Will the OnePlus 5T be a iPhone X rival?

Today I saw some leaked pictures of the not yet released OnePlus 5T.
It is very likely to get a 'full screen design', and some rumors even talk about something like FaceID and a waterproof casing.
Could it be a budget iPhone X alternative or even a rival?
 
If you see yourself using Android I would say yes, If you want to stick with iOS I would say no.

OnePlus users tend to be driven by value, bang for the buck. Apple users tend to be more premium oriented, more luxury side of things. So I'm not sure they would go OnePlus.

I see a iphone users going to a Samsung instead of a Oneplus, give a couple hundred bucks for a few more features and design and refinement

So you buy phones based on who has the best marketing and word-of-mouth hype?

I can understand design being a major factor for buying a phone, but buying a phone based on who has the biggest marketing budget and what people are talking about? Really?

Just because Apple or any other company has been able to spend big bucks on marketing or because there is a hype about a product, which will eventually die down, doesn't mean that product is any better than another product.

The question was, can the OnePlus 5T rival the iPhone X? The only real measure of being a rival is sales.

I think it's quite clear a lot of people buy phones because of the two things, yes. It's why Apple puts out the best ads, and why Samsung pours so much into good advertisement as well. It's the very reason Samsung took the opportunity to bash the iPhone in ads a few years back, because people react to that kind of stuff. The talk about Apple for the past several years is how they are behind on tech, so are people really buying because of the tech? The general consumers, not tech nerds or MacRumors posters, largely buy iPhone because it is an iPhone. I'm a big iPhone fan and have carried one for the last ten years, but they win with their marketing and hype, and not because they have the latest tech, and there is nothing wrong with that.

You aren't all of a sudden going to find a bunch of people carrying a OnePlus 5T because it is a OnePlus or a 5T. There is a very narrow niche market for that device that will not rival the iPhone.

Some people (also that I know) buy the newest iPhone just beacuse it is from Apple...
That won't happen with the 5T, since there is no :apple: on the back.

Ah, we both interpreted the question differently. I interpreted the rivalry question in terms of the actual product itself whilst your interpretation of rivalry was in terms of sales. But yes, I agree with your interpretation of rivalry in terms of sales - marketing and word-of-mouth does generate the sales and the likes of OnePlus rivalling Apple are a lot slimmer because of, in part, Apple's reputation and budget.

Not sure what you mean by rival exactly. I think people who prefer iOS will look towards the X, maybe those who prefer Android (if that's what it runs), they'll look towards the OnePlus.
 
With the death of the Nexus One Plus took the hacker phone mantel, I'm not sure its all that advisable to compare those two.

Well, I have to disagree on all points here. First device that replaced iPhone for me was OnePlus 1. Samsung couldn't do it, HTC couldn't do it, etc. But OnePlus did. Was it the price? Nope. It was speed. Plain and simple.

OP5 is a fantastic device already. If someone wants to try out near stock android, OP 5 is the way to go. Cheap, great build quality, unrivalled speed (even for iPhone), great little customizations that make life really easier.

At the moment I'm using Note 8, and this is the first Samsung device ever that I don't hate after 2-3 days of using it. Great phone.

It’ll be an alternative, but OnePlus will find a way to mess something up like they do every year.

Rival in quality? Maybe not. Note8 is still the best even if it tends to sell lower than the Galaxy S.

Rival as in a cheaper alternative? Sure.

Guess we will find out when the 5T is released if it is a better cheaper alternative, currently the Essential is quite the current attractive (pun intended) alternative for $499. It’s size and weight is the closest one will get to the iPhone x currently.
 
The One Plus 5T is looking like the best bang for the buck this year. Considering the battery life is just as good, and there are no major issues.
 
OnePlus is more of a rival to Pixel as it's taking over the old Nexus price range.

Paying $650 for a Google Pixel wasn't worth it for me even though I loved the device for the first five months until Oreo. Imagine $1200 for iPhone X? Anybody could have bought a $400 OnePlus 3 w/ 6GB RAM and not miss a thing. Oxygen OS is fluid too.

Neither brands sell beyond 4M. So OnePlus 5T looks more to be a rival and great alternative if you find the Pixel 2 / 2 XL too expensive and don't care updating software beyond two major ones.

OnePlus is a Galaxy, LG, Google Pixel, Motorola competitor. iPhone owners want the ecosystem, a trendy phone, grossly simplified experience, etc. Technically it can compete with the X, but it is a vastly different phone since it offers near stock Android with customization. Apple lacks a basic theme engine as well.

As someone who's owned (and got rid of) both the OnePlus 3T and a OnePlus 5, my answer to the original question is "Oh bloody Hell no!".

While the hardware looks and is nice on the spec sheet, I just can't bring myself to trust their software anymore. The way they handled the Secure Box case and got caught with their pants down regarding excessive analytics, they've gone permanently into the NOPE category for me.

Makers of these "funny" images should actually do their part of fact-checking before publishing BS. While there are valid points, it seems like they haven't read a thing about iOS 11 and CoreNFC, which negates the "Apple Pay only" part of iPhone's NFC. Granted, CoreNFC is still restricted and not quite what I wished for, but stating that NFC in the iPhone X is Apple Pay only is just plain incorrect, no way around it.

NFC is neutered on iPhones, so it will be used mainly for Apple Pay for the average user.

BTW, the S8 is thicker than the iPhone X so the S8 must be inferior to the S6?
