Yes, the consumer should take the responsibility. Duh....No, you are costing Apple the value of one new iPhone back piece and the installation of it. Where do you draw your line on costing others money?

Like I said, Apple has been replacing iPhones for people even with accidental damage. Why blame him when Apple's the one doing this? Apple doesn't have to, but they have been, although I don't know if they're doing that now.

No, you are costing Apple the value of one new iPhone back piece and the installation of it. Where do you draw your line on costing others money? $5? $10? $50?

you know apple is making 200-300% profit on the phone right? it doesnt cost them NEARLY $600 to get the phone out the door, maybe to them around $200-$230.

Chris, I understand your problem and would at least try to return it. What's the worst that can happen? They say no?

I do laugh with you at how serious some people are on this forum :D

Life or death dammit! You are a terrible person whose parents should be banned from every talking to kids! :D:D:D

Some folks here have some issues. Like I said, you honestly think no one has ever returned an iPod with scratches on the back? And the consumer should take responsibility?
Mm. I have a friend who thinks like you. I have to keep reminding myself that people have different upbringing and that I shouldn't do 1 IOTA of soul-searching after one of our whirlwind arguments on ethics. You broke it, you bought it. Category killers like Best Buy have started training consumers very badly, to the point where people were regularly returning things they never bought at that store or the often used "superbowl Sunday" return of the large screen TV.

Enough of that clap trap, though... Let's play Devils Advocate and get you a new phone! So... you say the device has some scratches. That's nothing! I've heard that if you smash the screen, some Apple stores will happily supply you with an entirely new phone for free!

"the Apple store from which she purchased the unit emailed her and replaced it free. Wow. Her quote: "I guess they felt sorry for me."
Engadget:

"the kind folks at Apple apparently replaced the smashed phone for free"

There's you're proof, right there in print. Tonight... hammer, rock... I've heard the side of a table works nicely. Tomorrow at lunch, you'll be at an Apple store and they'll be producing that trademark brown iPhone-replacement box from the back room. By night fall, you'll be breaking in your new phone like you had close and personal access to a Wayback machine! What are you waiting for? Let's get this show on the road. Do it!

Apple's been doing that for pretty much any iPhone issue, probably because it's so new right now. I can't see them replacing any broken iPhone for free a month from now.

Yeah... b-but you agree he might have an easier time of it, if he just took a hammer to his phone, though... right? I mean, a few scratches on the metal, and I'd imagine they might even have him send it in for repair. It's all because they don't have the Apple Care program ready yet. Anyway... I say smash it enough that they get all teary when you bring it in. A good rousing story wouldn't hurt either. Throw some pirates in.

You're just trying to rationalize what you know is wrong. You're saying that iPods have a design flaw and you know about it, so if you buy it, why would you complain and return it because it got scratched?

The situation with the iPhone is NOT the same concept. You were careless and let someone else handle it. You don't want to take responsibility for your actions and just want to claim that Apple should cut you some slack.

Now I know why the people at the Apple Store are so suspicious of damaged goods :D

Like I said, you honestly think no one has ever returned an iPod with scratches on the back? And the consumer should take responsibility? :p The iPod has a design flaw that Apple is still unwilling to change. Hopefully the next revision finally will.

Granted, the iPhone is a different scenario, but its still the same concept.

I don't find it immoral, either. I mean Jesus... I'm getting a new one! It's not like I'm returning it entirely and putting my local Apple store $600 in the red for the day.

Bullcrap

Try to do some thinking on your own instead of reading articles from the media that are copied and pasted all over.

All they claim is that it costs Apple $200-250 to manufacture the iPhone. It does not account for 3 years of R&D, shipping, packaging, marketing and future software updates.

you know apple is making 200-300% profit on the phone right? it doesnt cost them NEARLY $600 to get the phone out the door, maybe to them around $200-$230.

I can't understand why anyone would think they would take back a damaged phone.. I'm not knocking anyone, I just don't even know how that could even be a consideration.. Why would Apple (or anyone) take back something you damaged?..

You know, this thread really disappoints me, but really doesn't surprise me.

