting a mini rather than an iMac and using the money saved there on the iPhone.

Don't look for charity for a luxury item (and that's what it is). It's demeaning, and offensive when there are people who are actually hungry in this world. Just because someone else did it doesn't make it right. Think about people in your own country who can barely afford to eat, before you even get to poorer countries and the war torn areas of the world.

There's nothing wrong with earning a bit of money. Do some jobs and put the money away. If you've a birthday coming up, ask for money instead of presents and put it away. Don't expect things as of right - you will appreciate it more if you put something towards it (plus if it's your money you will think harder about whether it's actually worth it for you).

How do you know you need the iPhone. We don't even know what the final features will be or full functionality. Wait until the phone is out and see if you really need one. I was considering one but went ahead with a W810i Walkman phone to have a multi-function device. I would love to have an iPod, iPhone or some combination of all of the above to go with my MBP. Be patient and see what you really need and more importantly what you can afford. In my world (old guy) March 08 will be here a lot sooner than I want. :D

If getting out of a contract was that easy, don't you think everyone would do it? You need at least a utility bill from the new place you've moved to before they would even consider letting you out.

If you need to go through so much hassle getting a phone, you might have to review why you need it and is it worth it. Personally, I don't think any phone is worth downgrading your mum and brother's stuff, spitting out $175 per phone and trying to find buyers to cover your cost.

You'll never get the amount that you need from selling those phones. If you really think you have a chance your just delusional.

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/...-sms-rates-customers-now-free-of-their-contr/

if you on verizon you can get out of your contect now... this was posted beforebut i am too lazy to do a search.

so get out of your contract for free and sell off your phones
9have extra money). sign with cingular now and upgrade (dont know if you can do that though) when the iphone comes out.

but looks like you only have till march 1 this year.

But I already have a messaging service and it says I can't back out if I do.

There is more truth in this quote than I have heard all day

Any plan to switch to Crapgular sucks....

So, so, true. I want to see all these people switching to Cingular come on here after they get their iPhones with posts like "I can't get service!! What am I doing wrong??"

Heres something that you forgot about: You cant get multiple iphones without getting multiple contracts and I seriously doubt there will be a family plan that is compatible with the iphone. iPhones are not sold without contracts and the contract is supposedly going to be tailored to the iphone's functions.

Meaning if you get the iphone then YOU will have to pay the $75+ a month or whatever premium fee they force on you for 2 years and your dad will also have to do the same for his own, then the rest of your family will have to get a seperate family plan. Phone service for your family will probably be over 200 a month after taxes (thats a low estimate). If you have rich parents then that might be fine, if not then you should reconsider your plan untill you get a job and can afford the monthly fee yourself.

If you get the iphone service for yourself through some miracle, you will also have to pay extra money upfront since you dont have a credit rating. They will charge you a deposit that costs well over $100 (you will get this back at the end of the contract). If your dad pays for both iphone services under his name then they will probably waive the deposit fee.

And DO NOT get cingular before the iphone or else you will have to renew your contract (or possibly get a whole new one ontop if its too early, which it most likely will be, which brings you up to 5 monthly fees) and pay even more money. The key is that the iphone is not sold seperately, you either get the iphone with a contract or you dont get the iphone at all, this severely limits your options.

?

There's something fishy here.

From his original post:
Okay, heres the deal. I'm on a family plan with my parents and older brother with Verizon.

From his myspace page:
Now I feels left out because I am one of the only students in my school without a cell phone or a working iPod. My father believes that there is no logical reason for a child to have a cell phone or an MP3 player (after the Mini broke).

Hmmmm. Makes me wonder if he just posted because he wants more hits to his myspace page.

Edited at 5:43 PM More stuff I found from just reading his posts. This has almost become an abnormal obsession, but this kid just pisses me off.

I got a new Shuffle with the green print on the box. It's still unopened. Should I return it and ask for the silver/gray print? I've heard those are more recent.

When I was 11...
the Video iPod came out and I sold my 4g 20gb iPod immediately. However, prices went down a few weeks after it came out and everyone knew about it, so I think it's okay to sell a day or 2 after it comes out.

I'm 13 years old and I bought 30 shares of Apple at $88.38 about a week ago before it went down. I know it went up about $4 the other day, but will it continue to go up?
...
For the people asking where I got the money, I went to the 5th Ave. Apple store at opening, picked up a few shirts and sold them about $80 a piece and sold 2 Nintendo Wiis on eBay.

[rant]
I certainly don't feel pity for a 14 year old who has enough capital to buy 30 shares of Apple stock AND who has owned at least an iPod 4G, Mini, and Shuffle. Especially when he wants other people to pay for his iPhone that he almost certainly doesn't need.

... and this is coming from an Apple shareholder who (usually) wants people to support his company .
[/rant]

This whole thing is fishy and retarded and unnecessary.

Live out the contracts, just get a job and buy yourself a new iPod or ask for it for next Christmas. Get an iPhone in your own name once you're of the age of majority... it'll be multitudes cooler then. You'll be okay.

So, so, true. I want to see all these people switching to Cingular come on here after they get their iPhones with posts like "I can't get service!! What am I doing wrong??"

I was outside of T-Mobile's coverage area earlier this afternoon roaming on Cingular, and trying to make a call reminded me of why I ditched Cingular. The call was dropped 3 times and the sound quality sucks. I soon made it back into T-Mobile territory, called the person I was talking to back, and the quality was crystal clear and it didn't drop once.

I NEED the iPhone when it comes out!
Something tells me this is not true.

And if your profile is correct and you are unemployed, IMHO you need a new phone like you need a hole in your head.

Suggest that you get a Mac first, then proceed to the iPhone. The iPhone will become cheaper over time with better specs (more memory, features, etc.). so there is no need to rush no matter how great it is.

Just my .02!

Something tells me this is not true.

Umm...and what exactly is that?

Anyways, i thought about this and as others have said, it doesn't seem to be a good plan. You'd have to wait for 2008 for a better iPhone or you can try selling it. I'll tell you offhand that this would be hard unless you have a selling price for this product. I have a verizon contract as well but some hackers claim that they'll be able to support other wireless providers. I find it doubtful but who knows.

You have no savings, no job, and parents who are inexplicably willing to dig deep into their own savings and income to make you happy. Yes, you deserve an iPhone and should get one immediately. It's much more important, than for example, your parents saving for your college education or their retirement.

Want a new iPhone...sure.

Need a new iPhone...doubt it.

To me a need is something like the air that you breath, or the food that you must have to live.

I find it hard to believe that someone "needs" a new iPhone. Now don't get me wrong, I think they are cool and personally considering getting one myself. However, that is my personal desire and not a need.

If getting out of a contract was that easy, don't you think everyone would do it? You need at least a utility bill from the new place you've moved to before they would even consider letting you out.

Actually, it is that easy. I've done it, and they didn't ask for proof. (Wasn't Verizon though.)

Personally, I think you should wait. I understand you don't have any patience at 14 but you have to develop patience at some point in your life.

I'm happy my contract with Sprint doesn't end until October so I don't impulsively buy the iPhone. I have to wait until October which will give me enough time to see what, if anything, is wrong with the first iPhone revision.

I may get lucky and Apple may announce a 3G iPhone by that point, too. Waiting isn't always a bad thing. It makes it worth it in the end.
