I just hope they bring the two models out at the same time.

I want the larger but I don't want to be tempted by the smaller.
I've been working on a mid-2011 21.5" for the past... well, ten years. I do use a secondary display, but I've never found it all that limiting. Mind you, this is a 1080p screen. Were it a 5K display, would that make everything... smaller? I mean, obviously text, dock, icon sizes, etc. can all be adjusted.

If I'm comfortable with 21.5", I figured going with the 24" and one of the upcoming displays would be more than enough for me. But working with photo and video, am I going to see any practical difference as far as my actual workspace is concerned? Or have I simply been depriving myself the luxury of the larger display?

Yes you have. Once you go big screen you don't want to go back. It takes a bit to get used to it but then everything is just too small. I got my 30 ACD in 2008 and had it till 2012 where I sold it as I had to travel a lot. Got rMBP 15" and hated the screen size ever since. Now that I'm a bit more stationary, I have 2017 MBP + extra screen but I hate the setup so I literally can't wait for the updated iMac OR if Apple does their own display that is not crazy expensive, I might consider the mini + display :)

I salute you for keeping the computer so long. I love people not buying stuff just to have the latest and only update when its needed. This is way more sustainable so you have a big compliment here. :)

Unfortunately, for me there is no computer that would be fast enough. Its never ending loop but for now my work provides a computer so that part is sorted. Anyway, big display is just better in almost every way. Give it a try, you won't regret it : )

Ok guys, given the recent info about DTK I'm now convinced that no new macs until WWDC.
Seeing that they voucher Apple gives expires on 31st May I think its an indication that we won't see anything before that.

So in addition to their 32" OLED 4K monitor (the 32EP950), LG also has just announced a companion 27" 4K OLED monitor - the 27EP950.

I expect it will still be too expensive for Apple to use in an iMac and it would not be Retina (though it would be 163 ppi so not terrible), but it does raise interesting possibilities down the road if the pricing gets cheaper...

As much as I love my OLED TV, I don’t think it is a good choice for a monitor due to too much potential for burn in as monitors are more likely to have static content. The image retention on my iMac is bad enough, burn in would be horrible.

No bloody OLED in monitors! No way, that junk has no place in monitors tech. :p

Don’t know if it’s just me, but I’d be really happy with an iMac stand like this...

I’d be really happy if the rumour of more connectivity and ports on future MacBook Pro extended to the new iMac.

Hah, it's been needed for quite a while. My 512MB of VRAM and I have been suffering through our 4K workflows. It's actually quite horrendous. Considering how long I held on to this machine, I want to make sure I line myself up with the right one for the next decade. Maxing out an AS iMac is the plan... so what's another six months to wait?

Absolutely, I wish more people would be like you. Maybe not so extreme but the general idea.
We consume way too much and way too often. :)
Lets wait it out together so you can finally get something that will last you at least another 5-7 years minimum :)

Apple, i think, already showed us how the mac transition will go for release..
So, they will release every mac with the same SoC...so expect 14" mbp with the 24" imac (probably named M1X)
And the 16" with the bigger imac or so (probably named M2)
Its clear Apple wants to clean up the cpu options that they had with the Intel....mac mini, macbook air/pro all has M1

my 2010 iMac is overdue to be pensioned off!
We've just replaced our 2010 iMac 2.93ghz with two 2020 iMacs ... a 3.3 Ghz i5 and a 3.8 Ghz i7 ...

I couldn't be bothered to wait and the Geekbench scores on both for multi core are great with 64 Gb Ram (bought afterwards) ... 6900 for the 3.3 i5 and 8900-9000 for the 3.8 i7. My M1 MBA does 7600 multi core so we are more than happy ... and our work underuses the existing CPU's anyway.

I think when the new iMac arrives it will destroy most other normal things on Geekbench ... but will be far more than we need (not that that's stopped me changing before).

We are selling our 2010 iMac 27" as it is still in great condition and will make someone a good computer.

Nice. I do agree with you that the new one will be crazy fast but I would disagree with the second part of the sentence that "more than we need".
Sure, the pure power will be more than you need but the beauty of the AS is not really in speed but the responsiveness and agility of the system. Basically, its the little things that make it awesome.
No beach ball on basic tasks etc.

So yeah, the raw power will be unused in your case (most likely) but these little things will make the experience way better than the 2020 iMac.

Either way, I'm sure you are happy with 2020. In 2030 there will be something more awesome so lets see then :)

I get what you say and expect I will be dribbling when a new one appears ... in the meantime my i7 with a Geekbench score 1500 more than my M1 MBP is very enjoyable .... as well, obviously as the lovely screen :)

It would be cool if they could put 2 M1s in an iMac. Plenty of performance and they don't have to develop a new chip, they can use the same design in multiple devices, just the number of chips and smaller tweaks(like the slower macbook air variant of m1) would differentiate each product and performance.

A reasonable idea, but not practical. Dealing with multiple cores have a programming overhead that is often overcome by only using one core. Multiple chips would be a whole lot worse to program for, with the added problems of losing the benefit of unified memory, and bandwidth lost to chips spreading work to each other.

Adding more CPU and GPU cores to a chip is a lot easier than multiple chips. Apple already has chip variants for iOS and iPadOS, they are just going to be more varied for macOS.

Although it sounds cool it would be a bad idea. It would basically mean, that Apple 'cant' innovate for the "big boys" and I would personally take it as a failure. M1 is mobile low end chip and Apple can't just add more of those to the mid and upper range. Intel would be having a laugh! There needs to be PRO AS and PRO GPU. Otherwise this transition would end in a disaster.
So, no - this is not the way.

Shouldn't the rumour mill pick up its pace if we are really getting it in few weeks? March is around the corner and yet there is no mention about an event of any kind. Perhaps we will be delayed till April?

I figured you were on the right track with the DTK credits indicating no new Macs till WWDC––especially with the rumour mill running silent. What's changing your mind?

I haven't changed my mind. But if we are expecting March/April event of any kind (iPad Pros etc.) then if its in March then we should start hearing about possible invitation? Usually we get these rumours around a month or so before the event so either we are towards the end of march or we are going to April.
Usually, I'm not a fan of Jan&Feb as nothing is happening :)

And yes, for the big iMac I think WWDC makes the most sense as they will want to talk about Lifuka and WWDC would be a great platform for that as Devs will want to involved :)

Now the talks are remote, official announcements are only about a week before because there is no need for more notice so journalists can make travel arrangements. And rumours are often less than a week before we hear officially.

Also hardware leaks are generally more common for iPhone (easier to sneak one out of the production line, plus there is more interest) than Macs.

I'd love to hear of iMacs is March, although I'm doubtful. But if we do, it could be any time in the month, so might not even hear about an announcement until mid-March.

I'm hopefully they offer a matching external display at the same time, the rumored 'budget' apple display option. While I'm set with my 2020 intel iMac for the forceable future, I'd love to upgrade my sidecar 12.9 iPad to a larger option.
