I know the iPad has received a lot of criticism from people who either hate it, doesn't fit their needs, or both. However, I am very anxious for the iPad to arrive. It will be replacing my macbook. (I'll be purchasing an iMac soon) My credit card is waiting...

I gave my fair share of criticism towards the iPad when it was introduced but I still want one. No multitasking was the only big gripe I had against it but I put 2 and 2 together and realized it will be jailbroken instantly and I can install proswitcher. These "iPad will fail" and "iPad sucks" comments might look foolish in 5 years if the iPad is successful. I still get a chuckle reading the thread on here when the iPod was introduced. Developers will make the iPad truly amazing.

I think I've made up my mind that I'm gonna scoop up the $499 model. but not preordering or whatever...waiting for them to hit the stores - I'm gonna go down to one of the Milwaukee Apple Stores and try one out for myself anyway.

Not new. Maybe a few years down the road when they start coming up used for $150 or less I'll pick one up. I've got too many laptops to justify buying one of those things.

got a link handy for that? I've only been part of the Mac family since August and I've been enjoying reading archived threads and watching the Apple keynotes that I missed.

I'm most definitely getting one as soon as it is available.
I have recently discovered an app called Tab Toolkit, even in X2 mode this will be a reason alone for me to buy an iPad, I'm fed up with having to sit in front of my iMac with Guitar Pro running, with little room to move and bashing my guitar every five seconds.
I will buy/make myself a music stand type of device to hold the iPad, or use it with a table & stand that is more practical than my desk, making learning guitar that much more pleasurable.
The fact it can be used in other situations (surfing in bed while the missus watches crap tv, video out to my bedroom TV using AirVideo, used as a digitial photo frame, something to occupy my little girl in the car on long journeys....the list goes on, more than justifies my motives for purchasing.
Oh and it will be the 64GB WiFi & 3G (if I can hold out that long, wish the WiFi only had GPS since I intend to tether)

Neil.

Yes.

Probably more than one (don't want my wife and kids getting their fingerprints all over mine).

Of course I'll buy it! It was created by Jesus!

Nope. My 2nd generation iPad Nano works just fine.

I'll probably be putting the cash towards a mac mini, so my docked macbook can switch roles from desktop to laptop again. :D

i quiet like the ipad , but how usable will it be?
will it go up in smoke if you open youtube (best example for flash)
or will the graphic card and processor handle it
would i be able to connect it to a external monitor and use it as a big touchpad keyboard
instead of a mouse
as i quiet like the idea of the
optimus tactus keyboard
optimus-tactus_468.jpg

but including a computer inside but portable when not used with a big screen
no i dont want a expensive macbook , just something for basic computing that does not break down as soon as you open a website or goes up in smoke if you watch a divx film

Hahaha. Many problems with this statement.

iPad will NOT be able to play Flash.
iPad will NOT be able to play DivX.

iPad will NOT go up in smoke. It works the same as the iPhone. In fact its more powerful than my 3GS, and way more powerful than the iPhone OG and the iPhone 3G. So, will it go up in smoke, no.

Personally...

I'll be selling my newly purchased Macbook Air. I bought it so I could have something portable and easy to check email/facebook on. The iPad solves this problem for me---and at a way cheaper price point!

Well its from a survey of 753 people. It did not breakdown from pc users and mac users. Plus, it's from a first impression.

Where do you get the 753 people from? It sounds like they just took a survey from their customers, why do they need to differentiate between Mac and PC users?

About Retrevo Pulse Report
Data for this report came from a study of more than 1000 randomly selected Retrevo users. A first random sample of users were surveyed between Jan 16-20, 2010 before the Apple Tablet was announced. A second random sample of users were surveyed between Jan 27 – Feb 3, 2010, after the announcement. The sample was distributed across gender, age, income and location in the United States. Most questions had a confidence interval of 4% at a 95% confidence level.

I think this poll is better.

Why, because you prefer the results?

iPad: first impressions

My impressions of the iPad so far:

- It's a big-ass iPod touch / iPhone (depending on whether you get 3G or not) Either way, it is designed to profit from the existing selection of apps available on the iTunes Store. Why should Apple make it run OS X when they can just as easily make it run a locked-in platform where they reap 50% of the app profits?

- Could make for a nice e-book reader, but whether or not it is a practical Kindle rival depends largely on whether the e-books offered through the iTunes Store will be infested will DRM restrictions. [I bet they will be]

- The exclusion of a user-facing camera seems very deliberate to me. Almost as if Apple is saying "buy it now; it's new and revolutionary and magical - and when we add a camera next year you can buy it all over again"... seems like a ballsy move that may hurt more than help them in getting this new platform off the ground.

- Since we now know that it won't run OS X, the ModBook is the official Apple tablet solution for those of us who are still dedicated Mac users. If you still don't know what the ModBook is, check it out here:

This will especially be of interest to graphic designers and animators.

50%? I don't think that's correct. Personally, I think that within 12 months you will find that the majority of iPad owners will only consider purchasing iPad specific apps. They might download free iPhone apps, but not paid ones. Not that I think that will be a major restriction. Most useful apps will come in both iPhone and iPad variants.

Why? I don't understand how being a "practical Kindle rival" is contingent on whether iTunes store e-books have DRM?! Even if they have DRM, how is that a restriction that a) most people will even realise and b) restrict any activity that they will be performing on the iPad? Sorry but I don't see the relationship. Kindle has DRM, so iPad also having it certainly does not rule it out as a rival. Anyway, I don't see how that matters unless you are going to try to, say copy the files to your linux desktop and try to read them there. In that case, I suppose you might have a point. But that's hardly something that the average user is going to try.

Well I agree the camera is going to change things. But I don't think people truly understand how they will use the camera in the iPad. It is NOT the same thing as the camera in a point and shoot or a phone. Are you really going to hold up your iPad (front first) to a scene to take photos? It is more of a (self) portrait camera. In that respect, in the "party" setting, it is a totally different experience that no-one has yet had. But I don't understand the wrist slashing that is going on about not having a camera, since the iPad "camera" experience is going to be so different from anything anyone has ever had and thus it is not possible to lament its exclusion except in a kind of wistful way.

I tried to reply on the retrevo page but it flagged me as spam

Anyway, that survey is statically weak. The first set of questions changes between the before and after, completely invalidating the results. Nevertheless, one of the categories that remains the same across both indicates a tripling of people who will definitely buy an iPad!

In the second survey, the number of "No" (won't buy iPad) "buyers" only went up an unconvincing 10%. Just think about that. Given the amazing amount of hype and the general view that new Apple products are likely to be revolutionary, the fact that only 10% more people give a resounding NO after realising that the device is actually quite limited and does not in fact cure world famine or cancer, is extremely encouraging for Apple.

Further, in the second survey, the number of (probable) "yes" votes goes UP from 18% to 24%. That's almost a quarter of this population that is likely to buy an iPad. Again, just think of that for a minute. HP or Sony would die for a penetration like that. Not only that, but this product isn't even available yet. Not only that, but this product is quite limited and not a general purpose computer like a netbook or notepad.

In summary, statistically the data is not convincing either way, but we can certainly rule out the conclusion that the iPad has definitely "failed to convince buyers" as the breathless title suggests. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
