Nice rig Barry, but it' s no MP :)
A lot cheaper than the nMP, better specs, go for it if that's your thing.
Thing is, will you be supported if anything goes AWOL?

Yeah, I know it's not a MacPro. I can tell that in a number of ways;

1. I can buy it now.
2. It doesn't cost the same as small family car.
3. It has the parts in it that I want and has significantly more CPU power than anything Apple sells.

If Apple would sell me a computer that had anything remotely like these specifications, I would buy it. But they won't. So I can't. So that's that.

If by AWOL you mean 'breaks' yes, of course. It's coming from a reputable company in the UK called scan. (scan.co.uk) and their coverage is pretty good. Also gonna get 9 months interest free on this, so that's cool too.

Those are the 2 points that blind apple fanatics keep missing/ignoring.

That's a great build and I would say, it is a smarter choice.

Maybe you miss the point that NOBODY care about YOUR needs, apart from yourself?

Why complain about a computer that does not fulfill your needs? I never will understand that. Use what fulfill your needs and never turn back. Simple as that.

koyoot, it seems the better performance of 390 compared to 290 is mostly due to more mem, and higher clocks.
As you go up to 5K and 8K only the cards with a bunch of mem really stand out, leaving even the Fury X out in the dust.
I'm not sure there is really any optimization going on here, but I guess we'll have to wait and see the reviews.

Barry, don't think I was criticizing or anything, you are correct of course. Apple gear is mostly overpriced for the specs, and there's no denial about it. I'm glad there are other options out there and at a much better value no doubt, like the one you mention.
If you're an (unfortunate) Apple aficionado then you get the under-speced over-priced stuff, if not you go with the best compromise you can get, and there are a lot of options these days.

I hate the way Windows goes, I'm a bit tired of the DIY way and Apple was something of a controlled environment but in fact I'm also not liking the way OS X is going either, and surely not the way Apple only focuses on wearable gadgets these days.
So, I'm kinda waiting to see where it all goes...

Wut. That's exactly what he said.

Wut.

Manuel, then I think you should see a little more ;). Clock-to-clock R9 290X gets less points in 3dMark. 390X gets 7% better scores with clock-to-clock comparison between those two GPUs.

BarryLegg, saying that people using Apple hardware are blind is a bit... I will not end.

I have to agree, a lot of people complain but nobody is forced to buy Apple stuff.
I too believe that it's expensive stuff but still I don't keep bashing their products, I'm still on for a nMP although, like I said, the road they're taking isn't the one I would like.
Still, nMP is a perfect machine for me so far. Expensive, considering the hardware inside (I think nobody will refute that) but still, an amazing piece of engineering and art.
Of course, those who need a better machine might need to go look elsewhere.

I'll have to wait for the reviews to see where that comes from. This week there should be some info coming out.
So, what do you think changed, was it only a process optimization?
Cause the word is that there is no change in the GPU's layout.
It's even identified as Hawaii.

BarryLegg, saying that people using Apple hardware are blind is a bit... I will not end.

He didn't say that. He said there are people who blindly deny that it's a problem. And that is stupid. I've read people - journalists - making the case that this machine offers everything that anyone could want and that is just a crazy, crazy denial of the truth or at least a very blinkered, uninformed view.

Problem is only for those who view it as a problem. Only problem what I have with Mac Pro is that it is underpowered to price it costs. I would like to have Haswell EP, with DDR4, and Grenada GPUs inside, and new, faster SSD, for the same price. That would satisfy myself. I don't have it, but I don't view it as a problem. And I don't complain about it on forums. See the difference?

What do people think of this build?

in other words, you're uninformed?
i mean, i'll go ahead and guess if you were informed, you wouldn't have to ask if x-computer is good for y-software, right?

Don't know how readable this is, and sorry if it screws up the page formatting.

What do people think of this build? It's for Maya and Maxwell Render / V-Ray.

