I know I’ve said in the past that the iMac is such a small part of their business that it’s not worth spending resources to update it.

However, I wonder if there’s a reverse halo effect. Where frustrated long time Mac users leave the platform for more value based Windows computing options. Once that happens, why stay in the ecosystem altogether?
The benefits of an iPhone, or Apple Watch are greatly lessened.

The chances and numbers of people doing this is probably minimal (although some popular Mac podcasters have said they’ve done so).

If there is an actual redesign, WWDC will be the likely spot to see it debut.
I would be doubtful of anything ahead of that.

Also leaks for potential future hardware would be found in whatever the next macOS is that debuts at WWDC if the hardware isn't announced along side the software.

WWDC would be the big one this year I believe just with the supposed links to Ryzen CPU's. This could open the door to widerspread adoption of Ryzen, strong word being could.

If someone NEEDS a machine, you buy now.
If someone WANTS a machine, then you wait indefinitely or until the want becomes a NEED.
Buying a want, many times, leads to uncertainty if they should have bought it or not, or the product not actually fulfilling a purpose. Because it's a want.

So if money is burning a hole in your pocket, buy a savings account and a pack of gum.

I know I’ve said in the past that the iMac is such a small part of their business that it’s not worth spending resources to update it.

This is the most accurate guess I made how many iMacs are still sold based on existing numbers in the past: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/will-a-redesigned-imac-arrive-in-2020.2184301/post-27472139

Also, although anecdotal, I see iMacs everywhere, entrepreneurs use them a lot, and most small businesses I visit also use iMacs.

And even then, the Mac Pro sales are way smaller, and they spend resources on that (even if it's only once every 6 years).

If someone NEEDS a machine, you buy now.
If someone WANTS a machine, then you wait indefinitely or until the want becomes a NEED.

It's not so black and white. Almost nobody ever NEEDS a new machine, unless it's broken or stolen. In my case, I want one because it could speed up my workflow and I could play newer games and at higher settings. At some point buying a new machine is just a smart business decision. But when is exactly the right time? It's really just a gut feeling. And when that gut feeling gets strong when a new iMac has been released a year ago, I just wait until a new one is released.

It would be cool if they redesigned the iMac but i doubt it, there have been no rumours from Ming-Chi Kuo or Mark Gurman about a redesign. I would love them to remove the side bezels, add Face ID and a complete redesign.

Well, you'd THINK the iMac Pro would be updated FIRST to all the new stuff, and it will trickle down to the iMac.

Really really really want a new iMac with a redesign. I still have my 2012, and I am not upgrading until they do so. I will consider the iMac Pro if the specs get updated however. The cooling system is a must.

For the iMac it's hard to see a redesign in this year, maybe late 2020 but there are no new CPU from intel, and the nw Intel Comet Lake are aspected to be released on April/may, so the new iMac will arrive later this year or in 2021.

For the iMac Pro instead, an update at the -rumored- event on 31 march can be possibile, and the design will be used on the new iMac of course

Well CPU-wise, Intel is not scheduled to release Comet Lake for the desktop until March or April though R&D chips are in the wild.

I'm thinking Apple might be limited to using 65W models in the current iMac chassis as the unlocked K-series i9 Comet Lakes are rumored to run two or even three times their rated TDP under full load so the 125W i7 and 95W i5 K series might be too much for the current thermals. Intel will offer 65W models of the i9, i7 and i5 so Apple will be able to offer 10/8/6 core models.

On the plus side, the 65W models will probably be the first Comet Lake models to ship, so that could support a broad WWDC refresh of the iMac and MacBook Pro lines (new rumors today say the 13" MBP will have Ice Lake).

who said anything about Intel chips? :)
every year it's the same story.
given the current imac (non-pro) thermal design that struggle to cool down (and sound like a jet engine, while at it) even current CPU/GPU combos (i9+Vega48 being top), i doubt any new iteration will help in that regard.

i'm talking about a redesign of the imac.
add to 2020 imac the thermals out of the imac pro and the T2 chip while at it....what'll justify the difference (in price) between them? it has to be something else.

and this lack of something else, i find disturbing :D

Own a 2019 jet engine, I mean i9 iMac... only two features will get me to move to a new iMac

1) Much improved thermals, the one I own is too loud too often in games

2) Larger than 27" screen

i'm talking about a redesign of the imac.

Pretty sure that is not going to happen, unless they announce the design at WWDC and do not start production until End of Year (like the iMac Pro and Mac Pro).

Count me skeptical of such a plan, because at that point it will stop sales of the existing iMac (as why would you not wait?).

The other option is Apple announces nothing at WWDC and then drops a new design at End of Year to protect existing iMac sales, but in the interim people will bitch Apple is not updating the iMac and then when they do, they will bitch about the Mid-2019 iMacs they did buy after WWDC. :p

I know that rumours nowadays are almost exclusively about idevices and much fewer about macs, mainly - I think? - because it is easier to spot parts in the many actors involved in the supply chain and with the due leak of information from the partners designing accessories.

I am just pissed off that the few we hear about macs are just about the notebooks. Shall we pool some money and hire a PI to look into imacs? :D

iPhones get all the attention because that is the most important product in Apple's portfolio - most important to Apple as a company, most important to Apple's investors and most important to Apple's customers.

My guess is it will slot in where the 12" MacBook did. I think a modern Apple ARM CPU can run x86 software in emulation at least as fast as the 7W Kaby Lake CPUs the final mid-2017 models had and probably faster.

That makes sense, the 7w Amber Lake Y CPUs are 4 core, 8 thread 1GHz which only uses LPDDR3 1600 RAM which is below the spec set by Ice Lake U.

Although the A14 may be planned for the 5nm architecture the existing A13 seems very competitive already.

The A13 is 6 core, including 2 high performance cores, uses LPDDR4X, an X variant would have very usable graphics power to drive a 12" retina screen (2304x1440 vs 2732x2048 for the 12.9" iPad Pro). The energy efficient cores could allow Apple to reduce the size of the battery to accommodate a scissor keyboard.

And Gatekeeper can force users to use the App Store rather than allowing downloading from third party websites.

To do this, we'd be looking at renaming the 12" Macbook to 12" iBook - for example - where it becomes a new product - perhaps even running iBookOS.
