Yep... I can work with this, I just needed a display of this size and decent e-mail facilities in a small package. The battery life @10hrs use is going to be highly optimistic, but even 5 or 6hrs is fine.

I'm not the intended market, nor are 80% of people who inhabit this site. I suspect the main market, and it's a huge market, are the over 45's who have just missed the computer era.

I know loads of people who have not taken the plunge due to being intimidated by all current operating systems, which are bogged down with facilities that many of an older generation simply do not want. The iPad will suit them down to the ground, a fun machine, not a work machine.

If everyone waits for the Rev B version, then there will never be a Rev B version and they never sold any Rev A's. Just thought!

The only problem is they still need a computer to sync the iPad.

This iPad lacks a lot. The fact that I can't use something as simple as SD cards (without having to carry an additional dongle) just seems silly to me. I like the idea just not the implementation.

Won't be buying one of these. Hopefully we'll see similar devices to the Lenovo U1 from other manufacturers.

Absolutely. Can't wait until pre-ordering begins. I'll probably get the 32GB w/o 3G.

Not necessarily. The iPad compliments a computer, but doesn't require one. The only real requirement is a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. For older people who don't have a ton of media that's one really a problem.

I'd like to see them in action before I pony up the cash but I could definitely see it working for me. If I were to purchase, I'd probably go for the 32GB with 3G.

Where have you read that it will work without a computer?

You can't use a iPod touch or iPhone without setting it up on your computer first. Also, OS updates can only be installed by syncing with iTunes.

I would love to justify buying one, but so far I can't..help guys..I love throwing money at apple.. :apple:

I'll buy one.

I've been looking into an e-book reader and I love surfing the web and such with my iPhone, so I think this will be a good fit.

I like that it will work with most iPhone apps. I've bought quite a few over the years.

The only complaint I had was the lack of an onboard SD card slot (I know about the adapter, I just think that with all that room along the side, they could slip in a flush mounted card slot reader).

Ive seen you post that list on YouTube videos. You really have a grudge against this machine. Personally I think it fills the niche perfectly. Id love to have it, but my current needs label it as a "luxury product".

If I ever got one it would be the lower end wifi version.

I really don't. I've been using Macs for over 25 years and I love their stuff. I just don't see what the big deal about the iPad. But I do think it's beautiful to be honest. As for my post on YOUTUBE, yeah, I want to know if anybody else out there feels the same.

I like the concept of the iPad, but I wasn't expecting, or even wanting a tablet computer, I wanted a media device that was better than my iPod
Touch. The iPad addresses all the stumbling blocks that keep me from optimally using my iPod Touch as a media device (mainly screen size), plus it allows me to do real work with iWork as well as interface with XGA projectors.

Anyway, it's not about the device itself, it's about the content. This opens a new horizon for convenient media access, and likely a whole new subscription paradigm. I have no interest in reading the New York Times or Sports Illustrated, print or online, but there are a lot of people who do, and they'll pay. Me, I wanted primarily a book reader and a casual net surfer with a bigger screen and more functional keyboard. Those are more-than-adequate tradeoffs for me relative to portability.

My only regrets are lack of front camera for video conferencing and the fact that it can't use CDMA data services (Verizon). My only decision relative to buying the thing is whether to buy it with or without data plan. Had they provided a Verizon option, it wouldn't have been a question. Now I have to evaluate whether the ATT option is worth the $130 to me. The "no-commitment" policy makes it easier for me, and I'll probably go for it.

Yup, more than likely!

When I saw it initially last night I thought it was very cool but not something I would have any use for....but the more I thought about it, it basically does 95% of the stuff I use my MacBook for but much much slicker. And ditto with my iPhone, but bigger. So for me, I'm lucky enough that I would be able to let it compliment my MacBook and iPhone and would be used for general use day to day.

I'd also probably only go for the 16 GB (or gB...i can never remember which...) as I would still keep the MacBook (with an external HDD) for properly storing data, have my iPhone for mobile music etc. I make use of Dropbox as well which would work well for viewing files, and I can imagine the app may be adapted to make use of the iPads file structure (which I think devs are allowed to access?) to allow saving to/uploading from the iPad to Dropbox. Not sure as to whether I would choose the 3G version or not...we'll see how the pricing goes...