GPU is a little underpowered but hey, I can upgrade later.

Thoughts?

<edit> It's not entirely clear from the image but that is TWO processors in this build. That's not £1500 for a single 8core CPU!

With the money you looking to spend I'd go with HP or Dell their warranty and service on work stations and servers blows everyone out of the water.

No, I'm informed. I was looking to get the opinions of others who may be 3D artists, and not two-bit snark merchants. But hey-ho; I guess - like MacPro customers - you take what you get.

koyoot, everything you want (readily available, you just have to wait :)
Maybe Apple will make your wish come true soon enough!!
I say they'll wait for Broadwell, but then again the change from Haswell to Broadwell is slight, you should be able to upgrade later, if Apple let's you that is :)
Still, seeing R9 Nano now this would be a welcome GPU in nMP, powerful, small, not that power hungry and quiet - what else could you ask for.
I'm still curiois as to the final GPU lineup for nMP: 2 Antiquas (Pro and XT) and 1 Grenada - not likely as it doesn't follow the Dx00 lineup.
Or 1 Antiqua (Pro or XT, or even more likely a mix - Full XT but with only 256 bit mem interface, as M295X) and 2 Grenada (or even Fiji based?).

Stop arguing about Barry's config already, he just wanted an opinion, one can give it or if not, at least don't make an argument out of it.
It seems people in this forum are always picking fights for whatever reason...

I have no idea about that type of workstations, so I have shut mu mouth up ;).

About the Mac Pro. AMD Radeon Fury is a 3840 GCN core chip that will equal the performance of Titan X(Fury X will be around 15-20% faster), but I dont think we will see it in Mac Pro. Its too power hungry IMO to even try to squeeze it to 125W. Fury Nano, with between 3072 and 3584 GCN cores is completely different level. Im pretty sure, that people wanting new retina iMac should wait, because that is the chip we will see in mobile from AMD. And in the next iMac.

Well, one can dream, tho ;). A Mac Pro, with Haswell CPU, DDR4, fast SSD, and a double AMD Radeon Fury Nano inside. That would be hell of a lot computer...

what opinion of mine would you like to hear? I'm pretty positive I'm the most talented 3D modeler here.. maybe a bit arrogant to say that but it doesn't make it less true.

but really, it's the software that matters and how well you can use the software. I do about 25% of my design work on a dual-core i7 mbp from 2010.. it's not optimum but capable nonetheless.

I know this is a Mac forum, but could the people that blindly follow Apples roadmap please refrain from commenting on other peoples builds/wants/needs unless its positive, your blatant bias and Apple worship is obvious to all. Try and think outside the square(Apple) for once in your life....
Good call Baz!

Im quoting myself, because I've just seen an interview with AMD guy that worked on AMD Fury. He was asked about the Nano, and he said that the GPU itself will not be "that" cut down version of Fury, but rather the performance will be defined by thermal and power circumstances. In other words, sometimes depending on the temperature, and game you will be able to get higher framerates up to Fury X ranges and in others not.

3584 GCN core chip clocked at 900 MHz would get 6.5 TFLOPs of compute power. Not bad at all... Almost the power of dual D700...

get real.
he's posting in a mac forum asking about 3rd party software and off-topic hardware (ie- very very low on the "most informative place i should seek opinions on this subject" list)... calling the majority of people here stupid.. crazy, crazy.. blind.. uninformed.. etc..

and you're saying "be positive"? why? dude's just trolling and doesn't even realize it.. (well, admits it subconsciously but won't let it go further than that)

no.. but the difference is i admit my reason for posting at him is to argue him and/or his opinions.

whereas he won't admit the reason for him to post this stuff is to start an argument.. instead poses as he's looking for help from artists :/

you see that, right?

Nope I dont see it, he posted something and granted he should have started his own thread. All I read was 2 or 3 of you jump on him because he dared to pick PC parts, it looks to me that you guys started the argument. Anyhow please get back on topic.
