Apple does has a philosophy. And in the past they haven't had to "race for specs" or features. They have a very loyal following and have great brand recognition. I am not predicting doom for Apple - but one does have to wonder how long they can maintain the way things "always have been" for them and remain competitive. We know they make record profits now and are certainly not hurting. But now they genuinely have greater competition. And people can debate all day how Apple doesn't listen to customers or pay attention to competition - but if you've read any of the court documents, listened to interviews, etc - you'll know that's simply not true. It would also be completely irresponsible to not pay attention to your competition.
Point is - the iPad Mini, larger phone, cheaper phone - these are steps in the right direction. You can argue whether they were inevitable or reactions to competition. But ultimately - Apple is reactive. Which is a GREAT thing. For everyone. No matter what platform you use or prefer.
You really can't win with some people when it comes to Apple. And as much as those want to put the blame on haters and fans of Android - a lot of the internal pissing and moaning comes from forum members who love Apple products. And rightfully so - they are the ones invested.
Agreed - there is obviously a reactive component, though they do plan years in advance so its hard to tell when exactly they began reacting. Samsung is in the enviable position of controlling their supply line whereas it takes a great deal for Apple to work theirs.
The cheaper iPhone and larger iPhone rumors are indeed steps in the right direction. I also think they can do these things and still work within their philosophy.
I'd also say - look at sales numbers, phone-to-phone. While Android as a whole, and even Samsung may "dominate Apple", saturating the market is the primary reason why. If you look at Galaxy line vs iPhone sales, the iPhone is still the king.
It'll be quite interesting to see how the 5C and the iPhone's availability on China's largest telco affect the numbers. Its actually quite shocking Apple's been able to hold any kind of substantial numbers in China without their devices being available to 60% of the country's subscriber base.