People in this country have this virulent sense of entitlement that really at the route of many problems we're having currently.

Look.

YOU DAMAGED THE PHONE IT'S YOUR FAULT

It's not Apple's job to fix your mistakes ... by any stretch of the imagination. Rationalize it all you want. You're the one who ****ed up.

Now if they do, fine. But consider yourself lucky, not entitled to this type of service.

By most of everyone's logic, I should be able to return a washer dryer after it burned up when my house caught fire.

Simply astounding.

You people are crazy.

I still don't understand why, if you think it's in good enough shape to sell to some other unsuspecting consumer, you yourself as an identical consumer can't keep it.

Products returned to stores don't get sent back to the factory, they get sold as "open box" at that same store. So they're not going to replace the back piece that you damaged so they can sell it to someone else for less than retail.

Keep it. Live with it. If you return and rebuy every product you've ever damaged I can officially call you crazy.

And in case this post isn't clear, DON'T attempt to return it. You're not entitled to a new, pristine one. Be more responsible with your stuff.

Yea but if you ask them how much it cost's to replace it they are going to say a couple hundred dollars. But yet it costs them how much for the back? $10? $20? I dont agree with ripping off companys though but like they say in the china shop. "You break it, you bought it"

Are you people missing that fact that Apple has a 14-day return policy?

Try to remove your heads from whatever crevice they are stuck in.

The phone is not damaged. It has a few minor scratches. And the store isn't going to sell the same phone I return to them. Wouldn't that go against Apple's sacred and strict refurbishment policies?

Man, who would've known creating this thread would cause such pain and suffering for some of you folks. I assure you that Apple will be OK!

If the phone is not damaged than you should just keep it.. There's no need to be obnoxious about it.. You dropped your phone on the concrete and you think Apple should just exchange it for one that doesn't have any physical damage because you're "willing" to pay a restocking fee? LOL.. Tell us again who's the one with their "head stuck in a crevice"? .. Kids these days, too funny..

If the phone is not damaged than you should just keep it..

And if it were damaged, I shouldn't bring it back.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

What about that fellow who managed to smash his screen? Why did Apple give him a replacement? Seems like that would just be encouraging needless returns, eh?

did you pay for your iphone with a credit card? if so, you likely have accidental damage insurance for the 1st 90 days and the CC company will pay for the unit to be fixed or replaced. If you don't, make sure you use a card that does have this in the future.

good luck.

one more thing, I would guess that AT&T has an accidental breakage insurance plan for $3-$5 a month. Sounds like a wise investment.

This is vague, but you may be able to just return it.

from the AT&T site:

How do I replace a broken iPhone? Print It
QUESTION:
How do I replace a broken iPhone?
What do I do if my iPhone is damaged?
What is my iPhone warranty?
How can I return an iPhone?
ANSWER:

If your iPhone is broken or damaged, here are the options for replacing it:

* If you believe your iPhone is damaged, you may be eligible for warranty or repair service. Please visit Apple Support for assistance.
* If you have had your iPhone for 14 days or less and wish to return it, please visit the following topic to review the return policy covering iPhone equipment returns and service cancellation: What is AT&T's return policy?

Note: Apple Branded Equipment is covered by a 14-day return policy and must be returned to the original point of purchase (AT&T store where purchased, Apple store where purchased, or Apple online). If the Apple branded equipment is returned unopened and in the original shrink wrapping, it will be refunded back to the original payment method. Opened Apple branded equipment that is returned within 14 days will be subject to a 10% open box restocking fee. All products must be packed in their original, unmarked packaging including any accessories and manuals that shipped with the product.

I just checked, and as of now the iphone is ineligible for accidental damage insurance.

so, return it or get your credit card company to pay for it.

NOpe they will not...call your Credit card company if u paid with one.. they may be able to help

I don't consider it "damaged" seeing as how the product still works flawlessly.

If you don't consider it damaged then there is no reason to return it, but you want to return it because it is damaged. I'd try return it as well, but that's because I'm a weasel with no sense of personal responsibility.
