Did anyone truly believe that the only iMacs Apple would offer would be a $1600 24" and a $5000+ 27" Pro (Canadian dollars)? Apple is well aware of what makes money for them and what doesn't.
What are you talking about? I was talking about the display that is rumored.
Why is this better than an all in 1 Imac?

Looks odd too me.
Who said it was better than an iMac? I just said it's great that the Mac Studio and display are coming tomorrow.

Do many people do that rather than use an all in one?

In the macOS world, not so much because the only way to get a Retina display in a desktop form factor was iMac or the UltraFine 5K (until the Pro Display XDR shipped and that was too expensive for most).

However, the UF5K did not have the additional calibration that Apple does for the iMac 5K (and I expect will do for the Studio Display) and it had it's own quirks that hopefully Apple will iron out with the Studio Display.

But since the Apple Studio Display will be the same Retina 5K as the iMac 5K, it now becomes a more-affordable option.
Good point. We will have to see what the new prices are as a combined package.

Are Apple pushing us that way so that they will upgrade more often in future by making it cheaper?

btw. Is the thinking that there will not be a new 27 in. iMac tomorrow?

My mistake. Apply my comment then to all those who insist the 27" will only be a Pro model.
I don't think anyone implied the only option for the 27" iMac would be a pricey Pro model. There was talk that maybe the iMac Pro would start at ~$2,500 but now that it is probably coming in 2023 I imagine we are getting a non-Pro 27" iMac sooner than later.

We all have been so focused on the iMac Pro for months now that the idea of a non-Pro 27" iMac hasn't really been kicked around because we just assumed the iMac Pro would take its place. However now that it appears the iMac Pro is not coming until 2023, it means that Apple will most likely replace the 27" iMac given it is still an Intel machine of course.

However there has been zero leaks about a non-Pro 27" iMac to date. So if this machine is coming and when is a total mystery at this point. Could come tomorrow. WWDC. October. It's anyone's guess.

I honestly do not know at this point.

Ross Young says a 27" 5K MiniLED ProMotion panel is coming to an iMac, so I am guessing that will be the "iMac Pro".

Whether that means the only 27" iMac form factor will be the "iMac Pro" or if there will be a cheaper 27" iMac with the current 5K edge-lit display is something we might find out tomorrow or we might find out at WWDC.

I think no mac 27 tomorrow, and Studio will be the star of the show with the budget-ish27 5k display.

I wonder if current 27 in mac users will be interested in this or wait for a normal combined Imac?

Yes! No iMacs and no Notebooks tomorrow only the Mac mini and it’s larger new brother. ?

I have an iMac 27” from 2017 and was waiting for the new iMac “large”. But if Apple releases that studio thing with a decent display and capable internal I’ll be more than tempted to get this.
Especially with the prospect of waiting another year for the iMac I really want.

Also in my special case it might even make more sense to get a Mac with an external display because than I can use it also with my work Mac. With an iMac I wouldn't be able to do that.

In short:
If Apple releases a Max Studio with a SoC thats at least as capable as the M1 Max with 64 Gb Ram and 1 or 2 TB SSD and an external display thats at least as capable as the iMac 5K display I will get the Mac Studio and Studio Display.

This recent tweet from Gurman is interesting. Seems to imply don't expect too many new Macs tomorrow.

At this point the only Mac I feel confident about tomorrow is the Mac Studio. And that display of course too.

I doubt a $2500 iMac would qualify as a "Pro" machine. The discontinued iMac Pro cost twice that. Maybe an iMac Pro Light.
The idea some of us had at the time was that the iMac would essentially adopt the Pro name but it wouldn’t necessary be as powerful as the original iMac Pro. It would essentially be a rebrand much as the iPhone and iPad and MacBook has a Pro line that more or less just means best specs. This new iMac Pro would just be the new 27” model. But now with news that it isn’t coming in 2022 I don’t think that is the case.

The rumour-mill is what it is, but sheesh, this is chaos.

Hopefully we'll get a few fresh and cohesive words from Apple on their transition tomorrow. Like, are they still on track with their 2 year time frame for the rest of the lineup? In the absents of a 27" iMac / iMac Pro, the Mac Studio and display, which I assume is a preview only, kinda looks like a substitute, stop-gap measure for an unplanned hole.

Yes, it no longer seems to mean professional. A 5K screen on an iMac probably merits an M1 Pro as the minimum chip. Pro name for the chip, pro name for the machine. But the Mac Studio might change that.

eh how do you mean?
There are several bits you could be questioning, so I will answer each in turn.

Originally there was the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, both designed to be used in a professional environment. For example, they had the power to do professional video editing well when most consumer machines struggled. But now there is the iPhone Pro, which is not particularly aimed at work use.

The 5K iMac screen has a lot of pixels to drive, so the M1 is probably not the right chip for it, hence using the M1 Pro.

The M1 Pro has so far only appeared in a machine named Pro. A Pro chip in a Pro machine makes sense. So an M1 Pro powered iMac might naturally be called the iMac Pro.

The Mac Studio is not called Pro, but may well include an M1 Pro, breaking this sequence. However, Studio is a new naming convention, so maybe we will see something new with it.

So M1 Ultra is going to need a serious cooling system - I wonder if we will see something similar to what the Intel iMac Pro had (just scaled down).

Also, really starting to think iMac Pro will be the only 27" iMac and it's going to be expensive...
