Have you guys been living under a rock? imac, air, macbook have been in the Mac news site headlines daily this week. Even new ones today. Mostly about the retina displays, but still in the news and non one here is any more of an authority one way or the other, than any one else outside Apple.

You mean after I made that post? Yes, my post did not also account for any events that may happen in the future. Sorry.

The Mac Pro is tied up in the NVidia rumors, if you didn't notice.

And all of these numerous stories come from two sources.

1. this forum about geekbench results found of what looks like a new iMac and a new MBP.

2. a story from 9to5 a couple of hours later about slimmed down MBPs.

Here is my full analysis

Make of that what you will, but it’s quite funny to once again see rumours emanating from source A, then being cited by B and then A using B’s citation of their original rumour as validation.

So let’s cut through the chaff.

There are basically three main points here that everyone is regurgitating:

  • USB 3
  • NVIDIA GPU
  • Retina Display

USB 3 – confirmed via plist reportedly in the ML code. Without seeing the snippet personally, it’s impossible to confirm, but this is a fairly logical one. I think we can be fairly confident of this happening.

NVIDIA GPU – again, just like the above it’s difficult to confirm that the code being cited exists without seeing it personally. Considering the work NVIDIA has been doing in terms of drivers for OSX that you can download and use with a Mac Pro (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1360927/), then this could well be a reality since they wouldn’t be writing drivers for xxxxs and giggles.

Retina Display – The high resolution icons in ML do suggest that this will happen sometime in the future. However, don’t forget that high resolution icons were already found last year when Lion was released to devs. I think this is the least likely to happen out of the 3 main points, but may be a possibility.

The sub-points are:

  • Firewire ports?
  • Ethernet ports?

The rumours around the ports being gone are based on this paragraph
9to5mac said:
The current prototype unibody casings going through test production have spaces for a charging port, two USB ports, two audio in/out-sized ports, and the battery meter on the left side. The right side is said to have cutouts for two Thunderbolt-sized ports, an SD card slot, and another USB port. Notably, these prototype unibodies lack room for Ethernet (Apple sells adapters since the MacBook Air lacks an Ethernet port). We’re unsure about Firewire but that could also be gone.

Considering Apple's penchant for (what they think is) simplicity, the reduction of ports could happen. We can all argue that these ports are important or not. There are adaptors out there and more are coming. Sure, adaptors may not be as handy to use as having the port, but it is what it is. Looking at NAB 2012, the professional video and audio device manufacturers are embracing Thunderbolt with both hands. TB is also coming to the PC.

Whatever we get in the latest refresh there will be interesting and exciting times ahead with joy, trepidation, gnashing of teeth and, of course, the mandatory "is my computer running too hot?" threads.

What a beautiful post!, insightful, engaging, informative, and fun, are you a creative? if not you should be. I bet you run an ad agency....fantastic! :)

I'm just impatient, ocd, whatever. I hope my posts here don't offend anyone because it's really just frustration with the slow pace of technology in the high end from my personal point of view. Quite frankly I don't care where the rumors come from. We all know there is a new imac and macbook pro coming. What we are less certain of is what the story is for mac pro. At this stage I'm equally as interested in what the highest end imac will have, not that I wouldn't much rather have a top of the line MP, but I won't be at all surprised if Apple cuts the rope and tries to shift us over so I'm trying to get mentally prepared because I don't want windows and I don't want hackintosh. In any case a lot of you guys seem to have much more faith in Apple with regard to this than I do anymore. Something just doesn't smell right about all this to me. Posting makes me feel better.

Maybe, but I didn't see one single product announcement as an audio interface for Thunderbolt. Did I miss something? I wish they would. I'm tired of firewire in general.

Sorry, I meant NAMM for the audio guys. Quite a lot of stuff announced.

The rumors seem plausible...

"USB 3 – confirmed via plist reportedly in the ML code. Without seeing the snippet personally, it’s impossible to confirm, but this is a fairly logical one. I think we can be fairly confident of this happening."

^ Makes complete sense to me. Right direction for the company.

"NVIDIA GPU – again, just like the above it’s difficult to confirm that the code being cited exists without seeing it personally. ^ I think this is the main concept around which WWDC will be focused on. This and iOS/Mac integration etc. I think the logo for WWDC is, and has been, fairly obvious. Again... right direction for the company.

Apple is all about brand placement in technological timelines. They would be way ahead of the competition by implementing the retina display across the board. Consumers will be enthralled. It's all a part of what makes the Apple brand so "addictive" - for lack of a better word. When they design or improve on a product... they go balls to the wall with it and I think this will be no different.

