Well I agree the camera is going to change things. But I don't think people truly understand how they will use the camera in the iPad. It is NOT the same thing as the camera in a point and shoot or a phone. Are you really going to hold up your iPad (front first) to a scene to take photos? It is more of a (self) portrait camera. In that respect, in the "party" setting, it is a totally different experience that no-one has yet had. But I don't understand the wrist slashing that is going on about not having a camera, since the iPad "camera" experience is going to be so different from anything anyone has ever had and thus it is not possible to lament its exclusion except in a kind of wistful way.
I think most people wanted the camera for video chat rather than as a picture taker.
This is a mobile device for people on the move so you could chat with family when travelling on business, move the iPad around the family gathering to speak to people who can't make it etc. It might also work as a simple business video conferencing system.
If you wonder why there should be a camera on the iPad then surely you should question why there is one on the iMac, Macbooks and Macbook Pros...
I will get one fairly early on. As pricing for 3G has not been released yet for Oz I am not sure whether it will be wifi or 3G.
The locations I can see me using this outside of the house are:
- Airports - everywhere I travel I get free wifi in the lounges generally
- Hotels - In Oz mostly no free wifi so that is an issue
- Train - no wifi but mostly I will be watching TV or clearing emails on my work laptop
- Car whilst travelling somewhere - we use the iPhone to get directions (so no loss there) or clarify addresses and as the little feller is only 1 (almost) he wont be surfing the net for a while
So the question becomes do I really need the net that much on the train given we dont have the equivalent of an NY Times App for an Australian newspaper...
