I didn't like the comment about only 1 Mac now left to transition: The Mac Pro. So no big iMac?
iMac 27 is gone from the site. Doubt we will see larger iMacs again. We were all wrong.
Maybe the iMac Pro wasn't part of the transition, so they can re-introduce it at any later point in time. Or never at all.

Yup! Very interesting. First that comment about how they only had one Mac left to announce in the transition, and now the removal from the site. I guess they are assuming people who want big screens and Pros want modularity of their machines? Kind of smart model. And a general purpose consumer all-in-one.

I'm kind of surprised that the high-end Intel Mac mini options are still standing.

I believe we will - but it will be like the Intel iMac Pro and have a truly beastly base configuration and price to match.

But the days of a "cheap and cheerful" 27" iMac are dead. That market is now served by the iMac (24").

And the more-powerful iMac 5K BTO configs are now the realm of Mac Studio and the Studio Display.

I guess that kind of makes sense now there's a standalone display and a highly powerful mini desktop available. None of us seemed that sure about how they were going to brand the iMac lineup if they were going to introduce a "Pro" model - would they then offer the various configuration options to the smaller iMac?

This way there's the consumer iMac which is the default Mac desktop for most people who just want a machine to do general productivity stuff and then for everyone else you can get a Studio. Which also sounds about right given the step up in power and efficiency the M1 gives over the previous Intel chips. That normal iMac is a very nice and capable machine.

I guess Apple have all the sales stats to show how many people went for the larger screen iMacs and in what configurations. I guess they're assuming that those who wanted a powerful desktop will be tempted by the Studio and the new display instead.

After the specific language they used about what's still to come, I don't think we will see a return of the iMac Pro, at least not for a couple of years.

Remember that the iMac Pro, while a great machine, was a bit of a "stop-gap" from Apple until the Mac Pro was available, so it wouldn't surprise me if they just drop it. Especially when you look at the size of the studio and how much cooling they have in there for the more powerful chips. Maybe to do that in an iMac would lead to too many compromises - i.e. a much thicker housing?

I also think there will be a new iMac Pro eventually. But it will be expensive and a real pro machine. And it will take a while. Maybe with that long wished for 32" MiniLED display.
I ordered the full Studio package today and I think I will more than happy with it.

Sad to see 27" iMac gone as the price was always better than separate mac + display but in the long term it will be cheaper. This way we get Mac studio and Studio display and then we will be upgrading just the mac.
What they showed today was amazing. The display could have been cheaper though. Around $1299 would be much better but this will have to do too.

On the one hand, I do agree it seems superfluous with today's announcement of the Mac Studio and Apple Studio Display, but why does Kuo (and others) say there will be an iMac Pro, just not till 2023 instead of 2022?

And where does the 27" MiniLED ProMotion 5K display Young said was coming to an iMac Pro go?

It was not in the Apple Studio Display so either they release an "Apple Studio Display Pro" next year with it - and destroy their relationship with everyone who bought the ASD - or it appears in an iMac Pro and that machine serves as the AIO companion to the Apple silicon Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR Mk. II (likely now at 7K with MiniLED).

Yes, it is a pity the display price is not further below what a base 27" iMac was.

Then again, if the base iMac 5K had come with a 12MP webcam with center stage and six speakers with Spatial Audio and the T2 was swapped out with an A13, it would likely have been at least $1999 vs. $1799...

The thing is that the Studio display doesn't seem to be anything special so why is the price tag so high?
The LG 27" was $1299 and afaik this is basically the same thing with just Apple enclosure and A chip controller.
They should have kept it at $1299 or maybe $1399 and it would be more reasonable

Well day one jumper on the display and the new Mac Studio. Been waiting for three years for a replacement for my nearly decade old iMac. It's gotten to the point where it's impacting my workflow so it was time. Sad because the AIO iMac is so nice, but 24" is way too small for my usage.

Yeah, it is the 27" UltraFine with these additional features:
- (Probably) pretty good speakers (for a display)
- 12 MP webcam
- Aluminium enclosure
- A13 chip which enables center stage and spatial audio

I mean, yes it could be cheaper but if you take the $1299 from the UltraFine as a base it is not completely ridiculous to land at $1599.

I look at it this way.

For $300 more over the LG UltraFine 5K, the Apple Studio Display offers me:
  1. 100% macOS integration (LG's are somewhat notorious for not fully playing nice with macOS)
  2. Far better image quality (Apple does much better out-of-the-box calibration than LG does)
  3. Far better build quality (aluminum vs. plastic)
  4. Far better end-user-support (listen to Casey Liss' recent saga getting his LG UF 5K repaired on ATP)
  5. A 12MP webcam with Center Stage
  6. A six-speaker audio system with Spatial Audio support

I guess thats valid too. Btw, is the adjustable stand the same as the PRO stand? They look very similar/identical but there is a big price difference. Do you know?

From all the video I've seen the display looks very low so either I'll put a box underneath it to raise it or I just bite the bullet and pay more so its more user friendly for multiusers :)

I think it is a different but similar stand which is tuned for the different weight of the Studio Display.

Just put the display on the Mac Studio. ?
I ordered the Vesa mount version and will get a Vesa arm for 60€. Wanted to do that either way.

The Studio display and screen are lower than the iMac. It is difficult to know by how much the screen is as the bezel size of the new display is unknown. I'm happy it is lower, and would prefer a little more. I have an HP Z27k G3 as a second display alongside my iMac. Set to the right height, it is about 1cm lower than the Studio display, but the Studio has much larger bezels, so the screen height will not be far off what I want (the iMac is 3cm too high).

Strangely, the minimum height with the adjustable stand is 1mm higher than with the fixed stand. The height adjustment is great if you want to go higher, which you could also do with a riser platform, but useless if you want to go lower, with nothing that can be done about it. I noticed in the keynote that several users had the Studio display too high for correct ergonomics (eyes should be level with the top of the screen).

Agree.

I have been patiently waiting to replace my 27" iMac for years, first waiting for a rumored new form factor then later the upgrade to Apple silicon.

I just placed an order for the Mac Studio and Studio Display. :)

Yeah, I don't think I need it lower but higher. I'm tall person and even on the Apple presentation it showed that they had it too low. Will have to go and see it in person. Overall, the display looks very tiny. Kinda gives the impression that its 24" rather than 27" :)