IMO, and it's just that - an opinion, these rumors appear legit. I think the retina display is VERY likely because it is VERY compelling to the average consumer. This type of thought process is what separates Apple from most of the other brands out there. If it's not imagination... it's innovation. They have a SOLID foundation now in which they will be more willing to take risks like this. I know from a technological standpoint... it's gonna be tough to get retinas across the whole line up but if any company can do it... it's Apple.

As far as the Mac Pro goes... I think they'll wipe out the current line up and replace with a new "brand" of Mac Pro some time in the fall.
But that's real tough to predict right now. We ARE all in the dark and Apple IS aware of it. With no news right now... the future of the Mac Pro DOES appear dismal.

You're probably a fun guy to have a beer with, very positive.

I'm much to cynical to have the same outlook you do.

That's actually a damn good point about the logo. I had another look at it now, because I wasn't paying attention initially, and I see what you mean. I am going to steal this and spread a rumour. :)

I don't think the Mac Pro is endangered. There are still delays around the Sandy Bridge Xeon CPUs. To me it's fairly obvious that Apple is not run by incompetent people. These people realise the ecosystem they need to keep going like they have been.

Lots of people cite that Apple only care about the iToys now. Somebody needs to create that content that makes the iToys so compelling. The Mac Pro makes a serious business case for itself in this regard and I don't think it will be axed.

lol thx dude! Funny enough... with everything else in life... I'm about as cynical as they come. As far as Apple goes... I'm on the "Hope" train right now. heh

I said screw it and built a hackintosh, why bother with windows when you can do that?

OK, I see the Symphony ThB box, firmly in the "coming soon" category, though, no ETA. And the Apollo's ThB port coming this summer.

I found nothing else.

Apogee and Universal Audio both over $2000!!

When I can get something with TB along the lines of my Profire 2626 at under $1000, then maybe . . . (assuming I have a TB port by then that is)

Well, for one the nagging suspicion that my software may work better on Win7. If I were to build my next workstation (and that is certainly something to consider) I wouldn't bother with a Hackintosh. What for?

The way I see the future unfold is Apple for the iDevices, TV and maybe a laptop, and Windows (or Linux hopefully, by then) for the bespoke workstation.

1. If you feel your software works better under windows then why are you even bothering waiting?

2. For me I like OSX a million times better than windows, hackintosh installation is no more difficult than a windows installation, so I really do not see a point in using windows when I can build a stable mac system for myself.

I come back to this forum now and then mainly to see if GoMac is still insisting that MacPros will live forever...and that we will see one "any day" now.

As sure as there will be a new "Is the MPro dead" thread every few days...its equally likely you'll find GoMac posting away right in the heart of it.

It never fails to tickle me. :D

1. Who said I am waiting? I'm content with my '09 MacPro, I can still do the firmware hack and drop in a hexacore which should keep me going for a while. But if the MacPro is discontinued I have no qualms about using Windows for my professional needs.

2. I like OSX better, too, but I would not want to depend on a Hackintosh professionally, especially not with the direction Lion and Mountain Lion are taking. Gatekeeper and the App Store to rule them all. If SnowLeopard is no longer supported by the latest versions of my software, I don't see how I'd keep a Hackintosh running.

I was thinking the same thing today... maybe I'm going to setup a Windows Workstation at work, I can get a powerful workstation for around 1500$. Mostly everything is in the cloud these days, all the major apps are on both platforms, I can even have 1password in sync and my and I can use my Mac Books for Apple life. I think this is where Apple is pushing us. That way I have all the hardware features I want. Sometimes I sit down at my staff's workstations which are all Windows 7 and it's not bad at all... pretty fast to jump back and forth between stuff. Very responsive. Apple ran for the money and totally bailed on us.... it sucks. Maybe we will start to see Dell's instead of Macs in TV and movies now... haha

Already have. All the monitors in The Avengers are all Dell. I ordered an HP 820 workstation with E5 2.7 gig 16 core processors last week. Suppose to get it in another 6 days. I'm Glad I did. Hundreds of more plugins for Lightwave, and top end video cards. I'm over the loyalty thing. Lets it face Apple sold out, and seems to be sticking it to the pro. I'm finished with them!

Good for you!

I'm not so sure Apple "sold out" or that the MacPro is finished, but brand loyalty should not be a factor in a professional purchase decision.

Most of my workflow is not available for Windows, so I'm stuck waiting.

Buying a new laptop this year as well, so at least I have the Macbook Pro rumors to be excited about.
