RAM is important everyday performance but for iOS updates on the iPad, the determining factor seems to be the SoC generation.

iOS 9 - dropped support for A4
iOS 10 - dropped support for A5
iOS 11 - dropped support for A6

The iPad 3 had 1 GB of RAM, but it's stuck with iOS 9. Other 1 GB RAM devices like iPhone 5, 5S, and 6 are running iOS 10.

Not in my opinion. Relatively speaking, I though the iPad 4 was one of the BEST. Insane battery life (13-14+ hours) and performance.

Others don't agree with me, but I look primarily at RAM as an indicator as to when to buy. I buy at the BEGINNING of an upgraded RAM phase. That allowed me to skip on the iPad 3, iPad Air 1, and iPad Pro 9.7. I own every generation iPad except those and they are still in daily use.

That is what I use to help me to determine WHAT to buy.

As for WHEN...

After the first gen iPad (which I had on preorder on day of announcement), I have a rule to wait 3-5 months after the availability of a new generation iPad. This allows those units manufactured during the run-up to release to be sold and cleared out of the retail channels. That first batch has a higher than average probability of manufacturing issues. During that first batch, issues are identified (most common are recalibrating of equipment) and resolved. Units from later batches, generally speaking have higher build quality.

This is why it is important, IMO, to determine how much RAM is in the 10.5 iPP. If it is 2GB, then according to my guidelines, it is a no-go. I would wait until the 10.5 iPP shipped with 4GB. If it is 3GB, then considering screen resolution in comparison to the 12.9 Pro, that would be a "solid buy". Relatively speaking, it'll have the same RAM "headroom" as the 12.9 Pro and the same longevity. If the 10.5 has 4GB, then it would be a "must buy" as it would have a GREATER headroom than the 12.9 Pro.

Others are free to use them or disagree.... but it has worked personally for me and I'm stickin' with "what works". :)

Oh, to answer the question: No there will be no new iPads in October. There is a longshot possibility of an update Mini (with the Mini 4 dropping in price in time for the holiday season)

Good advice. Thanks.

so.... even if ram is updated in 10.5, you would wait 3-5 months?

For those who love iOS 11 and wanting to buy an iPad, but not being so impressed with the Pencil and think 'yeah that 2017 iPad looks good!'..

How can we be sure they don't pull an iPad 3 on us and supersede it quickly in October with a newer shinier model and give the current iPad 2017 a short support lifecycle and lacklustre performance early such as in iOS 12..

Wouldn't mind buying one myself with accessories for the price of the Pro.

Anyone else wondering the same? What reassurance do we have
Why would they do another update in 3 months? That makes no sense. iPad 3 was a different issue, the update this past Monday was a good one, and they just gave us a budget iPad in April. unless all these new iPads end up with some crazy weird major manufacturing problem, there will not be another update. The only maybe possible update to iPads would be a Mini 5 (but I am pretty sure Apple is done with iPad Mini at this point.)

That's what I want to hear. That they won't release another this year.

But in March 2012: iPad 3rd generation.
October 2012: iPad 4th generation.

Reflected upon as the worst two iPads made :-(
that's also a 7-month period between releases and was because the iPad 3 had some problems where an update was needed, what your asking for is 3 months for products that have yet to even be released. Apple isn't that crazy.

I'm hoping you're wrong. Would love to have an iPad mini with A9. Granted, I agree that the chances are pretty slim. :(

Guys, I do feel stupid for thinking so. But some of your replies have explained it perfectly. I know they wont do one sooner now, and that the iPad 3 was a special case.

Right now, I'm debating.. do I keep this perfectly fast iPad Air 2 4G or buy the budget iPad..... whenever this does need replaced I'd imagine it will be the new budget iPad be it this model or the next!

I wouldn't bother going from an Air 2 to the budget 9.7" iPad. Sure you'd be getting a nice single-core improvement on the CPU side as well as a tiny bump in GPU but the screen is worse than the Air 2 and it's thicker.