But I'll see how it pans out really when they start shipping!

Yup - probably 4 of them.

Both my kids want one (they currently have iPod Touches, but want something a bit bigger that they can also do homework assignments on - iWork apps solves that), my wife will be getting one (she mostly needs email/web/calendar/contacts, maybe a recipe app or two, so it's perfect for her), and I'll get a souped-up one because I can see myself using it around the house (or travelling) as my default 'consumption device', and I can imagine a ton of great apps coming out for it that will make it even more useful.

Sure - when they add a camera, introduce some form of multitasking, and revamp the springboard/UI (presumably with 4.0), I'll upgrade without hesitating - but it's certainly a cool device for version 1, and I can see it filling a huge niche in my house.

I really thought I was going to, but I have decided to pass this round. I think Apple has the concept right and I bet every household and briefcase in the world has something like this in 5-10 years but 3 critical missing features, to me at least, kill the first version.

1. Lack of multitasking. Considering even the small iPhone is behind the times in its lack of multitasking, it is stunning that in a device as large and powerful as the iPad that it too lacks such a critical feature. Being unable to stream Pandora while browsing, or keep a chat client running in the background while checking email etc. is a limitation that for me is inexcusable in what is supposed to become my primary browsing device. I bet this arrives in OS 4.0, perhaps even this year... but my money doesn't go down for this device until it does.

2. Lack of flash. Until Apple adds Adobe Flash support or until enough time passes that HTML5 becomes the predominant web standard the iPad will find 10% of all webpages with broken elements. For Steve Jobs to go to The New York Times website as his first example on the iPad and find 20% of the page highlighted by a broken plugin icon only highlighted the weakness. Steve said the iPad was better at browsing than the iPhone OR a laptop but today, with no flash, that clearly isn't true.

3. Lack of a webcam. A large device like the iPad likely isn't ideal for taking pictures from the back, but a webcam would be perfect. As a pilot who travels 3-4 days a week I bring a laptop to do video iChat with my kids and to leave it out of a mobile device like this, something that is supposed to expand upon the feature set of the iPhone, seems bizarre.

The idea of a tablet device to access the internet and your media life is brilliant, in particular the use of the iPhone OS because it hides the complexity of a modern computer so very well and just gets out of the way. But as an iPhone user and a laptop owner Steve had to show why this middle device had its place and sadly it lacks a few critical features that would have done just that.

It is actually what I've been looking for. While all my needs are catered for with my iMac and iPhone, There have been many times when I've just wanted something with a bigger display. Possibly with the ability of writing documents. I have a disability and find it hard to lift things, so had been seriously considering buying a MBA. However for me this is perfect. I just have to decide between the 3G or no 3G version.
I can really see why someone would buy this, but I'm not quite sure why anyone would buy the iPod Touch any more.

Because the portability of the iPod touch appears to be much more than the iPad I'd guess.

Seems like many are buying more than one. Anyone want to add a third for me? You would be helping Apple. :D

I will wait to see it first hand, AND wait to see what apps come out for it. To me, I think the key thing will be what apps come out specifically for it, and if/how they exploit the additional screen size. I can see me using this for a lot, IF the right apps come out for it. I use my iPhone now for a lot of browsing and email (when my Blackberry can't handle the html formatting correctly) on the go, but get frustrated by the small screen size frequently. I can see browsing and email being a joy to do on a touchscreen device of this size, especially in bed late at night/early in the morning. But if innovative apps don't come out for this that take advantage of the screen size, I can't see me spending $500+ on a bedside reader. I'll just continue to use my iPhone converted into an iPod Touch for that. The apps will be the seller for me. If they can do what I need them to do in innovative and easier ways than current laptop apps, I'll get one to throw in my briefcase. But if the apps just end up being larger scale versions of iPhone apps, there's no point in me getting one. I already have an iPhone, and if i have to carry another device in my bag, it'll be my Macbook Air which is far more powerful than this device.