GPU bump is iffy. The iPad 5 is using the A9 which is mostly designed for lower iPhone resolution. I think A8X is probably within spitting distance of the A9 in terms of GPU.

They are very close but I think the A9 has a tiny edge but wouldn't base a buying decision on that tiny performance gap.

Serenity Caldwell already confirmed 4gb in both. I'm so excited for a 12.9inch now, the new procceor is insane and I don't see the next iPhone surpassing its performance tbh. I don't think its power envelope would allow it to so that is conforting that this iPad Pro will essentially be the top dog for the coming year.

Okay, iPad Air 2 stays for now.

The only pressing upgrade I could do with is going from 16GB to 128GB but for now I think iCloud Drive is helping me cope!

Why would the new iPhone need to pass the iPad in performance?

Only once did Apple release new iPads 6 months later, that was because the iPad 3 was a mess

Plus, Apple just doubled the RAM on 10.5", you're not going to see a RAM increase so soon now, they inexcusable kept 2GB in the iPad Pro 9.7"

I think this has been the trend in the past.

But now that the Pro has been renewed and the iPad is taking a lead as peoples main devices more strongly than ever before the iPad Pro may now be the first to get more power.

Apple will probably say "The same extraordinary chip from iPad Pro" rather than vice versa.

The Reason I asked that member, is in a sense they both share iOS and similar architecture, but both devices primarily serve different purposes. And it really depends on how one utilizes the power for the iPhone and iPad. Altogether, I don't think the iPhone needs to supersede the iPad in terms of power or vice versa. But they do compliment each other nicely.

I have 100% confidence in recommending the recently released iPads. I don't see Apple doing anything major for 12 to 18 months.

My only advice is don't pay full price. At least get a $25 gift card.

Waiting for the back to school offers. Perhaps a good 30 days after WWDC?

Usually my BB back-to-school deals occur in July (sometimes late June,) but not always with iPads, last year it started with just Macs and other laptops, later some iPad deals came out but they were more moderate sales, rather than coupons or super deals. But you never know, BB Corporate never tells me what is happening. ha ha.

No iPad updates in October.

The iPad (2017) is intended as a low-cost, gateway product into the iPad Pro.

It's an inexpensive model to attract the ever increasing number of phablet owners. If Apple updates the iPad with A10 or more RAM, it will increase the risk of cannibalization. Right now, there's a clear feature and performance distinction between iPad and iPad Pro.

No it won't. If they came out with a new Ipad with the same specs but only the A10 it won't cannibalize a whole lot IMHO. The A10 is only a slight upgrade from the A9x or whatever is inside it now

Non-Pro will likely remain at 9.7".

  1. Apple sells about 10 million iPads each quarter.
  2. Gartner ranks Apple, P&G, and Amazon.com as the top 3 in the world in terms of supply chain.
  3. Apple doesn't have a few million iPad displays waiting to be cleared out.
  4. Apple hires procurement and supply chain management staff to ensure #1-3 happen on a regular basis.

They obviously have a few million screens laying around. Before the 2017 iPad came out the lineup was Mini 4, Air 2, and the pro 12 and 9.7. Thus new Ipad is similar to the Air 1 with the non laminated screen but with Air 2 specs

I could see Apple dropping an iPad mini Pro in October. Despite what some are saying about the iPhone plus impacting iPad mini sales, I don't really buy that. The mini is such a better web surfing/movie watching/video editing/sketching iPad experience than the iPhone plus. And it's so much more portable and travel friendly than the 10.5" or 12.9" iPad Pros.

This may be my opinion, but I also know many other artists, businesses, pilots & others that prefer the mini size iPad for many of the same reasons.

Not saying that Apple is going to release an iPad mini Pro. But if they do release any iPad this fall, that makes the most sense. I hope it happens...but...I'm not gonna hold my breath tho.
